LadyE, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your history lesson on the many languages of Britain. I wish I had known you when I was over there a year ago. Perhaps, next trip... I also thought your statement regarding the potential divide caused by too many languages in a homeland to be very astute. The overwhelming catering to the Spanish speakers in the USA has become a big bone of contention. Too often, no attempt to assimilate. But, 'tis true, we actually do not have an official language. Didn't they try to get a law passed on that? Just asking, in case anyone knows.
For Myself, I traveled to England last year. Since My mother and sister were traveling from another state, they took separate flights and we paid a bit more for a business class upgrade for them to ensure that Mom would be as comfortable as possible. From there she and My sister were upgraded to first class. Aparently the hovering attention was incredible. That was BA. I flew BA with My sister-in-law from Az, and it was no better than a Continental or America West flight. Packed in like sardines in the ever loving coach section, but we did, at least, get okay meals...long, long flight. Many years ago I flew Aer Lingus, and the flight was delightful. Good meals and anything I wanted to drink when I wanted it. Sounds like that airline has changed since those olden days.

Dusty - I'd be more than pleased to assist you should you return here!

The problem for Aer Lingus is that theyre up against Ryan Air, who are also trying to buy Aer Lingus out. Ryan Air is a very successful low fares airline (the first, I believe); maybe Aer Lingus are trying to compete in their playground, and is having to cut costs?

Lady Ellen,

I also want to thank you for the history lesson. It was very informative. English can be a very confusing language, case in point, your response to minnetar:

I can see someone unfamiliar with the English language scratching their head, as they try to figure out how in the world did the post manage to catch her eye. More so, did she seek medical attention.

True enough Dovie (and thanks by the way) - but then every language has idiomatic constructions that make no sense when read literally it seems.

More relevant is our lack of grammar, whereby a "man eating tiger" can be a ferocious striped beast tearing a man apart for dinner, or a man sitting down to dine on said ferocious striped beast! One just cant do that sort of thing in many languages, because the grammar wont let it happen!
