Bad news Jack, the GenCon in Anaheim last year was the last southern Cal one. The Indy show will still be happening every summer but the SoCal event was just losing too much money.

.....but isn't using a label just buying into the same paradigm that the 'knuckledraggers' you referred to are relying on?
Either as a 'denigrating label' or as a 'banner to rally others' it is still another way of saying 'us and them'......and 'us and them' has a nasty habit, historically, of turning into senseless discrimination.

I'll have to agree with you there, Philosophy!

Especially when discrimination turns into prejudice, repression and persecution.

Why does the word "repression" make me think of Monty Python's "The Holy Grail?"

I found this on another site, and thought I'd post it here to see what the response would be like.

quote:

You have no choice, no way out, my fellow nerds and geeks! It's either fight or die! It's either fight or die! We Must Fight! We Must Win! Nerd Power! Geek Power!"

Tee hee hee.

Yes, you must fight and of course you will die....It's just so hard to respect an enemy that can't throw a baseball and hits like a girl.

Do you have any idea how hard my students hit?

Eep.

All they need is a little encouragement to unleash their bilious vitriol against a man's testes.

I think it is because supreme executive power derives directly from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremoy.

Jack, the reason I got so good at chess was that while in the Navy we used to play it all the time. At sea and in port, almost every single day. When you play that much you can't help but get good at it! You learn a lot of defenses and moves.
I haven't played in years now but I'm sure I could get back in the swing of things if I wanted.
At the age of 50 I decided I wanted to learn how to play the violin. (how geeky is that?) I've always liked Irish music so I took lessons for two years, learned how to read music etc.
I like a good game of scrabble too.

Ahh... Ball sports.

My quarterbacks coach told me to "throw like a girl" to get the proper wrist action when throwing a proper forward pass.  If I remember correctly, the football team didn't think too highly of the baseball team... Something about running around a "diamond" instead of a grid-iron, wearing a cap instead of a helmet, etc.

On the other hand, Joe Rogan makes a good point about ball sports, in my most humble opinion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_BlX8PmTe0

It's a long clip at over 9 minutes, so if you wanna skip a bunch of stuff, skip to about 3 minutes 50 seconds of the clip.

Sports teams generally, in my experience, are filled with mindless cretins concerned only with patting each other on the butts and hanging out in the locker room.

I used to play football (soccer) and rugby.  The football team generally considered us a bunch of wussies, to which I generally responded that if they were so manly and tough they should play their silly game without huddling all the time to catch their breath after they ran 6 yards, and stop wearing all those wussy pads.

I quit wrestling my sophomore year in high school and started dancing Modern Dance.

The wrestling team questioned my sexuality.  Apparently, me rolling around on the floor with hotty women in leotards made me a homosexual.

My general response was that since they all roll around on the floor with each other, I assumed they were.

a bit more of a general response...

Arrrr, everyone knows TWUE nerds use RPL (Up with HP scientific calculators!)

Now, I'm a nerd by profession (electronics engineer) but I did martial arts once upon a time. Don't know chess worth beyond the moves, but like backgammon.  Since I'm a girl, I do throw like one.

as for a small reverse-troll re: being outbred, you've forgotten "regression toward the mean".  So-so folks'll have smart kids, uber-smarts will have kids more so-so.  Tend is towards the mean, which has increased over the years.  (Before folks write about the so-called "genius sperm bank", it was a crock.  Don't forget the enrichment a lot of those kids got.)

I wish I could play violin... The best I can do is strum a few chords on guitar...  Personally, I have much respect for people who know what they like and GO for it!

Also, I think that people who have the opportunity to train in chess the way you did become fearsome opponents and excellent mentors.

I know someone who is into Irish music as well.  You should come check out our "Nerd" message board at kuyaverse.proboards89.com.

Does U2 count as "Irish" music -- they are, after all, musicians from Ireland...

Wow.  I think I actually learned something new from that post.  A sincere Thank you, thornhappy.

(I think my brain just over-heated, so I'm gonna soak my head in some cold water now. )

Ya know...  No nerd thread is quite complete until a couple people start quoting Monty Python.

You are my people.
