Status: offline 		"These San Antonio Spurs will never compete with Bill Russell's Celtics. And perhaps they'll never equal the six championships won by Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls. As dynasties go, they are better than Shaquille O'Neal's Lakers, who won three in a row, though still less than the Magic Johnson teams, which won five. 
It doesn't really matter how bad their opponents look, either, how they can render even the prettiest offenses pretty ugly. It says here that Tim Duncan's San Antonio Spurs — who last night won their fourth championship in nine years — have now posted the third best run in NBA history.

"A dynasty is identified by a dominant team's dominant player. This one began in 1999, when Duncan — then a 23-year-old not far removed from his boyhood in St Croix — won his first Finals MVP. A team deserves to be judged in the context of its era. Hence, a comparison between, say, Larry Bird's 1984 Celtics and Duncan's 2007 Spurs makes for little more than a spirited debate at the bar. All that can be proven is this: Bird has three rings, Duncan has four."

Status: offline 		What is truly unique about the Spurs in this day and age is that the team works cohesively for the greatest benefit of the team. We have seen amazing teams over the last 30 years.  The Celtics, Lakers, Pistons, Bulls, Rockets and the Spurs. 

I wouldn't compare any of these teams to the other. Each has their own distinct personality and flavor.  The thing about the Spurs is that of the 4 major championship team sports in the US, the Spurs have won the most championships in the last decade.

I love my Spurs and am very happy that they were able to win another championship.  i believe that the overall goal of this team is to work together with little ego and great reward.  It is a winning recipe led by Pop, Timmy, Tony and Manu with the best bench possibly in the history of the game.  Robert Horry has been one of my favorite players since he came into the league from Alabama.  His 7 championship rings equal that of the greatest Celtics players and he managed to do this with 3 different teams.  I hope he sticks around to get the 8th ring.

Status: offline 		I'm a big fan of Horry, too. Being a die-hard Rockets fan, he gave me some great memories.
 
You're dead-on about the Spurs and their teamwork, fts.
 
The Cavs, on the other hand, were one of the worst finals teams to rear their head in a long time lol.

I totally agree with you about the Cavs.  I know that they will improve and hopefully do better on their next trip.  I was impressed by the composure of Daniel Gibson.  I loved him at UT and think he is an exceptional player with a great future ahead of him.

Thanks for starting this thread - I appreciate  a good discussion about basketball.

Status: offline 		When the Spurs played the Suns, that was the dirtiest players I have ever seen.  The one guy who clotheslined Steve Nash should have been fined and  omitted from the rest of the games. 

The way they should have presented the trophy to them was to shove it up their ass!

Regarding the big 4 sports, viewership is sinking in all except football, I think.

The rating is the percentage watching a telecast among all homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned in to a broadcast among those households with televisions on at the time. A ratings point represents 1,114,000 households"

Pretty funny coming from the team that poked Manu in the eye, and had Raja Bell once take a sucker punch at Kobe Bryant.

As a Spurs fan, playing the Suns is a joy. The games are fun and you can always count on the Suns to start making excuses for losing, and find a way. Funny how those excuses never seem to be:

An "MVP" that can't guard a stone statue ...
A "Sixth Man of the Year" that shot ten-percent in the series ...
A superstar big man that once dribbled a ball off his foot, leading to the only assist of his career ...
A coach that plays the starters, far too many minutes ...
Getting hammered on the boards ...

See you next year Suns fans ... for more of the same.

Because the Spurs competed with Shaquille O'Neal's Lakers, and were bounced out of the playoffs three years in a row.  In fact, in 2001 and 2002, they were knocked out by those selfsame Lakers.  So how the fuck are the Spurs a "better dynasty"?

The player who did that is Robert Horry and he is now the player in the league who has the most NBA championship rings.  He didn't clothesline Nash, it was a body check with and elbow that sent Nash sprawling.  Horry has 7 championship rings.  2 from Houston, 3 from the Lakers, and 2 with the Spurs.  He is the only player in NBA history to have more than one ring from 3 teams.  He has been an integral part of each of these teams victories.  7 of the last 13 years champions have done so with the help of the excellent play of Big Shot Rob.

Don't make me sob in my wheaties ( with the Spurs on the front) thinking about such a team!

As to your comment about the Pistons -  yes, in terms of teams who played like they mean it - the 89 Pistons were by far the most physical team to play the sport, but remember they reintroduced the league to defense from 88 on.  It took the other teams a while to catch up to them, but now they all have to play some level of defense.

The Spurs used to be the nicest team in the league.  Truly, led by David Robinson, they were an amazing example of good sportsmanship and fair play.  And then one night they played the Jazz, and Karl Malone elbowed David Robinson in the face and knocked him out cold.  Since then, Pop has changed the attitude of the team and we give as good as we get from others.

In 2001, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli were not yet part of the team.
In 2002, Parker was on the team as a rookie, but Ginobli was not.
 
While I really don't care much about dynasty talk, I do think the Spurs will probably win a few more and remove all doubt. Parker and Ginobli are young and Duncan keeps himself in good condition ... he will probably play for many more years.

I'm sure you will remember when the Spurs won in 1999, that Tim Duncan had already taken the leadership/star role from David Robinson.  That was the strike shortened season as well.  So Tim Duncan is still the star of the team, however, his supporting players have changed and evolved.  The Spurs have formed a cohesive, tight knit group that encourages players of Michael Finley's quality to come play.  Oh and win.

Status: offline 		I'm saying that you can't have it both ways.  If you say they were essentially the same team, then you have to admit that they repeatedly got their asses kicked by Shaquille's Lakers, so they can't possibly be considered a "better dynasty" (in the words of the article).  Or, if you take the other tack and say that the early years don't count because Parker and Ginobili weren't on the team yet, then you can't call the team a dynasty at all.

I think the whole "dynasty" thing is pretty arbitrary, but I can't call a team a dynasty if it was missing two out its current top three stars just a few years ago.  Take the 1996-2000 Yankees: THAT was a dynasty.  But if the Yankees were to win the World Series this year, I wouldn't consider them part of the same dynasty, even though they still have a few of the same players.
