I always wondered how people can consider oral sex not a risk for STD's.  What do you think of this?

Oral sex can cause throat cancer

People who have had more than five oral-sex partners in their lifetime are 250% more likely to have throat cancer than those who do not have oral sex, a new study suggests.
The researchers believe this is because oral sex may transmit human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus implicated in the majority of cervical cancers.
The new findings should encourage people to consistently use condoms during oral sex as this could protect against HPV, the team says. Other experts say that the results provide more reason for men to receive the new HPV vaccine.
Maura Gillison at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, US, and colleagues collected blood and saliva samples from the throats of 100 patients diagnosed with cancers of the tonsils or back of the throat. The scientists also took samples from 200 healthy people for comparison.
By combining the blood and saliva samples with antibody molecules, Gillison's team could tell whether a person had ever had an HPV infection.
    Cancer traps
All of the study participants provided information about their sexual history, including the number of people with whom they had engaged in oral sex.
After controlling for other risk factors for throat cancer, such as drinking and smoking, the analysis revealed that people who had prior infection with HPV were 32 times as likely to have this cancer as those with no evidence of ever having the virus. And those who tested positive for a particularly aggressive strain of the virus, called HPV-16, were 58 times more likely to have throat cancer.
By comparison, either smoking or drinking increases the risk of such cancer by about threefold.
The throat cancers analysed in the new study mostly started in the "crypts" of the throat – the grooves at the base of the tonsils. This might be because the tonsil grooves trap infectious particles, suggests Mark Stoler of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, US, who was not involved in the study.
    High risk levels
The study also revealed a link between oral sex and throat cancer caused by HPV. People who had one to five oral-sex partners in their lifetime had approximately a doubled risk of throat cancer compared with those who never engaged in this activity - and those with more than five oral-sex partners had a 250% increased risk.
There was an even stronger link between oral sex and throat cancers clearly caused by HPV-16 (those tumours that tested positive for the strain). People with more than five oral sex partners had a 750% increased risk of these HPV-16-caused cancers.
"This study is important because it is putting all of the pieces together," says Gillison. "We need to add oral HPV infection to the list of risks for oral cancer," she adds.
    Virus vaccine
A vaccine against several of the most aggressive strains of HPV linked to cervical cancer received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in 2006. However the plan to vaccinate adolescent girls with this vaccine developed by Merck, called Gardasil, has received some criticism.
There have been no studies investigating whether the vaccine can also protect against throat cancer, but the new evidence linking HPV to throat cancer could lead to broader vaccination with Gardasil. "We will see a push for vaccination in men," says Stoler, who has been involved in the development of the vaccine.
Tonsil and throat cancers affect about two in every 100,000 adults in the US. The new results could promote the development of spit tests for HPV infection to help identify people at high risk for these cancers, researchers say.

Is there anyway to tell if one has had HPV after the fact?  Is it something that stays dormant in ones system?

I've always thought people who felt that they could have unprotected oral sex and be at no risk compared to unprotected penile penetration to be a lil clueless.

It is true that the risks are higher when the penis enters the vagina, but I think unprotected oral sex is dangerous. You can catch many STDs that way. I'd rather use protection.

There are tests, but they have to specifics.  Almost always it's caught AFTER there's a problem from it.

It's silly to think there is no risk with oral.  However, there is a much LOWER risk on a lot of levels.

As always, make an informed choice.

Mouths frequently have small tears in them. How often have you bitten your tongue or cheek? We don't even pay attention to this, it happens so frequently. But with all those microtears, of  course we should pay attention to transmission of blood borne diseases.

Interesting information. I agree, we should all take as much care as possible to protect ourselves, but we need to be aware that it is possible to become so afraid of dying that we end up unable to live fully. Manage the risks well and enjoy life while you have it.
Lost a good friend to aids some time back, one of his favourite sayings was "Remember, life is a sexually transmitted terminal condition, just for most of us its not as quick as aids."

Herpes can be transmitted Orally, as can HIV, and apparently now HPV.

