The British have a very different policy, it's "don't be an asshole"...which means don't rape, molest, pressure, intimidate, anyone for anything.  That applies to gays and heterosexuals equally.

Considering how rampant rape is among the women in the army in Iraq, I really don't think a few men buttfucking each other is really going to be a fucking problem.

Besides, the ones most afraid of homosexuals in public are usually busy sucking cocks when nobody is looking anyway.

The Iraqi army women are raping men?  I may have to rethink my war stance.

Perhaps there is a silver lining here.

I've served with many U.S. troops when I was in the Canadian military. "Don't ask, don't tell", is suprising alive and well in the U.S. forces. I was amazed at how many actually actually "gay bash (verbally, at least)", and have hard line views of a negative nature regarding the matter. Being the most technologically advanced military in the world, they still have a stone-age opinion on the gay lifestyle. In the Canadian military, we consider it discrimination, and will take corrective disciplinary action against anyone who shows any form of bias against gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. For us, this is just not something "on the books", but I've seen careers ended over the issue, as we take human equality seriously. Each soldier MUST have "SHARP (Sexual Harassment and Racism Prevention)" training before or during basic training.

Actually every military solder/ airman/ sailor ect. in America is also forced to take a Sexual Harassment training, but it over looks the gay concept because of the whole "Don't ask, don't tell."

I'm not really sure what "serving openly" means.I've always assumed that don't ask-don't tell was meant for the recruiters.  As in  "it's none of your damn business who or how I fuck" - so,don't ask.

Nope. It is live in daily fear that you might be found out, and then harrassed.

The thing which keeps coming to my mind is that all the guidelines, laws, restrictions, whatever target gay people.

They give a long, endless list of reasons (morale, discomfort among the ranks, etc) why it is important to target gay people.

None of them really address the fact that the problems are the bigots, not the gay people.

In the theory of codependency, I believe this concpet is usually described as the 400 pound gorilla sitting on the dining room table that nobody wants to talk about.  Some people need to grow up and learn to stop picking on people they have issues with and get on with doing their job.

I imagine what is most worrisome to these bigots is the overwhelming sexual energy, which being keyed up in the adrenalin and testosterone of war, comes about.  It is one of those "You need to pass a law against this behavior to save me from myself" sorts of things   We can see how effective those are with Congress, major Religious Right figures, etc.
