A satellite image of China's new nuclear ballistic missile submarine is available on the Google Earth Internet site. Hans M. Kristensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), spotted the images, photographed by the commercial Quickbird satellite in late 2006. One photo is of what is apparently the new Type 094 Jin-class SSBN at the Xiaopingdao base near Dalian, FAS reported. The Jin-class is about 35 feet longer than the Xia-class SSBN, "primarily due to an extended mid-section of approximately 115 feet (35 meters) that houses the missile launch tubes and part of the reactor compartment," according to the report. The extended section is to make room for the larger Julang-2 ballistic missile and may also be due to the size of the reactor. In late 2006, the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence projected China could build five Jin-class SSBNs. One of the big problems the Soviets had with their nuclear subs was the thermal pattern left behind giving off the cooling water. See this big triangle moving in the water, sub is up at the point. Wonder if the Chinese subs do the same thing. Which is probably why China never built very many of those (only build one Xia class) and decided to spend money in development instead. They paid a few arms and legs to Russia for technology. This new 094 sub took over 15 years to develop and build and is based on that Russian technology. China has been having a number of technical problems specifically with the reactor. So it is highly unlikely they figured out how to conceal the thermal signiture if they can't even figure out the basics of reactor design and operation. There is also a question of whether the ICBMs will even work. It seems this part of the sub's development was rushed during development so it likely has a number of critical flaws. It seems however that China is sick of waiting and they are ready to build 5 more 094s regardless of any flaws because they desperately want more political clout in the Pacific. But for now at least, their bark will be way worse than their bite. They are using 40-year old Russian technology. The same type of technology the US Pacific Fleet has been playing wargames with for the past half-century. The Chinese were never really that good when it comes to a Navy. That is their weakness.
