SimplyMichael -> Mostly a Rant on Generalizations (6/26/2007 5:46:56 PM)

Hold on I am on a rant! If someone says "most blonds are stupid" the fact that you are blond does not mean that he called you stupid. That the fact that you are blond and smart means also doesn't mean ALL blonds are smart. I chose blonds out of thin air but I just finished reading a thread where people were talking about how young adults are MOSTLY immature and not experienced enough to do certain things. Again, MOSTLY means that the fact that YOU just turned 18 and either:

  • Are mature yourself doesn't negate the fact that MOST aren't.
  • Think you are mature and don't yet have the experience to realize you don't know shit.

So, for the record, when someone is making a point about something and says any of the following:

  • Most
  • Many
  • Generally
  • Often
  • Usually
  • Occasionally
  • Frequently
  • Probably

They are NOT attacking YOU they are speaking of a general principle. Like saying in the middle of summer it is often hot. The fact that you might get a cool day does not negate the fact that summer is probably hot.

Not everything is about you, exceptions are just that exceptions. If you are one but can't show that almost everything is the same as you and that in fact the person was wrong to use MOST (or its derivatives) by showing that they instead should have said FEW, then try and remember that when you respond. Perhaps as follows:

Interesting post about why MOST do X. I don't know anyone else as a frame of reference so I don't know how true the statement is but I DO do X.

OR

Interesting post about why MOST do X. All the people I know in my BDSM community which is Large/Medium/Small DOES do X so I am not sure your premise is true.

OR

My gut doesn't believe you that MOST do X but I have little to go on. Can you provide more evidence to back up your claim.

NEVER POST THIS!

I live in an isolated research station in Antarctica and nobody I know wears shorts outside so you are wrong when you say many people wear shorts outside...

Yes, yes it is. I am the world, y'all revolve around me

I couldn't resist and I believe most people couldn't either if they had my sense of humor....

basically, alot of people read what they want to read in things. Or sometimes certain words will hit them in a certain way.  And not to forget their particular moods and perceptions that day.

**I like your new pic, SimplyMichael, sexy**

Hey!  I'm blonde and I'm young!  Definitely sure you were talking about me now.... I think that 'exceptions' just get tired of being treated like they are not and perhaps -over the internet- do not choose to express that in the wisest of ways?

Lordandmaster -> RE: Mostly a Rant on Generalizations (6/26/2007 6:14:37 PM)

I think rants about generalizations suck.

Yeah, yeah, just being facetious.

ExSteelAgain -> RE: Mostly a Rant on Generalizations (6/26/2007 6:48:30 PM)

Those bullet headings could be considered a direct attack, especially the dot ones, but correct me if I'm wrong. Why would you consider in such a derogatorry manner those who have such relationships where generalizations are used? You can only answer in 5 lines or less.

philosophy -> RE: Mostly a Rant on Generalizations (6/26/2007 7:01:23 PM)

...all generalisations are wrong?.....[:)]

Damn...surprised to see the post moved over here, Michael. I hope you realize I was agreeing with you in a sarcastic way.

Michael, as ideal as this would seem you will never get everyone to pull their head out of their ass. All people should lighten up. We all must understand that everything that is said on the boards is always right. All of us should know by now that generalizations mean what they say. Everyone should get a life.

Wait... should I have been speaking more generally?

Come on now Michael, tell us how you really feel!?  [8D]

All generalizations are dangerous, even this one.

(From an 8th grade language arts textbook)

Making Generalizations

A generalization is a broad statement about a particular subject, a statement that may be based on a number of facts or observations about the subject.  For example, if you study surveys or reports about the world’s climate, you might make the generalization that “The planet is getting warmer.”  To make good generalizations, be sure to review all the available evidence.  However, avoid making generalizations that are too broad; these may be invalid or false.  Words such as “all” "most" or “none”, etc. often signal generalizations that are too broad.

Hasty Generalizations

Fallacy of Insufficient Statistics, Fallacy of Insufficient Sample, Leaping to A Conclusion, Hasty Induction.

This fallacy is committed when a person draws a conclusion about a population based on a sample that is not large enough.

Hasty Generalization is committed when the sample (the observed instances) is too small.  It is important to have samples that are large enough when making a generalization.

People often commit Hasty Generalizations because of bias or prejudice.
