KILLED FOR LOVING THE WRONG MAN

By Claire Marshall, BBC News

Banaz Mahmod was killed after falling in love with a man her family did not want her to marry.

Her father Mahmod Mahmod, 52, and uncle Ari Mahmod, 50, from Mitcham, London, were convicted of murder on Monday.

Banaz Mahmod was 20 years old, and very much in love, when she was strangled with a bootlace and her body stuffed into a suitcase.

According to the prosecution, Banaz had to pay the "ultimate price" for bringing shame on her Kurdish family.

The court heard that Banaz was murdered at her home in Mitcham in Surrey in January last year.

Four months later, the suitcase containing her body was found buried more than 100 miles (160 km) away, deep beneath the foundations of a house in a Birmingham suburb.

Having left an arranged and unhappy marriage, Banaz had started a relationship with Rhamat Sulemani.

Phone footage

Mr Sulemani, 29, broke down in tears when giving testimony at the trial. He said they had been threatened with death if they carried on seeing each other.

Shown in court was mobile phone footage he had taken of Banaz when she was lying covered in blood in a hospital bed, in what the prosecution alleges was an earlier attempt to murder her.

In the grainy recording, she says how fearful she is that father and uncle may be trying to kill her.

The court heard that her father, Mahmod Mahmod and her uncle, Ari Mahmod recruited young men from the Kurdish community to carry out the murder.

According to Victor Temple QC, the family's well-being and standing was at stake. There would be a loss of prestige unless the community saw that they had acted according to the old customs.

Banaz's sister, Bekhal Mahmod, gave evidence in court that their father had also beaten, threatened and called her a whore for becoming too Westernised.

Her uncle had said that she deserved to be "turned to ashes".

Testifying from behind a screen at the Old Bailey, Ms Mahmod said, "I escaped what my sister went through, that's why she's not here".

Jasvinder Sanghera, who runs the Karma Nirvana refuge in Derby, says she is "hugely angry" that Banaz had not been properly assisted by the police when she had gone to them for help.

She called for police officers to be properly trained in matters of honour-based crime.

The Chief Investigating Officer in this case, Caroline Goode, told the BBC: "I do think that we are only scratching the surface of this. One of the difficulties is that these things aren't often reported.

"In Banaz's case, if her boyfriend hadn't reported it, we would never have known that she was missing".

Your comments and thoughts please.

Unfortunately these kinds of 'honor' killings are not confined to the Kurds.  As some of you know I am English, in fact I have only been in the States since December 2002.  Before that I worked for one of the Universities which had a large (what we refer to in England as 'Asian' population).  This would be those from India and Pakistan, such killings or kidnappings, imprisoning and beatings at the very least are not unknown.  You can also include Arabic populations in that kind of thing too.  Which was why we were not allowed to give any information on students who chose to 'disappear' when parents wanted them to be married off whilst in college.

Some in these cultures will applaud these actions, obviously from my viewpoint I do not.. to me it is particularly heinous to be killed by someone that you should be able to trust.

Can it be learned from and prevented in future in England?  Or in America if it ever applies here, which given that you must have such populations it must.  Probably all they can do is be vigilant and if similar circumstances arise remove that person to a place of safety immediately and that might be easier said than done.

“Whoso slayeth a believer of set purpose, his reward is Hell for ever. Allah is wroth against him and He hath cursed him and prepared for him an awful doom.” (An-Nisa’: 93)

Just throwing that one out there...

I think this has been brought up before, but I can give it a quick rehash if you'd like.

Mahmod eh ? Were they perhaps Arabs or some other type of foreigners ?

I have no problem with their way of life, just live it in their country. Everybody comes to the western civilisation expecting to etch out a little piece of back home, that they are going to continue as if they still lived in their native culture. Well then why the fuck did they come here ? (or England or whatever). If you don't want your kids westernized do not come to the west.

People who do that are of the lowest common denominator when it comes to the qualities we want in an immigrant. If they don't like our culture to the point of killing their own children they will never be loyal to our country(s).

Which brings us to ask why they came in the first place. Either money or they are a criminal or something.

Perhaps our decline into almost third world status is a good thing, then the only people here will be the ones who want to be here.

Even if the Mahmods came from a country where it is legal to kill your kids, why didn't they go back there and do it ? I have no problem with it, and would say "Well her Daddy told her". That is THEIR culture. But when they come they do not want our culture, they just want our money, or something.

There is a wealthy Mexican who's family lives in California, for safety reasons. He actually commutes to Mexico to oversee the business. Why ? Actually the guy pays his taxes here I guess and takes nothing from the government, so a few of them is OK. A few keeping their colture isn't all that bad, but the problem is that immigrants almost seem to want to take over. Change the language. Wait, I thought you wanted to be here because you like the way it is here ? Should we let you screw up this country like you did the one from whence you came ? That is national suicide, and the government of the US does it every day.

So go to Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Africa or whatever. Keep harems full of Women in chastity belts, perform clitendectomies on the virgins, eat monkeys, behead people for turning their car radio on, do whatever the hell you want to do. But do it THERE NOT HERE.

Our laws say the Mahmod brothers did wrong, so whack them. Execute them. They should have stayed in the hole from where they emerged where you can do things like that.

And last but not least, (for decency this last part could be edited out) if you want your kids to embrace the culture of the old country, stay in the fucking old country.
