EgosumDominus -> Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 11:52:18 AM)

Never thought I would say this, but its time to think about buying American products. I know that we live in a global economy now but with all the tainted imports flooding into our country from China, saving a buck could cost you your health. When Chinese imports like tooth paste and children’s toys show up containing poisons and lead paint....you just have to ask your self ...what do I own from China that could be poisoning me, or killing me.
Many other items have shown up from China that are toxic. Seafood, pet food and the list goes on. My fear is that this is just the tip of the iceberg.
And what about items that come into contact with our skin. Forget the cheap restraints from China for now...they probably use Glycol in the leather and god knows what other poisons that leaches into the skin, and poison people.
Hats, shoes, cookware....

At this stage in the game it’s not possible to buy all American...but it is possible to not buy poisonous goods from China, and look to other more responsible countries for fair priced goods.

Links for those of you that may not be aware of this dangerous situation.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 12:24:23 PM)

They don't target America.  They're just crappy products.  You damage your credibility when you overstate your case.

EgosumDominus -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 12:52:14 PM)

Read the last link...Sweden has the same problem with them.
I included another country with the same issues.
But since America buys more Chinese imports than any other country, I feel that target is a good word to use in this case.
It may be a bit dramatic...but so is food poisoning.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 12:54:12 PM)

Using the word "target" implies that China is wilfully and intentionally trying to poison America, and only America, with its crappy products.  I don't think even you believe that.

EgosumDominus -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 1:01:38 PM)

No...I don’t think that are just poisoning Americans. I think they are poisoning anyone who is uninformed worldwide.

But you don’t seem to be focused on the issue...just the presentation.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 1:03:51 PM)

Actually, I've already written several things about this issue.  Evidently you've failed to notice them.

Why don't you just admit that the word "target" was silly and inaccurate, instead of attacking the person who was kind enough to point this out to you?  That's a sign of an immature mind.

EgosumDominus -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 1:08:09 PM)

That was not an attack on my part. My attacks are far less pleasant than that statement I made.
I could have used a better heading for the subject...admitted.
So that debate is over.

Now on to the subject.

GrizzlyBear -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 1:34:47 PM)

The Chinese are equal opportunity poisoners, they are quite willing to poison Chinese to make a few bucks.  The CEO of a major Chinese drug company was recently sentenced to be executed for allowing the use of toxic adulterants in his company's products which resulted in several deaths of Chinese.  Most of the products recently in the news were also sold to the Chinese.

China is not the only offender.  Some few years back, there was a huge scandal in India where used transformer oil laden with PCBs was being sold - in India - as cooking oil.

In general, I feel it is best to avoid Chinese products if you can, not just for reasons of toxic contaminants, but because IMHO they will one day be our enemies, and the more dependant our economy is on their imports, the more we will suffer when we can't get them.  It's not too late.  Buy American, sure, if you can.  If not, just don't buy Chinese.  There are lots of friendlier third world countries willing to sell us inexpensive products.  Very few things are available only from China at good prices.

popeye1250 -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 1:35:37 PM)

It's not just food and toothpaste.
On the News yesterday they said that there are millions of defective Chinese tires (tyres) on American cars now too!
So check your car's tires and if they're made in China get rid of them!
About 12 years ago my sister bought a cheap pair of shoes for work.
In 5 days of wear the soles started comming right off of them.

Ethylene Glycol in leather would not be an issue unless you put it in your mouth.  I know of no use for Ethylene Glycol in leather tanning.  Since it's a liquid its presence would be pretty obvious.

However much leather is tanned using hexavalent Chromium salts - its called Chrome Tanned, and is often detectable by being yellow all the way through, unless vat dyed.  Noticeable levels of chromium salts are retained in the leather.  They are quite toxic, and a known carcinogen if ingested.  All countries that tan leather make some chrome tanned leather.  It is widely used in shoes, garments, and upholstery; you can hardly get away from it.  It causes no problems if in contact with skin, as far as I know.  In the mouth is another matter.

Don't put leather in your mouth, unless you know it to be entirely Vegetable tanned.

I wholeheartedly agree with this - But they're cutting their throat either way.

For the record....I try to purchase the least amount of inferior-made Chinese products possible....but really, with this type of globaloney, it's hard to avoid a great many of them.

kiyari -> Boycott the Pimps (6/30/2007 2:40:53 PM)

I used to make an effort to not buy anything made in China.

It was extremely difficult to find things not made there.

Some years ago (and with the loss of my career to out-sourcing) I stopped trying.

Shopped at Wal-Mart for the FIRST time, last year *sigh*.

Not making that a habit, though.

