Level -> Muslim AND Christian (7/1/2007 1:47:11 PM)

by Janet I. Tu - Seattle Times

Shortly after noon on Fridays, the Rev. Ann Holmes Redding ties on a black headscarf, preparing to pray with her Muslim group on First Hill.

On Sunday mornings, Redding puts on the white collar of an Episcopal priest.

She does both, she says, because she's Christian and Muslim.

"I'll take religions for $200 Alex."
"Muslims and Christians."
"What two religions should be outlawed?"
"Correct! On to the bonus round!"

You can call yourself God if you like.  Doesn't make it true.

Self, uhhhh  Huh?

There are individuals who are known as Christian-Muslim. They were either Muslim who converted to Christianity and yet still practice Islamic law. Just like there Christian-Jews who still practice Jewish law. I find that those who do both are probably much more secure. They at least have a belief and a law to practice it in.

         Set aside the Divinity of Jesus issue (if only for the sake of argument) and you are still left with trying to reconcile the Christian notion of Free Will vs. the Islamic demand of Submission.  I don't see any common ground there.

       I think this is a woman with some serious issues.

Laugh...this was actually funny.

Free will and submission to God are not mutually exclusive, though, Rich. And from what I gathered from the article, she does not completly embrace either religion, she's making them fit, so to speak. That's bothering some from both religions.

          Seeking synthesis of what works for you is something I embrace.  I'll ID as a Zen-Luther-Wiccan (Nordic Rite), but I do it with a grin on my face.  My peculiar beliefs are my own, those are just the places where I shoplifted heavily.  Gee.  Maybe I have some serious issues too [:D]

    I'm not a member of any group though, much less in a position of ordained leadership.  To be a priest of one religion while practicing another?

       Maybe you see something I don't on the free will/submission.  It's hot.

       Funny, I flipped on the fan while sitting here staring at the screensaver and had a complete "Dumbass!" moment.  How do you reconcile Grace and Law???

       The link is a snapshot of a person in transition, still seeking their way to relate to God.  I don't think the synthesis can hold.

luckydog1 -> RE: Muslim AND Christian (7/1/2007 6:56:37 PM)

Not all Christians believe in Free will, some adhere to predestination.  Making the choice to submitt to Allah requires free will, otherwise you haven't done anything.  Basically the same goes for Free Will Christians, you can choose to follow God or not, but the choice is yours, and the fate of your soul depends on your choice.  Predestination (and Science) says that you have no choice in what you do or think, so if you follow Gods law or not is not related to you in any way.

TheHeretic -> RE: Muslim AND Christian (7/1/2007 7:49:30 PM)

      And it seems the Episcopal Church is okay with clergy that doesn't accept the divinity of Jesus.  I'll try not to say anything snide or nasty, but that is well outside my understanding of Christianity.

Marc2b -> RE: Muslim AND Christian (7/1/2007 9:29:09 PM)

If she is both a Christian and a Muslim, wouldn't that also make her a heratic and an infidel?

Does she wear half a burka?

Marc2b -> RE: Muslim AND Christian (7/1/2007 9:36:54 PM)

She better be careful or she wind up chopping off her own head - right after she excommunicates herself.

Arpig -> RE: Muslim AND Christian (7/1/2007 11:45:53 PM)

By definition one cannot be a christian and a muslim, as islam denies the divinity of christ which is central to any christian belief, thus she is a charlatan on one side or the other and I suspect both.

I'm a Christian -Muslim...No, I'm a Jew for Jesus.....No that's not it.....I like fuckin a hottie in the can....Am I Catholic?

OrangeJulius -> RE: Muslim AND Christian (7/2/2007 7:09:45 PM)

Her analogy made no sense. It sounds like she wants to convert and not lose her cushy job at the church. Apparently she never read the story of the cave.

         Has to pay off those student loans somehow.  Two different Master's Degrees in Divinity, plus a PhD in New Testament can't be cheap.
