This is in my hometown. It was all over the news today. The police have been doing this kind of crap for years, and I am glad someone finally caught it on tape. I only wish they had cell phone cameras and youtube when I was a teenager. They placed this guy on administrative leave, and the department is already making excuses and saying he is a rogue.

I saw that, it's all over Myspace too - I think it's totally disgusting - an outrage, chokeholding and violence towards a teenage girl and violence towards teenage boys is NOT acceptable from anyone

There's two sides to every story. Our student newspaper (college campus) is full of stories about how student health is facing a rash of injuries in which skateboarders are hitting pedestrians. Take a 150 lb man and put him on a skateboard. Then send him flying down a sidewalk full of unsuspecting pedestrians and you have a recipe for broken bones and concussions. Sounds like these young men were fully aware of the public safety ordinance against riding on the sidewalk and they chose to ignore it. Then when caught, they chose to disobey a law enforcement officer and resist arrest.

If you can't do the time, then don't do the crime imo.

Police spokesman McCrary Means identified two of those arrested as Matthew Jon McCormack, 21, and Skylar Nalls, 19, both of Hot Springs. Means said McCormack faces a misdemeanor battery charge after allegedly pushing or striking a 67-year-old city employee during the melee. Nalls was cited for skateboarding and faces misdemeanor charges of fleeing and obstructing governmental operations.

Means said four juveniles involved in the incident also face skateboarding citations and resisting arrest charges.

McCormack, who works at Hot Springs' Funbox Skateshop, said both he and Nalls were free on $1,000 bond. McCormack said most of the juveniles remained at home on house arrest.

"It's never been an issue. They made that rule a long time ago, but I've skated down through there all the time and it's never been a problem," McCormack said. "It was kind of shocking for it to be such a huge issue."

That's true, but that law has been on the books here since I was a kid in the late 80's. It is a misdemeanor and it is not any worse than jaywalking. This is a tourist town. Right across the street from where you see that taking place is a national park, and is patrolled by National Park Service police. The park rangers are never that damned heavy handed with skateboarders, and they prohibit skateboarding on the sidewalk too.

What really irritates me about this is the selective enforcement that is done in the downtown area. Every year we have a rally here for a Harley Davidson owners group. They ride up and down the damn streets running their bikes in between stopped cars. Most of them are in violation of the noise ordinances and state muffler laws. But they are all out of town, middle aged men that spend money in the local hotels, restaurants, and taverns. I never see any of them get arrested. These kids are locals, and they don't contribute to the tourism business. So they are fair game to the police.

All the charges you heard rattled off are mostly bullshit. Stacking charges is a favorite tactic of police departments, and I can tell you right now that the police officer you saw told a lot of tall tales in the report.
