Dtesmoac -> So long and thanks for all the fish .... farewell to USA. (6/8/2007 3:27:16 PM)

OK ignoring all my contentious observations on the US !!

Two years is nearly up, from Monday onwards it is unlikely that I will again post due to travel commitments and departure form US.

Love the parks systems, found some good beers, variety of country sides, seasons, wildlife, scenery, small town honesty, local policing, low cost of living, facilities, ridiculous price of gas, space & empitiness, a lot of the people I've met (unfortunatley they didn't live near me ), cost of hotels, Borders Book Shops

Had difficulties with nationalism, inward looking aspects, humour, seriousness / earnestness, being seen at work culture, high cost of some foods, bread (yuk), ridiculous price of gas, spinning off road in ice storm, breaking into social groups / networks, understanding the politics and election system. THE BLOODY LAWYERS - everywhere, the medical system - bills keep comming, you pay and then months later you get checks back !!!!, facilities were good though, coffee, the local neighbourhod we moved into -

Thanks for the forum responses - even when I was rude about US - adversarial debate is always fun ! :) [:D]

Learnt lots, probably still ignorant of even more.

fairwell, so long and thanks for all the fish and feel sorry for the next nation we set up residence in !![;)]

Dtes

NB 300 million of you - quite a bit of variety there, love the washing lines with only one red white and blue table cloth hangning out to air.    [:)]

I hope the positives outweighed the negatives, Dt, and wish you well. And do check in wherever you end up!

Please try to remember us fondly, and if you ever get the chance, do drop in again. [:D]

You will certainly be missed, and I wish you the best of luck always.

Have a safe journey back.

I'm there this summer for a couple of weeks and passing through Texas so I might give caitlyn a scare. I like the place, though it feels somewhat surreal and I think that is because speaking the same language, I think one subconsciously expects culture and values to be similar but they aren't of course. I wonder if Americans feel the same the other way round.

Level - hope the positives outweighed the negatives, Dt, and wish you well. And do check in wherever you end up! You'll hear from me again at some point - all in all its been a lot harder than we thought but very worth while. I seem to remember 12 months ago I was going to buy you a beer in Texas -

caitlyn - Please try to remember us fondly, and if you ever get the chance, do drop in again. [:D]  You will certainly be missed, and I wish you the best of luck always. USA and UK are like siblings, so similar and so different and so ready to bicker over the details but underneath par of the same family !! Has been really good discussing (arguing points with you :) )

Lady Ellen Well thats all we need isnt it? Another bloody immigrant LOL! Safe journey home - at least I take it youre coming home? Be careful me lady you could bump into me "stunningingly attractive male with cross atlantic drawl ...... . with better half and sproglets running behind going behind but wheres the root beer.... lol"  The plans on where we will end up are still being debated but a period of time in blighty is the immediate plan......and probably what the family need.

MC - I'm there this summer for a couple of weeks and passing through Texas so I might give caitlyn a scare. I'd like to be a fly on the wall for that conversation, I bet after a few coronas you'd big thick as thieves (caitlyn thats a compliment). I've travelled through Amsterdam a few times recently but never stayed long enough to look around, if I do I'll drop you a line.
I like the place, though it feels somewhat surreal and I think that is because speaking the same language, I think one subconsciously expects culture and values to be similar but they aren't of course. Very true. When living abroad if you are feeling like shit then it's easy to blame the country rather than yourself, on the whiole it may not be my cup of tea and not "home" but it has been fun and a great adventure. The proposal for next location sent "her in doors apopleptic" so I could be spending even longer on planes in the near future. Perhaps I should have said yes to staying in the US
I wonder if Americans feel the same the other way round. I like to obtain their perspectives and will in the future always invite new people that move in close to us around and help them to figure out whats what....
I visited Texas a couple of times but havn't seen much of the South East, but that may change.

I once brewed a root beer with crystal malt that fermented out to about 8% alcohol.  Not quite as sweet as what you buy in the store, but simply lovely to drink over ice.

Hiccup.

Root beer - I can't stand the stuff, tastes like cough medicine and smells like cleaning fluid

But despite my best efforts to "protect" them from evil influence !!!!  two of the little ones love the stuff ............... yuk .

Out of the frying pan and into the fire, then.

All the best, Dtesmoac.

caitlyn -> RE: So long and thanks for all the fish .... farewell to USA. (6/9/2007 6:37:51 AM)

Summer in Texas, for someone from Northern Europe, is going to be hell on Earth. Talk about culture differences, I think once you live here a few years and your body gets used to it, you actually like the weather. I know I do. My family has lots of visitors from up North and Europe, and most of them plan trips to avoid the Texas summer.

You have mentioned a few times that you enjoy seeing new things and exploring new cultures. I think you will enjoy Texas. We are having a rainy summer, and the countryside is beautiful. You will find amazingly polite and nice people here, other than in Dallas, which is trying to make itself a Southern New York City. I would leave my political views at the border though, unless you have a hidden desire to be buried in the Lone Star State. [;)]

Drop me a line on the other side, when you are passin' thru'!
