OK....first of all....Domiguy, don't bother insulting me for being a redneck

. I've heard it all and I can laugh right along with the jokes. Besides, NASCAR isn't just a redneck sport anymore. Anyway, I always see the NFL thread and I keep wishing there was a spot for us NASCAR fans to discuss our sport. (It should be noted here that Master debates whether stock car racing is a "sport." He says "drive fast, turn left. Where's the sport in that?"

) But.....He is starting to get interested just as I am learning about football so I can at least understand what's going on when we watch or He talks about it. Soooooo....if there are any other NASCAR fans here, please feel free to jump in and discuss. I look forward to it.

To start off, I guess I should say "my driver" (and we all have at least one) is Dale Jr. It's sad what happened with DEI but now that he's with Hendrick maybe he'll start to show just what a helluva driver he really is and do his Daddy proud (yes non-NASCAR fans, to some of us Dale Earnhardt is indeed a saint

). Anyway......anyone care to chime in with your favorites?

Dale has shown he can drive like daddy did. And i'm glad he's chosen to make the break. he's got alot going on for himself and needed to sprout those wings. Though most of us loved daddy.... JR needs his own. And he's going to make it all his own. He's coming out from under daddy's shadow... and feeling his angel watching over him and guiding him.

I've been into nascar many a years... do my best not to miss a race when it comes home to NC. Jimmy Johnson is fast becoming one of many drivers I keep an eye out on. But with Earnhart Sr gone.... I still keep my eye on Jarret. He's been a family favorite too many years not... so faithful we are to him... But he seriously needs to get his head outta his ass and start driving again!!!

Thanks for being the first to answer! I have been a fan since about 1995 and Earnhardt was always my favorite. Once he was gone, I stopped watching really for quite awhile but couldn't resist coming back around to watch Jr. and support him. It's been really sad to see him have such a losing streak. Now that he's on the Hendrick team, I expect to see major changes!

Dale Jarratt was always fun to support. Like his dad, I think he's a really nice guy. As you said though, he sure hasn't done much lately. I also used to really like Mark Martin as well. It's harder for me to really find many of the "new," "young" guys that I can really support. I'm still deciding....lol....Master has chosen Tony Stewart as His driver. I have to say, I do love his fiery spirit. Kinda reminds you more of the old-style drivers who weren't afraid to cuss and fight. These days, however, that can't really go on without huge fines so they're really controlled and stifled. Makes ya long for the good old days where things were more real but it's still fun to watch.............luci

I would agree that while watching people drive fast and turn left is about as engaging as watching a riviting game of darts, I think it's still valid to call it a sport. Drivers today have to be in excellent physical consition to deal with the stress of racing and fighting physics for several hours in what is essentially an oven on wheels.

That doesn't make it any less boring, though.

Granted , you often have to sit through lots of tedious laps to see something thrilling like when they run 3 wide and start banging into each other but, to me, it's worth it. Seeing a race live is like nothing else either. When they start those engines, you can feel the rumble inside you. I got the opportunity to see Earnhardt race at Bristol and I'll never forget the thrill. I've practically fallen asleep at football games, though. Different strokes for different fans, of course

I think there is a trade-off between being there and getting all the senses involved vs staying at home and enjoying the competition.

When I've gone to see races I've never been able to keep track of what the placings were after a few laps and the field gets strung out. I go to road tracks like Watkins Glen mainly to camp out, drink beer and see cars flying by; bicycle races are the same except it is more like a quiet parade. I've gone to see oval racing and that easier to see and follow all the action, but that is just too boring.

But since I only get a view of one section of the track I've got no clue when folks drop out or attack. So it is fun, but I actually enjoy the racing more when I watch from home because there are multiple cameras covering everything and cold beers and the bathroom are just a few steps away.

I have a few favorite drivers I have to admit. I like Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson, Tony Stewart, and Dale Jr, now that he is with Hendrick...two of the four raced on a track where I am from for many years. I can't sit through a whole race on tv, but I try to catch the last 40 laps or so. Going is totally different, I love the atmosphere, the noise, and making fun of the drunk rednecks (I come from a long line of rednecks

, just not drunk ones).

Two of my drivers are having a heck of a year, and I look forward to one of them winning the championship again.

Exactly! It's a totally different experience being there with all the other fans. It's fun but not exactly the best way to really see all the action on the track.

Great point....all the action and none of the crowds and hassle. Plus, you get to hear the drivers/crew chiefs talking via radio and really keep up on what's happening. I much prefer watching on TV but it was a blast to actually get to see it in person as well......luci

LOL....yeah me too but I have to admit a few in my line were drunks. As far as Jeff Gordon, I really like him these days. It took me a long time to get to that point though

. Years back when I saw him as real competition of Earnhardt's, I really loved to hate him. (During that race I mentioned that I got to go see at Bristol, Gordon crashed right in front of us and I took pix I was so glad...lol). But, with Earnhardt gone and Jeff having really earned his place in the record books, I have a newfound respect for him. People have always denigrated him saying he's effeminate and gay. Not so, but whatever. He sure left all those macho "straight" drivers in the dust....lol....It's like Jeff Foxworthy says: Most NASCAR fans don't like Jeff Gordon because he enunciates

. Anyway, he's a helluva driver and I think a good person so these days I do support him...........luci

FYI Jeff Gordon fans:

NASCAR's four-time champion became a father Wednesday when his wife, model Ingrid Vandebosch, gave birth to a girl. Gordon announced on his Web site that Ella Sofia Gordon was born Wednesday morning.

Gordon had asked Mark Martin to be on standby this weekend in case he had to leave the race in Sonoma, Calif., to return for the birth. He said he'll travel to California later this week and participate in all on-track activities at Infineon Raceway.

Congrats to Jeff and Ingrid!.................luci

Sure thing...the other thread was before my time here on the forums but I did follow the link and go back and read it. Mostly just people insulting NASCAR....typical....lol. Just as rednecks are still the only group it's still politically correct and permissible to insult, NASCAR seems to be the sport most "worthy" of derision. Just a bunch of ignorant rednecks

....yeah, ignorant redneck millionaire drivers with model wives and tracks and fans in every state in the union these days.

Anyway, I'm with you on Tony Stewart and Jeff Burton but I really don't know that much about Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards. Congrats to Carl on winning last Sunday, though, huh? I always liked Jeff Burton's brother, Ward, really well too. It cracks me up how Ward has such a thick Southern drawl and Jeff doesn't really. Jeff said Ward's bedroom was in the southern end of the house

I've not gone to a race, but the reason I watch from home is about the same. You get the "god's eye view" at home. Only a few things but me about the broadcasts: when the network fixates on the first few positions (a lot of very interesting stuff goes on behind the leaders), and when idjits crash right after a restart. IMHO, they are numbnuts, trying to race hard on cold tires.

It would be cool to see the pits. I usedta work on my own cars, and was raised with racing (drag racing). My dad raced a (turbocharged) '63 Valiant station wagon when I was in high school. Boy, talk about a "sleeper" car!

Watching from the outside as I am not a NASCAR fan per se...

But I love watching all of the Earnhardt faithful taking gas that Junior is going to be Jeff Gordon's new wing man!
