Essentially the difference is this:

Judging: "That's not right for me."
Being judgmental: "That's not right for anyone."

There are many more things that aren't right for me than aren't right for anyone.  There are a few things I don't think are right for anyone (murder, you can fill in the blanks), but judgmental people think there are many more.  Gay marriage is a good example.  Fuck, gay marriage obviously isn't for me, but I won't go ahead and say that means it's wrong for all human beings.

i like this definition best.  i am not sure why judgmental has to necessarily include harshness unless the point of being judgemental is to "make that person change"  Even if you hate what they do, can't you still be judgemental yet retain some measure of control?  If not then isn't that what essentially leads to fights, arguments, wars, etc? i may feel very judgemental about the KKK, but that doesn't mean i have to try and change them, confron them, etc.... but i definately would steer clear of them and not associate with them.  On another note, i would feel very judgmental about certain elements of society who prey on the smaller elements of society, while i  might not go bounty hunting every one of them, if i met one or knew of one who was putting someone in danger, i would be very harsh and intrusive. Just my thoughts.  i reserve the right to change my mind lol.

Judgement to me is a bit like discrimination...

The difference between judgement and being judgemental?

If someone makes a favourable judgement about you which you don't agree with (and which you find unfair) you call that flattery or praise.

If someone makes a favourable judgement about you which you agree with and which you find fair you call that agreement or acceptance.

If someone makes an unfavourable judgement about you which you agree with then they are 'telling the truth' or 'telling it like it is'.

If someone makes an unfavourable judgement about you which you disgaree with and feel is unfair then they are being judgemental.

We all make judgments all the time. It is a perfectly normal and natural part of being human. We couldn’t get along in life if we didn’t make judgments. We make judgments about wether or not to trust somebody, hire somebody, work for somebody, go out with somebody, etc. The important question there is: are the judgments we are making sound and fair?

Judgmental, on the other hand, is what someone else is when they have made a judgment about you that you don’t like. Of course, that’s a judgment too.

Isn't it judgmental to tell another person their being judgmental?

Yes, but we live with paradoxes like that all the time.  I'm intolerant of intolerance, for example.  There's a difference between judgment and meta-judgment (i.e. judgment about judgment).

Judgment is part of life. We are brought up by our parents to judge right and wrong and many people inherit those ideas from their parents. Which is why racism and such things still exists. The fact is we have to make judgments about people. They don't have to necessarily be bad ones. Judging people based on good qualities is how you make friends  lol

No, it's always the other person who's judgmental.  You know, It's kind of like the difference between me being laid back and other people being lazy.

Just a quick thank you to everyone who's replied. I'm not a big semantics person, which is why I haven't really replied to the whole "being judgmental" versus "judging" thing. Personally speaking, when I post an opinion, I'm certainly not trying to ram my viewpoint down anyone's throat, and I would hope most others don't come into it with that intention either, but there are probably some who do. It's just the whole "don't judge people" or "don't be so judgmental thing" that gets me, no matter who it's directed to, simply because I feel it's a part of human nature to do so. So again, thanks for the fodder and viewpoints....

Perhaps it is like the difference between art and pornography, it is hard to define the difference between being judgmental and judging, but you know it when you see it? Just more fodder

i agree that it is human nature and that we judge people all the time.  If you make a judgment about me and i make one about you, aren't we both being judgmental,  regardless of whether it is a good judgment or a bad judgment?  The term can be both used as both a positive and a negative.  "You used good judgment" or "You judgmental bitch".  One obviously works better than the other.

Thanks for the thread.

I have no judgment on judgmentalism other than the fact that I hate to see people put an extra "e" in the word where it doesn't belong :)

You know, I was taught that it was improper to put an "e" in judgment too, but it is listed in the dictionary both ways... to my chagrin http://www.answers.com/topic/judgment?cat=biz-fin

I work very hard to be judgemental.  I judge all sorts of behaviors as bad, beating up your wife, molesting children, even petty power trips or vendettas.  While I believe a great many things in bdsm are great there are things that I consider "bad" on various levels and I have no problem not only being judgemental but acting on those judgements.

Really?  Wow.  That must be one of the new morphs of a word that the dictionary incorporated.  As I recall, MS Word puts its little red squiggly line under "judgement" it to identify it as misspelled (I don't have Word on this particular computer yet so I can't check!).  I've checked its spelling years ago and only saw it without the "e."

Oh well.  I'll keep spelling it the way I always have, and will probably keep cringing when I see the "e"

I have always used the E and was taught that both forms are acceptable.

It's much easier to take than people mixing up "accept" and "except."

Avoiding the crocs is using judgment, labeling the crocs as morally bankrupt is being judgmental... clear as mud?

Ah yes, but sometimes just making a judgment about whether or not they are indeed crocs is enough to piss them off and make them want to eat you alive.

The thing is, it is best not to piss off crocs while they are close enough to eat you, again this is using judgment... and this is kinda a fun way to spend time before I have to rush off to work
