Have you ever been at an event and trying to capture the eye of someone of the opposite orientation, or just trying to make a good impression and suddenly it all just goes south?

Well, true to form (hey, at least I'm consistent) I managed to go from spectacular to spectacle in 0.5 seconds this weekend. I was at a weekend party and decided at about 4 am to take a dip in the pond. The water was perfect. Upon getting out into the breeze though I found myself shivering like mad. The bonfire was bright and warm. So I backed up to it. And I backed up a little more.

Then I made this amazing attempt at a backflip into the firepit. Well, okay....it wasn't an intentional backflip and the only amazing thing was that I didn't end up burning myself to bits. I did manage to tear the heck out of my leg on the big rocks around the pit though. It would have been far more embarassing for me though had the man who caught me just in time not broken his toe on the rocks. Yeah....I'd say we were a pretty funny sight doing that funny hopping dance in the firelight.

So fess up (I can't be the only one who is so good at making an idiot of myself). Have you ever shattered the image you were trying to project in spectacular fashion?

I noticed a female friend of mine over talking with another group of folks at a campout.  When I finally caught her attention, I held my arms out to her, because she gives GREAT hugs.  What I didn't expect was the running....flying through the air....into my arms.  I caught her, held on to her for just a split second, thought I could hold it and be the macho man moment...

And then I spotted my wife (my now ex) starting to come over to say hi to the woman in my arms, at which point I lost my balance.  My friend's momentum carried us over into a mud puddle.  I landed flat on my back, with her on top of me.  When my ex approached, I was completely covered in mud with a clothed woman riding cowboy on top of me...my friends still laugh about that one.  My ex reminded me of it until the day we split up.

My friend stood up...the only mud on her, was on her boots.

once wile in high school.. a long long time ago, there was a young man,, a true jock/stoner type.
well, one day while in lunch, he saw the parrelle (sp) bars, pushed over against the wall. having just watched some olympic games the nite before,, he figured, well,im athletic,,i can do that....
hmmm, suffice to say, with many hundreds in the lunch room watching.... i basically did one complete (or incomplete) roll fowards, before falling thru the bars onto something resembling my head :(
to this day, i have a phobia of lunch rooms :(

mistoferin -> RE: Projecting a graceful image....then BLAM!!! (7/3/2007 10:14:12 AM)

LMAO....I know what you mean, I am scared to death of window wells for a similar reason.

At a BBQ I went to sit on the only available chair left. I didn't notice it was a 3 legged stool. As I sat down it promptly fell over backwards and deposited me directly into the window well of the home. I was folded in half with my feet straight over my head, my arms now pinned behind me from trying to brace my fall. I am so glad that no one there had a foot tickling fetish....I would have been so screwed.

u give the greatest visuals my dear :)

mistoferin -> RE: Projecting a graceful image....then BLAM!!! (7/3/2007 10:19:07 AM)

The really bad part is that usually everyone around me is laughing far too hard to be of any real help.

Not at a lifestyle event but at an SCA event years ago, heck yes.  I was in my best chemise and bodice, four layers of skirts from the waist down, head veil, circlet, pearls.... with my youngest UM who has pronounced ADHD and was 3 years old at the time. He was fond of disappearing in the blink of an eye or taking off at a dead run, which of course he did on this occasion as well.  This resulted in me pulling up all those skirts to reveal one rather well worn pair of non-military issue combat boots as I ran after him.  So much for the image of the noble lady.  [sm=goodnight.gif]

Oh but you are sooooo not alone in that one. I'm often amused at Ren Faires when I see folks who are in perfect period costumes.....right up until you get a glimpse of their Nike Airs.

Can't remember anything like this happening to me. I think I'd have to be a bit more social and outgoing, first. Closest I can think of off the top of my head is being young.. I was an altar boy in a Catholic church. The incense I had to use was.. well, something I now believe myself to be slightly allergic to. Poor funeral mourners with the coughing and sneezing altar boy. It was utterly miserable, trying one's hardest to keep in such congestion for as long as possible as to not disturb a solemn occasion.

Im in the SCA also.....and over the years my garb has gotten more and more period...even got married at an event and had perfectly period everything, even down to the shoes on my husband. My shoes? What did I wear? See, I ran out of time, so since my dress hung the ground, I was wearing sneakers....not a problem...no one would see them...until it started raining, and I had to run with my skirts hiked up. $100's of dollars on linen and wool fabric, woolen hose and leather turnshoes...and the sneakers...sigh.

Hey, Nike's are period!! The chirugeons said so (due to ankle injuries).  And a raid of the Chief of the Authenticity Police's tent at Pennsic War one year turned up 3 rolls of duct tape and a bic lighter, so those have been declared 'period' too by default.  Of course it only matters if one gives a plague rat about what the Authenticity Police say in the first place.  [sm=tongue.gif]

I happen to be one of those who firmly believes that the value of any re-enactment is to bring history to life and show how it does relate to the present, not in seeing who is the most 'authentic'.  If I have to become so authentic that is ceases to be fun, I'm done.
