Yesterday some (half a tester pot of) scarlet water-based emulsion paint spilled on the cream carpet in the spare room of where we rent. It has not been allowed to dry out. The paint has been removed.

However the stain hasn't! We now have a lovely salmon-coloured mark about the size of my palm in a rather obvious area of the carpet.

I have used:

Detergent and hot water
Vanish Power Foam for Carpets

I have followed all directions, dabbing not scrubbing, working from the outside in. The problem appears to be that the pigment from the paint has been absorbed by the carpet fibres, rather than the paint itself still remaining. I am loathe to try bleach as there is no area of the carpet I would be comfortable doing a colour-fast test on.

The carpet covers the whole floor (with some very heavy furniture on it!) so putting it in a washing machine etc is not applicable. I do not have a wet'n'dry vac. At this moment in time, buying a new carpet is not something we can contemplate.

A steam cleaner might work. You can rent them and they are fairly inexpensive.

Try a painter's hand cleaner such as Beeline to remove stains with plenty of water.

Depending on the pile of your carpet you can also try aluminium oxide paper (sandpaper) to break up the paint stain along with the hand cleaner and then rinse out with plenty of water afterwards.

I've been pretty impressed by the line of OxyClean products on pet stains, never had a paint stain though sorry.

i've always used hydrogyn peroxide on all types of stains and it removed everything but mustard...

it doesn't bleach out the area; pour some on the area till soaked, then blot off with a paper towel till dry.

i've also found that oxyclean now makes an incredible carpet cleaning foam that works with many stains...

however, if i were you and i had the peroxide on hand, i'd try that first before purchasing any other products.

also, most items these days come with an 800 number on the label that you can call; so it's worth the time to ask the manufacturer of the paint product their recommendations; worked for me when i couldn't get the frenches mustard out of the baby blue carpet i had in my living room

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's offered advice on this. I rummaged through my cupboards for a while, looking to see if we had any peroxide (none there, but it was worth a shot) when I came across some Dylon Colour-Run Remover. Figured it was worth a go, as it is supposed to soak for at least an hour, so I put it on the stain whilst I ran to the shops to see if there was a UK equivalent of Didi7 or Beeline. I couldn't find anything, but then I live in a very small town.

Came home to find the stain is almost non-existent, so with a little rubbing and sponging off, I think I can convince my landlady that this can be considered 'normal wear and tear', given I have lived here for six years with no change of carpets.

Trouble is, I now have one extremely clean patch of carpet that is putting the rest of the room to shame - looks like I will be hiring that steam cleaner in a couple of months or so after all!
