I don't meditate nearly enough, but I still try to get a half hour in before I go to bed. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But like curiouslord says, it isn't all about being peaceful and calm. It can get quite frightening to be honest. But being able to quite the monkey mind is so rewarding.

I really like listening to podcasts from a guy called Micheal McAllister, he's at infinitesmile.org if anyone's interested.

BUMP!
Cause, I think this is an important topic, and don't want it to get lost in the shuffle.

i tried meditation years ago when i was fighting panic attacks daily.  it made them worse.  but i discovered headphones, with some loud old rock n roll assaulting my brain relaxes me and allows me to think and be calm.

i discussed this with my dr and he laughed and said whatever works for you.  i still use the headphones when lying in the sun, and i find it to be spiritual to me.

but to try to clear my thoughts and relax in silence-argh, i would go insane.

in those moments of solitude, does everyone sometimes think they are insane? or is it just me?

you're reaction is not typical. There are reasons why this happened to you, but given the fact you've managed to find a measure of peace and happiness with your headphones, I see no reason to comment and risk ruining what you have. your solution works, to a degree, for you. So, if you're happy with your headphones, I'ma gonna shut my mouth.

I suppose I'm like a lot of people in the sense that I cannot quiet my mind enough to meditate. The closest I've come to achieving it is when I'm trying to rid myself of hiccups, (my method ALWAYS works. :), but I suspect that's because I am focusing on one thing - controlling my breathing. But I'm still focused on something and not just letting go of all thoughts.

How does one do it?

In my initial post, I gave the complete procedure I have used, successfully, for the last 25 years.

Kind of funny you mention ADD, as my girl says she has an attention problem like that. I have been having her read a book on different meditation methods and she has been meditating now for about a month. Her stress levels are down, depression periods less, focus is better and she has less minor physical ailments.

I learned Tai Chi , some Yoga techniques and meditation about 8 years ago, so that I could avoid back surgery. Not only have I avoided back surgery, but those things along with just a little more exercise and slightly better diet, I am now in the same size close I was when I was 21. I truly believe in the balance of mind, body and spirit/emotions/whatever you want to call it. When one is out of balance it effects the other. It makes sense from a scientific point as well. I would have to do the research but certain hormones are released when in a deep meditation, the breathing exercises help keep stale air out of the lungs and helps keep the blood oxygenated, and a more positive, less stressful attitude helps boost the immune system.

The basic technique that I taught my girl, is the relaxed position sitting or laying down, closing the eyes, concentrate on the breathing and she listens to something basically rhythmic, such as the fan in the room.

For deep meditation I use a few different forms of Zen. For short meditation, I use breathing, a fan or candle flicker. Pursed lip breathing techniques can also help rid the lungs of stale air, and cause the body to release hormones that releave stress. There is a wealth of information out there, and trying many different ones to find the ones that fit yourself is usually what I recommend.
