I am thinking of planting these in a planter box, in petaluma, for my boyfriend, the only information I found on it, is they like nuetral soil and full sun to some sun. Anybody else know anything about these kinds of plants? How deeply do you need to plant bulbs in flower boxes? Get the bulb packet, and read to see how deep and wide the roots need to go. They can intersperse their roots, but not too much or they become rootbound and they dont put out as many flowers. You want a pot that will not constrict the roots. Sinergy

take a look at the Sunset Western Garden book, it should answer all your flower garden questions. I think you can usually find one at the library if you don't want to buy it.

I don't know that clematis would be a good choice for a box planter. They do like full sun but they like to have their roots well shaded. They do well planted at the base of a pole, trellis or porch where they can climb....they reach heights of 6 or more feet. As i said though, they like their roots to be well shaded with something like Hostas.

I think we've dcided on petunia's. they're gorgious, some really nice colors, and they come in plantar hanging pots, and should do well in boxes. they like strong sun too.

Over here in Ohio, you'd need a big enough container so that the plant can go dormant over the winter. Are clematis a perrenial where you are? Edging Lobelia is a great container plant. It has a spready, trailing habit, with little bright blue flowers. Sweet Alyssum is incredibly easy to grow, low maintenance, and smells wonderful. Tuberous begonias are bright and tropical-looking, but they like at least partial shade. Most flowers that can be grown in beds or borders can be grown in containers. They just need more watering. I like to custom create my containers differently each season, so I'm more partial to annuals. Cosmos and Zinnias are really pretty mixed together in a pot.

Stella, he's in Petaluma, California. His trailer gets full sun by the doors in the morning and shade in the afternoon's which is great, because petunia's love that kind of deal, I found a giant gorgious hanging pot petunia at Walmart. I bought it for him and he took it home yesterday:D
