milk- chease, ice cream, dairy prices are to escalate in a few days. this due to high fuel costs and the fact that corn ment for cows is going to make fuel for cars.

i heard it on ktla, or cnn, i forget which.

3 days they figure.

milk is $1.79 1/2 gallon whole.

Ho ho ho here. Forget the 2% and 1%, the price is most reflective in whole milk.

It is about four buck a gallon here, with a pretty hefty discount for 2%, 1% etc. You really have to look at the ads.

In Terminator style I would like to say something.

I used to buy 3.8%, and I considered myself lucky to get it. Now in the stores even full milk is maybe 3.5% at best.

With 2% and 1% do you think you are getting a deal ? It is not a matter of simply adding water, you could do that yourself. They are selling what they take out of the milk. It sells to icecream companies, and who knows who else, other food processing plants. Just like when they refinre salt.

Yup, I could add my own water, but that is not what thwey are doing. They are taking the good things out of milk. And they are selling them for more than they get for the milk. Wouldn't you ?

and you think you have problems.....

Milk in the UK costs the equivalent of USD 4-00 per gallon, or 50 cents per pint. Its sold in litres of course, but we got round that one by selling however many millilitres = 1 pint. That showed them in Brussels!

The problem we have though, is that the farmers who produce the milk are only getting around 35 cents per pint - a loss of about 2 cents per pint, at the point of production. Even with some pretty hefty EU subsidies, dairy herds are being sold off for slaughter all over the country, because farmers cant continue with the price they get.

The reason for this? Its down to the supermarkets here, who have such a strong position that it is they who determine the price at wholesale for all manner of agricultural production - with no regard whatsoever paid to the cost of production or the people who produce. Milk though is a prime example, in that the supermarkets regard offering it at low price to the consumer as a means of bringing people into their stores to buy other things - the supermarket still makes money on it, as do any middle men, its the little guy who actually does the work who suffers.

The result is, that we are no longer self sufficient in milk, and as the supermarkets continue their scouting of the markets, more of it is being imported all the time, when we have more than enough means and know how to make it ourselves.

Now, we can say that this is just the workings of the market, and that it is inevitable and acceptable for the unsuccessful farmers to go to the wall. But the farmers are actually very successful and highly efficient - it is the abuse of market position by supermarkets which has brought all this about. Furthermore, this is not like producing luxury items that we could do without - this is about producing the essentials of life. All that is required is a few poor harvests elsewhere in the world, which given global warming et al appears likely at some stage, and there will be no imports coming in and in the meantime we will have lost our means of producing food at all for ourselves.

Still, no paper shuffing rich people will be harmed in the resultant famine, so all is well with the world.

Cows don't eat corn, they eat grass.

If the cows you eat are eating corn, someone's ripping you off.

.. Actually.. they do eat corn... or a corn feed "mixture" of sorts... in fact.. milk-producing cows eat about 12-18lbs of it, every day.

Speaking of Ethanol.. does anybody know precisely how gasoline an Ethanol plant uses on a daily basis? Does anybody know of a study that proves Ethanol emissions are better for the environment?

Cows eat vegetation, which includes corn.  I have even seen them eat cactus in Texas before.  You obviously have never spent much time on a farm.

There are two types of corn, field corn and people corn.
Field corn for livestock consumption is maybe 6% to 8% protien, a good diary farmer will boost his feed to some where around 16% protien. Many diffrent types of feed to get the boost soybean, alfalfa, cotton seed etc.

I saw a real funny at a health food grocery store, "grass fed beef"

mnottertail -> RE: milk prices to skyrocket!/price where u r? (6/29/2007 11:04:10 AM)

they will take a fuck of a dive for the winter, everybody is getting into growing corn, it is like pigfarming out there.  The getrichquick corn scheme will fail miserably for a lot of reasons, the capacity this country has to process it into ethanol (which of all the things to process into ethanol, corn is a very piss poor choice) principal among them, with a resulting surfiet of corn.  people on the cusp of these corn futures are gonna be selling their ass on the street in the fimbul winter. And companies like ADM, ConAgra et al., are willing to steer that bobsled straight to fuckin' hell for ya, they ain't riding it.

So for the summer, make it lemonade.

Grass fed beef is the best type of beef you can buy.  Not all cows are grass fed.

mnottertail -> RE: milk prices to skyrocket!/price where u r? (6/29/2007 11:40:45 AM)

The reason that grass fed beef is the best, is because they do not gain weight like the feeders operations (which is mostly fat) they generally ingest lest chemicals as well, but the poundage is where the money is so 'free-range' beef usually is not a large market for big operators, the money comes in finishing (read fattening up and laying on the weight) cattle is judged, bought and weighed skin on for the most part. Of course, for the while, when milk goes up, at some point feeder cattle will become more expensive, so the meat goes up, true for swine to some degree as well.

Maybe that's why we're paying 6 bucks a gallon, and the milk TASTES LIKE MILK.

  Correct, Emmi Belle. Many daries grow corn for silage, as well as using ground corn as a main ingredient in other dairy feed. Evidently FB didn't do his research, as grass-fed cows are poor milkers...not enough protein.
   I also wonder how much research has gone into Ethanol. It was around, for a short time, in the 70's/80's...then kind of faded away. Probably do the same, this time...but it's a good excuse to manipulate other commodities...such as milk...for a period of time.

Ethanol is the GAS COMPANIES WAY OF HOLDING THEIR LOCK.

We *HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY* to launch and use a constellation of Solar Satellites, beaming ZERO EMISSION ENERGY down to a network of ground stations.

Then you have Priuses which just plug into the grid, and you NEVER NEED TO GO TO THE GAS STATION EVER AGAIN.

IT WOULD COST LESS THAN WE'VE ALREADY SPENT DICKING AROUND IN IRAQ.

Now, go ask the White House why they committed felony fraud to get us into Iraq, instead of ensuring our national security???
