I think he needs to apologize profusely and be fined for his comments about the Latino players. What he said pales in comparison to Don Imus's comments.

More on Sheffield:

ARLINGTON, Texas - Detroit Tigers star Gary Sheffield insists he meant “nothing derogatory” toward Latin players when he said Major League Baseball found it easier to “control them” than blacks.

Sheffield said he was surprised his comments in the current issue of GQ magazine created such a stir. The slugger said he merely answered a question about why there were so many Latin players, as opposed to blacks.

“What I called is that you’re going to see more black faces, but there ain’t no English going to be coming out. ... (It’s about) being able to tell (Latin players) what to do — being able to control them,” he told the magazine. “Where I’m from, you can’t control us.”

In expanding on his comment about control, Sheffield said Tuesday, “They have more to lose than we do. You can send them back across the island. You can’t send us back, we're already here."

Tigers catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who is from Puerto Rico, told reporters to “just leave the poor guy alone” when asked about Sheffield’s comments.

I don't have nearly the problem with Sheffield's comments as I did with Imus; for one thing, I believe Sheffield's explanation, whereas I think Imus was just trying to cover his ass.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Gary Sheffield (6/10/2007 9:00:18 AM)

Gary Sheffield is just another overpaid jackass who thinks he has something to say because people keep asking him questions.  Really, when did we decide to turn to baseball players for sociological insight?

On another note...anyone see the cap that Roger Clemens was wearing during the press conference after his game yesterday?  It wasn't a Yankee cap.  It was a cap for Mizuno athletic gear.  Why do these assholes think the highest ideal in life is to be a corporate shill?  For the $4.5 million a month that they're paying him, I think the Yankees should insist that he wear Yankee gear at the fucking press conferences.

Lam, on a related note, what do you think about the Astros (and now NY) letting him miss games on off days?

And on the "corporate shill" angle; there's a good column in ESPN the Mag about that, discussing whether Labron James will follow Michael Jordan's lead and ignore social issues, or be "socially responsible".

just about everything i have ever heard imus say was offensive to someone......he should have been gone long ago or left alone in the last matter....he is a shock jock after all....

as for his apology, an old sayin comes to mind "roll up the pants folks, its too late to save the shoes"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Gary Sheffield (6/10/2007 9:33:49 AM)

I don't need these blockheads to be "socially responsible" (I don't even trust them to understand the complexities of our social problems today); I just wonder what inspires someone like Roger Clemens, who has more money than God and all the baseball credibility anyone could ever ask for, to present himself at the press conference after his first start as a representative of Mizuno fucking athletic gear and not the New York Yankees.

I never liked the idea of letting him miss off games, and the issue is starting to get out of hand.  Randy Johnson has apparently demanded the same treatment.  Baseball is a team sport.  It's not chess.  Who won the World Series in 2001?  Not Randy Johnson.  It was the Arizona Diamondbacks.

I'm also surprised that all this meretriciousness doesn't annoy the fans more than it does.  I'm a Yankee fan, not a Mizuno athletic gear fan.  But Americans these days seem to think the worth of a man is measured by his income, so in their perverse mind this just makes Clemens a bigger man.

Level -> RE: Gary Sheffield (6/10/2007 9:43:59 AM)

I dislike the "family clause" too. But what about this: let's say agreeing to allow him that was the only way Houston could get him to sign on the dotted line. Was it worth it? The added excitment, and the trip to the World Series?

Lordandmaster -> RE: Gary Sheffield (6/10/2007 9:48:44 AM)

No, because having a team with 24 team-members and one hired gun with special privileges contradicts the nature of the game.  That's like asking whether it's worth bringing about world peace through violence.

And what's really disheartening is that if you polled the Houston Astros themselves, I bet all 24 of them would say it was a great idea.  I think it says a lot that most baseball players seem to think Roger Clemens represents the essence of the game.

I'm  not sure about the Astros' poll; I've been trying to find some of the comments a few of them had after he signed with your guys....

ST. LOUIS -- The visitors' clubhouse at Busch Stadium was again the setting when the Houston Astros learned of Roger Clemens' plans.

Last year, on May 31, they were in the very same clubhouse, preparing to play the Cardinals. This time, they had just lost to the Cardinals, and were packing up to move on to the next city.

Same setting, same reaction. No one was surprised when Clemens re-signed with the Astros last year, and no one was at all shocked that he's headed to the Yankees this time.

"There are two kinds of people," Lance Berkman said. "Those people who aren't surprised, and morons."

As soon as Andy Pettitte signed with the Yankees last December, Berkman said, Clemens was as good as gone.

And I remember one of the guys, maybe Berkman, maybe Oswalt, saying "Roger who?"....

Now, maybe this is just a bunch of hurt feelings over him leaving, but I have to wonder if some of it isn't bitterness over the family clause.

He could say the same thing about the Construction Industry too and he'd be right.
They were among the groups lobbying for that "Scamnesty" Bill.
It's not just in Baseball.
And, the last time I checked it's not against the law to "offend" someone.

Lotus, not much. I mean if you tell the truth what can "they" do?

It doesn't bother me, although I'm Mexican American.  The first thing that comes to mind is that I have more respect for the opinion of an eggplant than I do of any athlete. [;)]

I can name several atheletes (or former ones) with opinions worth hearing: Muhammed Ali, John Amaechi, Jim Bouton, Rick Wayne, Adonal Foyle, Warrick Dunn, Roger Staubach............

Level, you forgot Yogi Berra!

And Yogi Berra! [:D] Some might argue he's more on the eggplant side of things, though LOL.

Let's see, "whitey" would have to pay fines, take a suspension for awhile while he takes sensitivity training and culture study, then he'd have to apologize again.  And while doing this his background would be checked to make sure he wasn't part of a skinhead group.

I think the Latino populous should lean on him hard.  It doesn't matter if it was true or not, his comments were not appropriate as a professional.
