lilsubl -> me want cookie -- help! (6/23/2007 4:26:03 PM)

i've been caring for my former mother-in-law for the last couple of weeks...she's very tiny--4'8" & 100 lbs--& i have problems getting her to eat enough real food...she quit smoking last year & has since developed this HUGE craving for sweets...she's elderly, so it's kinda like trying to raise a little kid...there have been times that she will say she doesn't want lunch or dinner & then sneak cookies & cake...so, i got to thinking that there must be good-for-you sweets that i might make for her that would add to her nutrition, rather than subntract from it...i was thinking in terms of cookies made with molasses & whole grains & wheat germ & stuff like that, but i don't have any recipes...i could try making something up, but i don't have a lot of time for trial & error, yanno?

anybody have any good recipes for something like this?  or other ideas on how to give her nutrition?  any help will be ever so much appreciated.....

Maybe try fruit & yogurt smoothies?

my mom was about the same size and there were often times she could not eat-but she could LIVE on ensure milkshakes-a can of ensure(she loved the chocolate), maybe a lil ice cream and/or ice, run it through the blender.

the ensure provides the nutritional requirements of a meal, and the added calories arent bad for someone who has troubles eating.

not cookies, but sweet and she may go for it.

South Beach Cookies (Kraft Foods) are made with whole grains and almost no sugar. Also there are a lot of healthy protein bars available.  I like the Kashi Bars best--whole grains and very low in sugar. Lara Bars are made from just fruit and nuts.

Have you tried baked apples, bread pudding, really anything with oatmeal, all good sources of fiber and calories, that should be sweet enough to satisfy her. Have mailed you some recipes, let me know if you need more...

http://allrecipes.com/ is a very good resource for recipes. Their Healthy Living section is broken down by category, including Sugar free, Low Cholesterol, etc..

My mother was like that when she was alive.
Give her the shake and don't mention the "yogurt" word.  Use ice cream instead.
She will suck it down and never know.

As far as recipes, none.  I improvised a lot, still do.
I grind up oatmeal and add it to cookies.  Flax seed and wheat germ.
Gring up about half of the oatmeal the cookie needs, maybe a little more.  Add the rest.
Just don't add it by cupfulls.  Go easy because you are only adding more dry ingredients and less liquid.
Use the new splenda half sugar, half fake mixtures.  It really makes for a decent cookie that you cannot
tell the difference with.  Carob chips instead of chocolate chips.
There are a lot of things you can do.  It does work.  When I first met my dom he used to have problems
going to the bathroom regularily.  So, I cooked him up a batch of cookies everyweek.  He took them to
work and snacked on them.  Before long his whole office was seeing the bathroom more than normal.
Throw in some fruist and nuts and you've created a healthy cookie.
Good Luck
