MzMia -> Is HDTV any good? worth getting? (6/26/2007 9:45:28 PM)

Sorry, I meant Direct t.v. not HDTV!  I can't keep up with all the stuff coming out anymore.

I have digital cable t.v. and I keep seeing these ads for Direct t.v.{sorry not hdtv, but direct t.v.}!
It seems to be much cheaper, but is it better than digital cable t.v.?
Does anyone here have Direct t.v.?
Do you like it?  My cable basically never goes out, maybe once a year for a few hours at the most.

I would love to save some $$$, but I don't want to sign up for a nightmare and a bunch of crap.
The commercial I just saw said Direct t.v. would soon have more channels than cable.
Sounds interesting, any advice appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

you are looking at one right now LOL

i have this kick ass big tv and i rarely turn it on.  most of the time i watch this 21" hu res puter monitor and movies that has perfect picture and color etc.

As far as quality is concerned its way better than hdtv.;

do you have a hdtv set?  they used to hit you up for an additional cost for an adapter, so be sure it is included.   if you ar ea super pic buf its worth it

I am sorry, I meant DIRECT TV!
lol

I am thinking about getting Direct TV instead of cable.
But I used to hear it was a nightmare.
RealOne, there is too much technology to keep up with these days.
PC's, laptops, blackberries, fancy cell phones, Ipods, hdtvs, I can't keep track of it all.

farglebargle -> RE: Is HDTV any good? worth getting? (6/26/2007 10:02:03 PM)

Data Point:

I watch media ( Movies, TiVo, Comic Books, etc. ) on a Viewsonic Value-line 19" LCD Computer Monitor. It was under $200.00.

I download and watch LOST, particularly b/c it's the HDTV feed, and frankly, I'm spoiled for it, it looks so much better than the 640x480/320x240 Standard Def.

I have not looked into what "Living Room Tech" would be, but HDTV Projectors are a reasonable option, I hear.

We have had Direct Tv for a year now and have been very pleased with it. The only problem was when an animal gnawed some of the wires. Otherwise there has been no problems. We have HD tv's but don't have the HD satellite reception yet. I have heard that cable can be very disappointing in HD. The picture on many of the channels is grainy.

MzMia -> RE: Is HDTV any good? worth getting? (6/26/2007 10:08:27 PM)

Thank you babygirl!  I really do want HDTV and I had not heard about
the poor cable picture quality.
Interesting, keep the animals off the wires!

Thanks fargle, but do you have Direct t.v.?

farglebargle -> RE: Is HDTV any good? worth getting? (6/26/2007 10:10:04 PM)

Nope. BASIC Cable. 72 channels, and nothing's on.

I have the "TiVo" ( MythTV, actually ) record things off of AMC, TCM, whatever looks good, and I watch it whenever I can.

That, and the Dr. Who torrents each Saturday evening.

MzMia -> RE: Is HDTV any good? worth getting? (6/26/2007 10:19:05 PM)

Well fargle, maybe you need to consider DirectT.V.
The commercial I just saw said you would soon be able to get over 250 channels
and it costs about $30 on up.
Basic Cable is probably all I really need.
But now I am hooked on this On Demand feature.[;)]

I have a High Def TV and have a cable High Def provider and thats not true at least for mine (Comcast).  The picture quality on a high def channel, for a tv show filmed and broadcast in high def is just extrodenarily (sp) sharp.  Its fucking addictive.  The trick is watching a high def filmed show that is broadcast in high def and then the picture (and sound) quality will be just... awesome!

C~

MzMia -> RE: Is HDTV any good? worth getting? (6/26/2007 10:30:30 PM)

C, I bet!
I look at them in the stores and in other peoples homes.

The picture quality can be so sharp and clear it is awesome.
My problem is it will take me a while to decide which one to get!
Ugh

We had direct, it is the same just a different interface you need to get used to.
However, depending on the part of the country you live in.  You cannot get local  channels or
you can.  When we lived in California we never had a single issue with direct.
Moved to the midwest and movers connection seriously dropped the ball.  The contractor they hired
to set it up...did it all wrong.  Then didn't realize he had...and said our converters were no good.
Direct sent new ones to California knowing we were in the midwest.
Anyway, to make a long story short.  After an agonizing two months dealing with direct on the telephone.
We finally got the 400 bill for new converters off of our bill.  Cancelled service and went with dish.
Who did happen to offer local channels here.

So my advice is this.  If you live in a populated area and they offer you local channels you probably can't go wrong.  If you live in a semi rural area do a lot of research with your neighbors first.
As far as television viewing, its pretty much the same as cable...just a bit cheaper.

Thank you so much!  This is just what I needed to here.
I am copying and pasting this.
I live 5 minutes from Washington D.C. so I think I will be fine!
When I go down south, I will research further.

Thank you again for sharing!
**Calling Direct T.V. today**[:)]

Aileen68 -> RE: Is HDTV any good? worth getting? (6/28/2007 10:46:43 AM)

I've had directv for eleven years now.  Love it.
I do loose signal right before it starts to pour so I always know when the rain is coming.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Is DirecTV any good? worth getting? (6/28/2007 1:15:19 PM)

I have DirecTV and haven't had any serious problems with it.  By coincidence, my Tivo box blew out last night, but the nice Spanish lady at Customer Service said it was covered under my protection plan (so that means get the protection plan!) and they're sending me a new one.  Another advantage of DirecTV is that they don't scramble anything.  In other words, when I Tivo something from the satellite, I can record it afterwards right onto a DVD and keep it forever.  I've heard that if you have cable, they scramble the signal, so if you try to record anything onto a DVD or VHS tape, you'll only get gibberish.

However, I don't like it SOOOOOO much that I wouldn't replace it with anything cheaper.  There are some problems.  First, as Aileen has mentioned, your picture can go out when it rains or snows.  Also, if you ever want to upgrade to HD, you'll need to get a whole new dish.  Keep that in mind.  Sometimes they offer incentives on that, and sometimes they don't.  So it can be pricey if you're not watchful about the available offers.

When Verizon FIOS finally becames available in my area, I am going to make the big switch and get internet, phone, and TV through them.

Edited to change the thread title.
