Rumtiger -> Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 4:05:52 AM)

I'm having a little problem with my cat. (cmon you guys shoulda saw that joke coming a mile away).

I'm trying to get him to eat this urinary tract dietary food. Unfortunetly, since hes as picky and stubborn as...well...me, he absolutly refuses to eat it. Instead he consistantly begs for his old food, and any attempts to coerce him into eating his UT food food fails since the little bastards too smart for his own good. I've tried mixing a little bit of his old food with the diet stuff, but he instead just pushes the UT stuff out of the way and just munches at his old stuff, i've tried using a container where the old stuff in on tthe bottem and diet stuff is only on top, he just digs it up and eats the old stuff (deli cat) with his paws. And if i'm stern and just give him the diet stuff and nothing else no matter what type (I've tried 4 brands so far, all with the same effect) he'll just look at it and say "fuck you" and barely even nibble at the stuff.

So...help me out? Anybody got any ideas on how to get a cat to eat something they dont wnat to eat? He'll propably eat it if he gets hungry enough, but I dont want to see my cat stubbornly starving himself either.

Try adding something new and yummy, I use broasted chicken or canned salmon.

mistoferin -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 6:20:59 AM)

Rum, what is the old food and what is the new food?

instynctive -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 6:24:15 AM)

Get yourself a coffee  grinder ($10 at WalMart), and grind up the new food.. mix it in with some wet food or with some sort of "treat" (salmon, tuna, etc.)

That might work..

This is exactly why every man should have a back-up plan when it comes to pussy....Your siamese not behaving properly? Well there is this cute little tabby right down the block.

Never fails with my neighbour's cat who's adopted me - pretend to eat it yourself and he'll come begging for it.

First, please don't ever withhold food from a cat...if he is being picky, make SURE he is eating something, don't assume that if you hold back all the other food he'll eat the prescription food...if he doesn't, he can be at risk for more severe illnesses. While a dog can go a day of so without food with no ill effects, a cat can't.

I don't know if the food you are trying to get him to eat is wet or dry, but the way you are describing him digging through it makes it sound like it's dry. Adding a can of wet food to his diet is going to help the urinary tract anyway, so start with that, another thing you can try is taking a chicken and boiling it, then soaking the food you want the cat to eat in the liquid until it is soft and mushy, then mix the food with some of the chicken or regular wet cat food.

Catnip, Rumtiger!  Get him all happy and playful, wear him out and he will get the munchies.  Mix some of his favorite fish or canned food on top of the new dry food.  Be sure to get the good quality catnip, try a store that sells fresh herbs. You can also get kitty greens already grown in a planter for him to munch at his leisure indoors.

Personally, I would cock his head back every few hours and make him eat about 2-3 tablespoons worth of this new food by force if need be. Use something like a popsicle stick to force it down onto the back of the tongue. Make sure the tool is smooth and cannot cause the animal injury.

Do you brush your cats teeth also? Sure, they don't like it - but if it must be done it will be done!

Alumbrado -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 8:56:40 AM)

Just put down the new food, and leave it... if the domestic feline organism becomes strangely silent and refuses to move for a few days, you may have gone too far, but I'm betting that won't happen, even though it seems that your's has you pretty well trained...[:D]

popeye1250 -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 9:29:01 AM)

Put the cat's head in a vice...
Just kidding, yeah, chop it up and mix it in with a treat.
I have a tube of hairball medicine that's real sticky and gooey.
The first time I tried to give it to "Bubba" in his mouth that didn't work too good but I spilled some on his paw and he licked it off.
*THEN* I read the directions and it said, "apply to cat's paw..."

Rumtiger.....

First, are urinary tract  infections a problem with your cat?  If they aren't, don't worry about them....I have had cats for years, and never once had a problem with urinary tract infections or problems of any kind.  Pet food companies jump on the same "healthy" foods bandwagon that human companies do.......hence the 50 different kinds of cat foods out there.  I give mine the indoor cat variety, and they do fine on it.  If your cat doesn't eat wet foods, take a piece of advice.....DON'T start him on it!  Trust me, I'd love to totally wean mine off the canned stuf....it's expensive, but not much seems to be digested, and it shows in the litter box!  I actually mix an indoor cat food vareity, and Science Diet Oral care and Hairball formula.  Seems to work fine.