Since HPV seems to be at issue here, I will remind people that there is now a vaccine against HPV.

I did some research recently, and it appears that almost all STD's can be transmitted orally, especially if there is any lesion or tear present. Diseases like chlamydia and HPV increase the risk of catching AIDS, and it appears HPV is now implicated in throat cancer. There's no such thing as safe sex, only safer sex. But you can't weigh up the risks unless you are aware what they are. I'm not ruling out oral sex, but I'm a lot more cautious about it these days. There are too many people out there who think being "clean" means taking a shower!

the hardest part in all of this, is unless a man has the HPV strains that cause genital warts, there is no test to determine if a man carries the virus. At least that was true the last time i spoke with my doctor about it (6 months ago).  And they usually won't test women until you have an abnormal pap - then they might do a DNA swab to see.  But, as far as i know there is still no simple way to test for it, so even if you ask a partner to be tested for STDs, HPV probably won't be included!

I can't understand why the HPV vaccine is only being offered for women.  If men can get and spread the disease shouldn't it be given to men too?
HPV also causes rectal cancer, btw.

The UnChristian right and the Republicans oppose providing the vaccine because they hope the fear of cancer will reduce promiscuity.

It still needs testing and approvals.

she is right, the drug is new and not proven to have no serious long term sideaffects yet.
you can get it if you like, but havingit mandatory would just not be right untill we know more about nay adverse reactions to said drug.
if i had a daughter i would not let her get that vaccine untill it was proven to be all that it is cracked up to be.

Well, of course the vaccine is only provided to women. This society is still mostly patriarchal and even the most educated still believe, to some degree, that anything involving a woman is her fault. The woman is expected to get this vaccination the same way she is expected to take birth control and carry condoms. I just watched a news report today on infertility and the vast majority of infertile couples are infertile because of the man, but the woman is always tested first. This is why the woman will be vaccinated and not the man ... it's her fault and her problem and no man could POSSIBLY be the cause of something like this.

I'm not sure how to quote, but SimplyMichael said the following and I'm just wondering where the problem is with trying to reduce promiscuity. Also, I wonder where he got the information on which he based the following:

The UnChristian right and the Republicans oppose providing the vaccine because they hope the fear of cancer will reduce promiscuity.

Atleast the Psychologists are still on our side... kinda.

    Crying Over Spilled Semen
Why women who don't use condoms feel happier.

    By:Tiffany Kary

The finding that women who do not use condoms during sex are less depressed and less likely to attempt suicide than are women who have sex with condoms and women who are not sexually active, leads one researcher to conclude that semen contains powerful—and potentially addictive—mood-altering chemicals.

Study author Gordon G. Gallup, Ph.D., a psychologist at the State University of New York in Albany, also found that women who routinely had intercourse without condoms became increasingly depressed as more time elapsed since their last sexual encounter. There was no such correlation for women whose partners regularly used condoms.

Gallup's survey of 293 college women also found that those who did not use condoms were most likely to initiate sex and to seek out new partners as soon as a relationship ended. "These women are more vulnerable to the rebound effect, which suggests that there is a chemical dependency," says Gallup.

Semen contains hormones including testosterone, estrogen, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and prostaglandins, and some of these are absorbed through the walls of the vagina and are known to elevate mood.

Gallup controlled for variables including method of contraception, frequency of sexual intercourse, as well as the women's perception of their relationship. He concedes that women who regularly have sex without condoms might share personality traits that make them less susceptible to depression. But the behavior most often associated with non-condom users is sexual risk-taking, and studies have found no correlation between high-risk sexual behavior and lower rates of depression.

Gallup's study, which he deems "the first serious attempt to investigate the effect of semen chemistry on women," titillated the public and rankled some academics upon publication in Archives of Sexual Behavior. Gallup says he has since replicated the findings with a sample of 700 women and will examine whether "semen withdrawal" places women at an increased risk for depression when they are premenstrual, menopausal or have just given birth, as many women abstain from sex during these periods.
