You do know that when Morrison was singing about Fire, he wasn't just talking metaphorically?

The ability of Live Concerts and the gatherings around the events to mobilize youth was a very real threat. There was no counter to the threat than to make the point, "Stay A-Political", whine all you want, but don't try to *do* anything. And that lesson was well learned.

That's one perspective on it. Others will disagree or dismiss it.

And that essentially rebellious kernel is what makes the music not suck.

covering the local music scene for over a year now - there's another reason why the recording industry have declining sales - local indie bands (such as A Birdsong Valentine, JaGoFF, Disonic, etc - actual band names) have exploded with large fanbase near and far ...they are heard on the net and local radio stations rocking out packed venues with music the FANS want to hear. 

independent radio stations like the one i work for (Fearless Radio) are sent thousands of CDs a month from bands and/or fans ...the fans of the station control the playlist - they tell us what's good, bad and downright ugly.  also with net radio, we aren't under FCC rules so we can play and say whatever the hell we like without any fines imposed on us.  then there are sites like myspace, soundclick in which you can get your music heard around the world ...finally there are people like me who review local bands 2 to 3 nights a week even though it's free publicity for the bands reviewed but they love it that someone's taking notice of their music and shows.

the recording industry is taking notice because it's the fans are telling local stations what should be played not the other way around ...and they are really taking notice because many of them are here in town for MOBFest (a 3-day music industry event with seminars and local shows around town) ...i met last night reps from Virgin records and RCA who were checking out a couple of bands.

I am a strange person - I demand that music I listen to actually have a "melody" - (remember when music had melody?) and if it's a vocal, I need to be able to understand the words. Unfortunately, in todays world, (with an occasional exeption) about the only music left that meets that criteria is Country/Western, and even more and more of that is on a downhill spiral when it comes to melody and understandability. To listen to a bad tune, with purposely distorted instrumental sounds and singers with their mouthes full of marbles is painful to my ears. It's no wonder I don't buy much music on CD, from Walmart or anywhere else. I'm hoping I'm still around when music makes a comeback.

With exeption of when I am in my car, I don't listen to the radio much. (unless I am online, then I listen Live365.com. ) I hate most radio stations because they play the same regurgitated crap that most of the other stations play.  As for buying cds, That is when I have the $$ I go to this site: www.cdbaby.com it is an independent cd site, that also has sounds clips.   Ocassionally I will spend alittle time at Borders or Barnes and Noble to see if they have anything worthwhile, though usually only in the bluegrass/folk/ska/ or just plain oddball music.  I am all for artists who decide to go their own way in the music industry.

You will not be around to see 'music' make a comeback; it never will, as long as the suits control the record, cd industry, count on it. MONEY is all there is, it is GOD. just accept it; from now on, there will be more of what you have now, only it will get so very bad, that you'll think what we have now will sound like high art.

He's supposed to have a new album comming out soon.

i don't listen to mainstream radio anymore - it's only net radio and whatever bands send me via the station.  Chicago has a great independent music base with many of our local bands touring the nation and Europe too.