Yes, kitty will eat when he gets hungry enough, but it's not healthy to let them reach the point that they are desperate for food...cats lose weight much faster than dogs, and getting back on them is tricky.  When I got my oldest cat, he was homesick, didn't eat, and lost half of his weight in less than a week....yes, he finally started eating....unfortunately, he hasn't STOPPED!  :)

Good luck with kitty......don't feel too bad about being trained.....they do it to all of us!  I think they are actually an alien race from outer space sent to insidiously take over the human race!  Damn good at it too!

lilsubl -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 10:51:12 AM)

i would go with the chicken or fish juice on the food...my small dog is terminal & he decided not to eat for a few days...i drained a can of salmon onto his food & he ate it all & is still eating like a healthy animal...he just needed a jumpstart!

Arpig -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 12:19:52 PM)

put the new food down and leave it...he will get hungry enough to eat it in time. No cat will starve themselves. along the lines of making it more palatable for him, try putting a bit of vegetable oil on it

brightspot -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 12:53:59 PM)

Hi Rumtiger, I am wondering if this UT problem is along the lines of if he strays from this diet, blockage will happen?

I had a cat who had this problem and my vet did an operation where he opened the uninary track making it more like a urethra. It was a long time ago, but maybe you could mention this to your vet, this operation was successful and my cat never had problems urinating again.

Good Luck!
Missy.

Rumtiger -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 4:32:19 PM)

Alright heres the skinny:

He eats dry food, old food is deli cat, new food brands are purina one and three other things the vet gave me, he treats them all the same. Yeah he just got over bacterial blockage, and while food is not a big factor I do want to have him start on this diet just to be safe. I'm not going to have him go on another medical procedure seeing as I just finished shelling out about 2 grand already so i'm prettyd ry in the wallet. He hates...HATES wet food, so trying to mix anything like that in would be a bit of a negative. Same goes with human food, the most he would do if you gave him some would be a quick nibble just to see what you where eating and then he would lose interest.

As for the whole treat idea, like I said, he knows how to push everything he heates aside and go for the good stuff.

The catip might work. So we'll see, heres hoping that kitty pot will come through.

daddysblondie -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 4:36:50 PM)

The place where we adopted our cat suggested if we were going to switch the cats food that we start by mixing the old food with the new food. Eventually you put less of the old and more of the new until he's eating nothing but the new food.

Probably better than waiting until he gets hungry enough to eat the new stuff...

windchymes -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 4:53:24 PM)

Some cats are prone to kidney stones just like some humans are, and they're definitely related to diet.  What causes the urethral blockage are tiny "crystals" that, when they enlarge, actually look like sand in their bladder.  When the cat tries to pass them, they get jammed up in the tiny urethra and they can't pass them OR their urine.  Male cats are more susceptible to blockage because their urethras are much longer than females', so the sand gets stuck.   They're also more susceptible to bacterial infection then.  The bacteria itself doesn't CAUSE the blockage.

The special diets are low in ash and other minerals that cause the kidney and bladder crystals.  Unfortunately, they are also low in good flavor.  Mixing the regular food in with it, over time, is going to cause the cat to form crystals again. The special diet food doesn't have something in it that prevents the crystals forming, but rather,  it's LACKING or low in substances that increase the tendency to form crystals.   So mixing the special food with regular food just puts right back in what you're trying to keep out.

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you on how to get the cat to eat it.  Good luck!  (Too bad they don't have some kind of cat food "spritzer" like those salad dressing spritzers that you could just spritz on the yucky food to make it taste good but still keep them healthy!)

carolsea -> RE: Some pussy assistance please (6/25/2007 5:15:46 PM)

What about a large syringe used to force-feed him?  Actually I wasn't so sure about the force feeding idea, but I googled it, and apparently people do that when their cat won't eat for some reason.  (But I wouldn't use a popsicle stick, no.)  The only thing is the danger of the cat aspirating the food into the lungs.  But forcing it might get him used to the taste of the new food.

Good luck!
