The LA Times also reports that the Sheriff's policy of releasing prisoners early has resulted in at least 17 individuals going free who ended up murdering people during the time they would have been in jail.  This guy is the worst of the worst.

Baca unfazed, denies any favoritism
L.A. County sheriff objects to claims that he was swayed by Paris Hilton's celebrity.
By STUART PEIFFER, Times Staff Writer
June 9, 2007

The sheriff who sprang Paris Hilton is no stranger to Hollywood. He has attended the Academy Awards and Golden Globes shows. He's golfed with actor Michael Douglas, given a concealed weapons permit to Ben Affleck, hired Lou Ferrigno as a reserve deputy, taken campaign contributions from Sylvester Stallone.

Serving as sheriff in Hollywood's home county makes the spotlight difficult to avoid. But Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca's involvement in Hilton's early release has some in his own department wondering whether he allows celebrity to interfere with justice.

"After this latest incident, outward appearances seem to be that the sheriff does lean toward favoritism of the rich and famous," said Steve Remige, president of the Assn. for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, the union that represents the department's nearly 9,000 sworn deputies.

...

This is not the first time that Baca's department has faced criticism for its handling of a high-profile case. Last year, a deputy who arrested actor Mel Gibson for drunk driving in Malibu was told to delete from the arrest report references to anti-Semitic comments the actor made after he was detained. Baca said he was not involved in the decision to edit that report.

In addition to Douglas, the sheriff has golfed with Dr. Gary Alter, a sex-change specialist featured on the television show "Dr. 90210." Baca has issued concealed weapon permits to actors Stallone and Affleck, among others. With his approval, the department is in discussions to produce five reality television shows.

Last year, Baca employed Ferrigno as a volunteer reserve.

"I don't cohort with celebrities. I don't publicly hang out in places where celebrities are," Baca said. "The only celebrity I've spent any great time with is [Michael Douglas] and you don't do anything on a golf course except concentrate on hitting a ball," Baca said.

Still, as a sheriff or police chief, "you have to be concerned about appearances," said Anthony Ribera, director of the International Institute of Criminal Justice Leadership at the University of San Francisco and chief of the San Francisco Police Department from 1992 to 1996.

...

Baca said he was not concerned about criticism he has faced across the country after Hilton's brief release. Nor is he worried about political fallout. The day Hilton was released, someone registered the website address http://www.recallbaca.com .

"This is not anything that bothers me," Baca said.

At a news conference, Baca reacted angrily to the suggestion that Hilton's celebrity had influenced him.

"I don't know Paris Hilton. I didn't know what Paris Hilton looked like until I saw her picture in the newspaper. Some of us have jobs that don't allow us to follow the latest sitcom," he said.

The Sheriff Department of California has become very political in recent years.  Orange County Sherrif Gates was head of Sherriff Association got State Law Makers to change the laws as to who could run for County Sheriff, some say now the only person who can run for Sheriff is the Sheriff or his hand picked successor.

Orange County Sheriff is also notied for his practices.  After being elected he allowed many friends and supports to become Reserve Deputies and allowed to carry concealed firearms.  One of these supports son and two friends were convicted of raping a girl and video taping it.  His would be successor is now in jail for corruption charges.  Another is now on trial for pulling his gun on two people on a golf course because they would not allow him to play through.  When the State and Sheriff finally agreed that the Reserve Deputies had to go through the training program, manyof them wanted to go, those who tried failed to even pass the enterence  test.  And the Sheriff himself is under investion for sexual harassement.

I hope the sheriff and his entire department come under a major investigation, this sticks of favortism and dirty money. Celebs DO get off easier than'regular' people and with what was reported it just proves it; unless you have money and are 'well known' then you won't get treated fair in that county. The American public is NOT stupid, we know that, 'ye who has the gold makes the rules.' People are getting tired of it; I hope the DA's office throws the book at Paris and the Sheriff's Department.

Who cares about 'appearances' I don't care, especially where celebs are concerned. They know the rules JUST like everyone else, yet they get treated with kitten gloves; take the gloves off and send the celebs a wake up call.

At first I was annoyed that the Sheriff took it upon himself to override the Judge and let her out for house arrest.  But I thought about it and I would not want to be responsible for the nightmare fiasco involved in something going wrong during the princess' time in the pokey either.  I guess if I were the Sheriff, and I could figure out a way to make her less my problem, I would probably give it a try too.

If he did not want the job, and it's associated risks, why did he run for office as Sheriff?

The judge sentences people, the sheriff carries out those sentences.

This is not rocket science.  Lee Baca took it upon himself to override a court order.  The reason he did so is
not relevant.  Not his call.  He should shut up and do his job or resign and go work somewhere else.

What's the big deal about concealed weapons permits?
As long as you have a clean record you can get one.

Nothing is wrong with the permit per se, popeye1250.

People tend to object to a sheriff's department that provides them to anybody who can pay the bribe, I mean fee, to get one.

This is not new, nor unique to any one county...the office of sheriff has always been purely political, and favoritism is one of the perks of being elected a constitutional officer who literally (in many cases) has no boss except the sheep... er, I mean people who elected him.

selfbnd411 -> RE: LA Sheriff Lee Baca: Servant of the Rich and Famous (6/9/2007 12:34:41 PM)

Not in LA you can't.  Basically the only people in LA who have CCW permits are politicians and the Sheriff's campaign contributors.  Regular citizens can't get one even if they can prove a credible threat.  It's entirely at the Sheriff's discretion.

I know its hard to believe, but sometimes people get elected who are not actually competant to do the job.  *gasp*  And sometimes they exercise bad judgment.

I know, there is nothing in the history of politics that could have possibly prepared us for such a possibility.

If he knows that he cannot do it, as the poster I quoted implied, then why doesnt he resign and let somebody
who knows what they are doing have the job.  Not that I expect him to do so.

I have resigned jobs I knew I could not do, but in my professional experience this is more the exception than the rule.

Looking for honor in politics is a sure route to disappointment.  Particularly in L.A.

I just wish that people were more concerned when it happens at a level that actually matters (like the Bush administration) and less inclined to spend days upon days discussing some air headed twit celebritard's fate.
