BDSM abbreviations in vanilla settings (Full Version)

i have to laugh everytime i see the abbreviation CBT, why?

im currently studying a Degree in Mental Health and we frequently use the term CBT. In the psychology terminology it means (as im sure most are aware) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and i always have to think before i speak regarding this term, so you can imagine the mortification when upon being asked a question in a lecture (thank god it was small one) i threw my hand up and quick as a flash said Cock Ball Torture!!!!!!!!

The silence was deafening as you would imagine, my face was scarlet in colour and rather hot to the touch as i muttered some silly excuse about not knowing where on earth i could have got that from lol

Question is, has anyone ever heard the abbreviating letters or seen them and without thinking said out loud something to do with BDSM or kink instead of what it should have meant? and what was the reaction of those that heard you?

That sounds positively mortifying!

The only one I can think of is when my friend told me she and her boyfriend were into S&M. Naturally, I think they mean SadoMasochism and pipe up with agreement, only to hear, "...No...Silence In Music. It's a local performance piece."

I am in the same field and have the same initial confusion when I see the abbreviation CBT.  I always have to take a second to figure out if I am at the office or not.  I have been known to gasp in shock when someone has referred a client to me for this. [:D]

Never had that happen, but being in a similar field I had some general confusion when I first started learning about BDSM...Then I came to feel cool about knowing about something my colleagues didn't! LOL....

But honestly, I got a little chuckle from reading your experience!

At my job the intitials stand for 'Computer Based Training.' Fortunately, however, I have never humilated myself at a business meeting by shouting out the alternative abbreviation. Well done! <g>

LOL I can imagine the reactions!  I have never had this happen but a friend of mine who is submissive and has a vanilla wife ( who knows and supports him) told her he was making CBT sandwiches and later explained he meant Cheese, bacon and tomato.

Reminds me a bit of that old Steve Martin routine, where he's approached by a couple backstage, and they ask him if he's "bi." "Well," thinks Martin, "I studied a little bit of spanish in High School, but I don't know if I could really be called "bi."... The couple invites him to an S&M party after the show... "Oh, cool! Spainiards and Mexicans!" Finally, II get to speak my second language!

Shit happens. Don't worry about it. I think all of us have occasionally "outed" ourselves in an embarassing way. The trick is to just be proud of who you are, and what you desire.

Last time it happened to me was when I was at a Denny's. I was with a group of friends, all of whom were rather sexually enlightened, and we got into a conversation about preference of sex toys. It wasn't until a few minutes later that we realized the rest of the bistro had gone silent, and were listening to us, rather like one of those old investment firm ads. (Maybe they were all looking for infor on the best vibe to buy.)
The odd thing was, I was later approached by a woman out in the parking lot, wondering how to get into our group. Shock is one thing, but when people sense that maybe you know things they don't, curiosity takes hold.

For me it was when I had my first CBT for my job- computer based training.  Definitely took me awhile to adjust

I get CBT several times a day when I go to a contract job.

CBT in the IT world is Computer Based Training.

not dealing with abbreviations but a funny story...a group of us were sitting around in a starbucks and one person was telling this elaborate fisting story and at some point durring the story, this college aged guy came up behind the person tellin it, and stood there with his mouth hanging open until we indicated to the story teller that there was someone behind him....then we invited this college guy to join us and generally teased him, but he "had to study" and walked away shortly after...the 10 or so people at our table were rolling on the floor laughing...

edited to add...oh yea it was gay anal fisting, for the little boost on the shock factor