If one would strike back at all the Made-in-China, might be worthwhile to boycott the products of Multi-Nationals who do business there... including not having any of their paper in your portfolios and suchlike.

Heh... anyone else hearing the tune from "Mission: Impossible"?

Thanks for the info, but Glycol has no place in toothpaste or leather and that is my point. Bit of a play on example.
However, being in the leather business I will let you know that using antifreeze to tan reptile and other hides has been used in the past. Poor mans tanning and I strongly recommend against it.
And just about any chemical can be absorbed through the skin...thats a fact.

But my point about the leather goods from China is that no one knows what they use on the leather. And at this point I would not be surprised if they use lead based chemicals to dye/paint their hides or oils that are highly contaminated during manufacturing. And that included oils used for the machines.

And as someone stated ...now tires are being recalled.

Like I said...tip of the iceberg.

cjenny -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 4:29:13 PM)

It is very hard to purchase Made In America items only. Many items aren't even marked as Chinese made, just marked on the parent company.

Does anyone other than me think about the Chinese workers in all of this? I thought about them years ago. I, me hehehe was the person that went through everyyyyyy single blueprint plan for the first GM factory built there. (Sorry for bragging but I think that is just too cool). I wondered then if there was going to be any emphasis on safety or if it would be up to the owners whims. Oops I tangented in my own post, onwards we go.

I've toured factories and plants there. As hard as it can be to buy American here, there is less of a choice there. These workers are saturated with chemical exposure & the pollution is horrific.
They export so much and to so many places, I don't think that will change.

I wish however, that the working conditions there would change. One factory was a silk factory. Intense heat inside and very dim lighting. All of the workers were women, they sat on the teensiest metal chair I've ever seen & spent their days dipping their hands into boiling water to snag a cocoon. They don't get breaks. They eat there & keep glass jars of tea at their sides until they are done.
If the manufacturing conditions changed then it would not only change the quality of goods but also their places of work.

I love China, the friendliest & gentlest of people who thought nothing of going far out of their way to help. Example, I was trying to find a certain market in Shanghai & per my usual self got lost [&:] .
When I showed a street sweeper where I was trying to go she set her broom aside and actually walked the 2 miles with me to make sure I would get there. I speak almost no Cantonese (I can say 'hello, how are you' 'thank you' and 'no' lol) yet everyone I met was helpful beyond belief.

A foreign speaking person seeking help on the streets here would likely be ignored & passed by.

Another example. It was evening when I found the greatest tea shop, I hadn't enough cash on me for all I wanted to purchase so one of the clerks walked me over a mile to a bank then back to the shop.

Yet you cannot even use tap water to rinse your teeth. The air pollution in Beijing is so tangible that you can actually taste it when you lick your lips.

And yes I did eat dog while there. [8D] Possibly a cat too but I'm not sure, nor am I sure I want to know!

Just something to think about. So many there depend on our buying their goods. Yet their goods are more and more often likely to contain things we do not want to consume.

If one eats the blowfish bladder pie and the amazonian poisonous tip dart treefrog pop tarts in moderation-----well....

EgosumDominus -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 4:51:14 PM)

Touching story cjenny.
But I missed the part about murdering female infants in order to keep the male population up. A story a friend told mine told me many years ago. He still wonders what his sister would have been like.

No sympathy here.

cjenny -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 5:02:59 PM)

Well I guess that is where we differ. I empathize with those that haven't the choice to change their world, most Chinese have little recourse.
I do not blame those people for the ills of their entire country.

On the matter you mentioned there are several interesting aspects.
Many rural areas are so desperate for marraigable females that it has been encouraged to go with cousins.
If one has the money one can (I do not know the correct phrasing for this next bit) purchase the right to have more children. It is not one-child-only-per-family. If a girl is born there is not a problem trying for a boy on the second go round. Now if it is again a girl? That.. I do not know.
I looked at the children closely for concerning this, it was very hard to see if the males out balanced the females.

Finally, again something I tried to look for and failed to find.
Handicapped people. There were very few handicapped people among the public.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Poisonous Chinese Imports target America (6/30/2007 7:19:54 PM)

Well, I agree with most of what you wrote, but the route to creating better working conditions for Chinese laborers cannot be to keep manufacturing tainted products.  That's a great way to throw the Chinese economy into a tailspin.

The Chinese government has finally started taking the problem seriously and even sentenced the head of their Food & Drug Administration to death for taking bribes.  When you make those guys in the CCP look bad, they pull out all the stops.  So I expect some serious measures to be taken to prevent future scandals.

Not that any of this will improve the working conditions of Chinese laborers...

Maybe I didn't write my thought well enough. But I keep hoping that by changing the entire manufacturing process, that will also change working conditions.
