Sometimes, perhaps most of the time, the only difference is what they or their master choose to call themselves.

I know of submissives who live very strict 24/7 lifestyles and slaves who live very relaxed lifestyles. It really doesn't seem to matter.

I agree with Sir Dominic - that answer seems to be a good starting point for those new to the lifestyle.

It is only after living the lifestyle for a while that one begins to see the finer points of the differences.

For me it is a fine line - depending on the Dom/Master.
