MarkMinette -> Is There Really a Connection? (6/7/2007 5:42:59 PM)

I'm a member of 3 professional trade-related sites (all regarding my career, but cannot divulge this info). Although these people are very "trade smart", and offer invaluable information, their literary skills, to say the least, "suck". I've been on collarme for only a couple weeks, but I've noticed that most are very articulate. Coincidence? I really doubt it. Does an open mind coincide with brains? What do you think?

I don't know if it coincides with "brains".  But I think it may seem that way.  People in possession of an open mind are open to more things in life, their life expands to embrace the possibilities.  This is how smart people approach life.    [:)]

I don't know the answer, but I thought it was a really interesting question [:)]

Lockit -> RE: Is There Really a Connection? (6/7/2007 5:54:55 PM)

Of course we have the brains... we also have better toys!

WOOOOHOOOOOOOO... I just lost that friggin ice cream cone!  Curious I can handle...

Thank you, thank you, for the compliment, but most people who take the time to write in forums like this are self-selecting and articulate.  It's not a random sample of humanity.

Stick around for a while...read the forums and ask yourself that same question in about 6 months

If you've ever been on a professional site like the three I belong to....we have 16 exams, and 4 yrs to be  fully licensed. It's not easy. But these people (like doctors), cannot make a sentence. Read posts and see what the incidence is of illiteracy.

Faramir -> RE: Is There Really a Connection? (6/7/2007 7:03:45 PM)

It's amazing how "likes what I like" = open mind.

There is only one clinical study I know of that looks at Sadomasochism and intelligence, The Mirich Study.  I was one of the participants, and no doubt I, with my 25lb brain, weighted the IQ average of the study up.  But since the population for the study was self-selecting, I'm not sure what the study says about SM participants in general--I think it says more about "kinksters who are willing to participate in studies."

There are some awfully intelligent people here, and there are some box-of-rocks motherfuckers here too.

Not the topic at hand, lol. These people can mostly spell and use correct grammer. Why is that?

juliaoceania -> RE: Is There Really a Connection? (6/7/2007 7:16:07 PM)

I think LaM has a point, people that contribute to forums self select when it comes to the ability to communicate in a written form. People that have trouble with written communication tend to find other hobbies and ways to communicate other than forums.

I second that!!!  LOL

[fast reply]

I suspect that folks on sites related to your profession may be more motivated to contribute as a form of self-promotion and networking. Furthermore, that aspect of it may keep others in line so they don't break the balls of the morons.

This place has a kind of Darwinism to it where the weak get eaten or run off. Some idiots stick around anyway out of sheer stubborness or because they are too dumb to acknowledge the ridicule.

So, your observations may be correct, but your explanation for it is bunk.

ProfJoe -> RE: Is There Really a Connection? (6/7/2007 7:40:30 PM)

After two hundred years of teaching people (ages 8-83) how to write, I've only noticed a correlation between writing ability and reading habits -- people who read a lot write with some degree of clarity. There are a fair number of boneheads who write very clearly, thus exposing the bone for all to see -- political pundits and music critics seem to enjoy this status disproportionately. There are also a fair number of very intelligent folk who can't write worth crap -- one of my chief sources of income for a number of years was in running in-service communications workshops for engineers, who are very bright folk but notoriously bad at writing ... or anything else that requires them to communicate with people. Interestingly, it's been my observation that people who are good at the visual arts (like painting, photography) are often better writers than people who are in music. I have no idea why that's true.

As a previous poster pointed out, people who post here don't mind typing, which probably means they've had practice at writing. They also have something to say, which probably means they read and, surprisingly, think to an extent. Since many of us think about BDSM it is likely our thoughts are outrageous and fun instead of mundane.

Apologies if that sounded pompous, but the OP pushed an old button!

Respectfully, Prof Joe

I am not at all inclined to believe the folks here are any more intelligent or open minded than any other group.

texancutie -> RE: Is There Really a Connection? (6/7/2007 7:55:52 PM)

I don't think that there is any connection.  You will find every type of person on a site like this, from the very articulate, to the feeble minded and mumbling,  and whatever is inbetween.  It's a mixed bag, whether it's the message boards, or the profile or chat sections.

I tend to agree with julia.

People who aren't articulate are probably not going to contribute as much, if at all, as those who write well.

But I don't think there's a connection between the lifestyle and being able to write well. Just like any other group of people, you're going to find those who can write, and those who can't. I don't think being open-minded has anything to do with it.

Joseff -> RE: Is There Really a Connection? (6/7/2007 8:14:16 PM)

I have seen the effect that the internet and modern education has had on the writing skills of the majority of people. I have also noticed the the people I meet in certain select lifestyles tend to be of above average intelligence. I'm fairly sure that this lifestyle, along with a few others, attract a higher intellect.

LadyEllen -> RE: Is There Really a Connection? (6/8/2007 3:32:41 AM)

I find that those lower down the socio economic strata are disproportionately unrepresented not only here but in real life bdsm and alternative lifestyle events. Since education is more likely to propel one up the socio economic strata, I conclude that in general, the bdsm and alternative lifestyle population must be better educated than the general population on average. In further anecdotal support of this, I find that most of those whom I come across in the lower strata in everyday life seem pretty much fixated on the more physical aspects of adult relationships, with little or no thought apparently given for the more psychological aspects.

Yes. I am an elitist.

Having said that though, it seems clear that we are a self selecting bunch of know-it-alls on these fora, and that participation can improve expression no end in that for most it takes only a few misunderstood posts for them to examine their style in order to avoid repeated misunderstanding and the resulting flames.

However, we do also have a number of regular contributors who struggle to express themselves clearly because of their circumstances. Elitist that I am, I sympathise fully with such people and reject entirely those who dismiss them for their sometimes problematic expression. Such contributions require additional attention, occasional interpretation and warm encouragement, for they are not so because of stupidity or laziness, but because of genuine difficulties which have no connection to education or intellect.

Aileen68 -> RE: Is There Really a Connection? (6/8/2007 3:56:18 AM)

I participate in another forum which is slightly different than this one and not bdsm related at all.  I've found that the literary skills of those other people far exceed this forum.  No offense folks.
