Reruns of a TV commercial from the 1950s which urged viewers to "go to work on an egg" have been banned.

An advertising watchdog said the slogan went against the principle of eating a varied diet.

The Egg Information Service had wanted to screen the advert, which featured comedian Tony Hancock, to celebrate its 50th birthday.

Author Fay Weldon, who headed the team which came up with the slogan, has described the decision as absurd.

This is as silly as it comes. So what is next? A ban on all food ads? There are few things that are worse than a nanny state.

How true.
I heard somewhere, and I do not know how true this is (sorry...spreading a rumor further), that fluoride had once been used to make prisoners more docile. Kind of makes me think twice about the public water supply, and couple this with the regulation of diet and someone somewhere has a good idea about keeping or gaining control over the general populace. Perhaps I am thinking too much into this- need a second cup of tea. :)

Youre all getting the wrong end of the stick here.

The problem is that the name Tony Hancock is associated with the repression of and prejudice shown towards people who choose to have their bodies altered so that their toes are on their knees and their genitals are on their hands.

Clearly this old TV ad cannot be screened, because of the offensive nature of the actor's name.

I hope this clears things up for you.

I thought Tony was just a shortening of Anthony----

Wow, who knew all that was behind the scene?

LadyEllen, did they spell it wrong then; "Tony Handcock?"

Big Brother is very alive and very well in the UK; they have more surveillance cameras per square mile than any other country on the planet.  Does this also mean that they have the biggest cache of saucy voyeur footage anywhere???

Quite probably - if they save their footage, that is. In a privacy study I read this spring, it turns out  - who knew? - that [human-monitored] surveiilance cams tend to pick out, focus on, and require close-ups of scantily clad, attractive women...

Yes there is.. an 'au pair' state, which appears to be what Britain is becoming (the Government can't afford a nanny state).
