Pandamonum -> ARG's (6/30/2007 10:41:48 PM)

Does anyone do this?  I got my gaming mag a couple of weeks ago, and it had this article on ARG's. That sounds so awsome, have no knowledge about it.  Too, it was mentioned that Nine Inch Nail's new cd, Year Zero was all about it. Did not want to research it until I bought the CD. I did today. I listened to the whole thing and then tried to track it down on line.  Which I did, but I did not have a lot of time to spend on researching it.  I'm still checking it out.  Still don't have a huge clue. Went to exhibit24.net and looked at several of the sites that were listed. This just looks like it rocks. I guess the majority of it is over and that the next cd will add on or do something new.  So, I'm trying to piece together how these things work. There were other ones listed.  Is anyone here into it, or have experience with it? I would love to hear about it. I think I want to do this.

Halo 24 rocks!  I am sure Darcy would be able to give you far more info on it than I, but he is out watching Hostel Pt2 right now.  I am really looking forward to the next CD.  Year Zero is a dystopian vision of the world in 15 years time which Trent (themanisagod) Reznor describes as an artform.

Not sure what sites you have addressed -  but here are a few to get on with.  What is it exactly that you want to know?

Ach the list goes on and on.  Echoingthesound is a great place to go visit and has links, blogs and IRC links for the whole parapin/conspiracy/presence thing.  I wouldn't consider it 'over' - Reznor said this is an ongoing Long term thing and new sites keep popping up.  There was also rumblings of a possible film.

...any chance on a quick definition of what an ARG is? Or maybe just an explanation of the acronym?

RCdc -> RE: ARG's (7/1/2007 9:56:20 AM)

An ARG = Alternative Reality Game and is an interactive story using the real world as a basis that unravels over time with the interaction of the participants.  Unlike RPGs - a ARG evolves due to a designer - called A puppet Master (or plural - Masters), rather than artifical computers etc and you don't know who is the manipulator of the experience.  It combines real life with alternative reality, rather than pretend(if you can see the difference).  Basically ARGs are realtime and don't use AIs and there aren't any 'rules'. A ARG isn't confined to one medium or area either.  Year Zero incorporates the net, music, art, grafitti, books, posters, video, etc...

Hope that helps, phil.

Thanks, this is great. Its going to take me a minute to work through these sights.  Yeah, Treznor is deified.

The yearzero ARG has been awesome so far - I became aware of it at the start of the year when somebody put two and two together and discovered that the bold letters on the back of one of the Winter tour shirts actually spelled out the name of a web address, and the fun began!

Since then, and up to the launch of the album particularly, there have been numerous sites discovered, some containing audio, some video, but mostly amazingly constructed glimpses of this terrible future that may or may not await us.

To find out everything about everything, go to the ninwiki site, here... http://www.ninwiki.com/Category:World_of_Year_Zero

You might also want to check out the Echoing The Sound forums, here.....  http://www.echoingthesound.org/phpbbx/
There's one dedicated to yearzero.

Apparently part two of YZ is due out next year, and Trent has promised that the ARG will continue, sometimes slowly, sometimes at a rapid pace until then. It has been and will continue to be one hell of a ride...... [:D]
