Oral sex can cause throat cancer

People who have had more than five oral-sex partners in their lifetime are 250% more likely to have throat cancer than those who do not have oral sex, a new study suggests.
The researchers believe this is because oral sex may transmit human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus implicated in the majority of cervical cancers.
The new findings should encourage people to consistently use condoms during oral sex as this could protect against HPV, the team says. Other experts say that the results provide more reason for men to receive the new HPV vaccine.
Maura Gillison at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, US, and colleagues collected blood and saliva samples from the throats of 100 patients diagnosed with cancers of the tonsils or back of the throat. The scientists also took samples from 200 healthy people for comparison.
By combining the blood and saliva samples with antibody molecules, Gillison's team could tell whether a person had ever had an HPV infection.
    Cancer traps
All of the study participants provided information about their sexual history, including the number of people with whom they had engaged in oral sex.
After controlling for other risk factors for throat cancer, such as drinking and smoking, the analysis revealed that people who had prior infection with HPV were 32 times as likely to have this cancer as those with no evidence of ever having the virus. And those who tested positive for a particularly aggressive strain of the virus, called HPV-16, were 58 times more likely to have throat cancer.
By comparison, either smoking or drinking increases the risk of such cancer by about threefold.
The throat cancers analysed in the new study mostly started in the "crypts" of the throat – the grooves at the base of the tonsils. This might be because the tonsil grooves trap infectious particles, suggests Mark Stoler of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, US, who was not involved in the study.
    High risk levels
The study also revealed a link between oral sex and throat cancer caused by HPV. People who had one to five oral-sex partners in their lifetime had approximately a doubled risk of throat cancer compared with those who never engaged in this activity - and those with more than five oral-sex partners had a 250% increased risk.
There was an even stronger link between oral sex and throat cancers clearly caused by HPV-16 (those tumours that tested positive for the strain). People with more than five oral sex partners had a 750% increased risk of these HPV-16-caused cancers.
"This study is important because it is putting all of the pieces together," says Gillison. "We need to add oral HPV infection to the list of risks for oral cancer," she adds.
    Virus vaccine
A vaccine against several of the most aggressive strains of HPV linked to cervical cancer received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in 2006. However the plan to vaccinate adolescent girls with this vaccine developed by Merck, called Gardasil, has received some criticism.
There have been no studies investigating whether the vaccine can also protect against throat cancer, but the new evidence linking HPV to throat cancer could lead to broader vaccination with Gardasil. "We will see a push for vaccination in men," says Stoler, who has been involved in the development of the vaccine.
Tonsil and throat cancers affect about two in every 100,000 adults in the US. The new results could promote the development of spit tests for HPV infection to help identify people at high risk for these cancers, researchers say.

HPV also causes rectal cancer, btw.

    goodgirl85 -> RE: Oral sex can cause ... (6/5/2007 8:49:35 AM)

You can google, or just listen to the news. A lot of parents as well, are hesitant about giving their child this drug and the new drug for chlamydia for fear of raised sexual behavior. I say a teen is going to have sex when he/she wants to with or without this new vaccine. So when I have kids, I will have them vaccinated because its just one more way to be safer. Parents should also be talking to kids about safe sex, and giving them the knowledge so they can take care of themselves properly.

I believe the only reason why women are the first to be approved for this new drug is because (if I am not mistaken and I may be) there are a lot of different strings or HPV and this one they have the drug for is the one that causes Cervical Cancer. Most women have at least a scare with cervixal cancer at some point in their life.  I am sure they will eventually have a universal one for everyone.

Does anyone know if the chlamdya one is just for girls or men to? The news report I saw only discussed why parents were concerned about giving their daughter the shot.

Everything we do, and everything we put into our systems is in some way not good for us. Did you know that they allow (and i forget the exact amounts) a certain amount of rat feces and so many hairs per 30 mg (again i believe) of peanut butter? And I am sure this goes for candy bars, and cheese, everything that goes thru a processing plant. So let me die from cancer that I got from giving head rather then all this second hand smoke I breathe in from my friends and family.

Sex is a great mood lifter in and of out itself. Its going to be hard to prove that condoms or not make a difference. And here's a question... Could it be that women who don't use condoms are on the rebound quicker because maybe the non use of condoms (however casual) maybe trigger a more intimate response in us than condom using women. After all a rebound is way to try to get the ex out of your system.

I think the study should also have to look into how casual the sex and how many women are in serious relationships.  Maybe women who have casual sex with more than one partner are more likely to use condoms then those in serious relationships.

    Just my thoughts and ideas.

    • I think you need to keep all this in perspective.

At the end of this article it says that throat and tonsil cancers affect 2 of every 100,000 adults in this country.

So, if people who have had more than 5 oral sex partners have a 250% increased risk of throat cancer, that means that of 100,000 such persons with more than 5 oral sex partners over their lives, that 5, instead of 2, of those 100,000 will get throat cancer.

For those with HPV-16, the most serious strain of HPV, the study says there is a  750% increased risk of throat cancer.  HORRORS!!!  But that means that of those with the HPV-16 virus and more than 5 oral sex partners, 15, instead of 2, of every 100,000 persons with HPV-16 will get throat cancer.  Conversely, it also means that 99,985 of those oral sex addicts with HPV-16 will not get throat cancer!

I don't think this "increased" risk is something to lose much sleep over.

I think any kind of sexual contacted there is a risk involved. I desired to find a Domme looking for a long-term relationship. I desire more than just a D/s relationship with her. I know that there might still be some risk involved. I do feel having several partners is a greater risk. I do feel that you need to protect yourself.

    • Well the charming young man from the health department who came to talk to my college sexuality class yesterday informed us that the risk of getting AIDs or HIV from oral sex is extremely small. In fact, there isn't a documented case that didn't involve very unusual circumtances (open sores in the mouth from, I believe, syphlis).

It is considered a low-risk sexual activity by today's textbooks, and athough you can get STDs like herpes in your throat it's not very likely.

So what are my risks if I've given oral sex to a couple hundred over my lifetime?  What if I rack up a total of 500?  I guess 500 would give me a 1.5% chance of throat cancer.  Maybe I'll be safer and limit it to 300.

I forget the exact age range, but i was reading a pamphlet at my doctors last week and the vaccine is available to women in their teens up til the early twenty range.... I have heard nothing about it being for only those who are not sexually active.

The Virus is pervasive and can live dormant in the human body for a long time before it manifests any type of symptoms. Vaccine is only effective if administered prior to the virus being introduced into the system. The population most likely to benefit from this type of vaccination are women that have never engaged in any type of sexual conduct that could have exposed them to transmition of the virus. Ergo, young women who have not yet become sexually active.
However, women in their early years of sexual exploration may still have a pretty good chance of benefitting from the vaccination, but as exposure increases (not only the number of partners the women have, but the number of partners/encounters their partners may have had) the probablitiy of exposure to the virus is greatly increased and the probability of the vaccination being effective correspondingly reduced. The targetted population is a best guess attempt at maximizing the use of the vaccination. I would be willing to bet that different doctors will adhere to slightly different standards and one insurance company may cover young women regardless of their self-admited level of sexual activity while another company may only cover persons that claim no sexual activity.
      Isn't science a wonderful thing?

Too many STD's can be transmitted orally.  Some people simply do not do enough research on the subject, or just don't care, or are just really stupid.  If in doubt, make sure condoms and dental dams are used at all times.  Please also remember, at times a kiss is not just a kiss.

I just had the 2nd of the 3 shot series of the HPV sequence.  Basically it's available for females age 9-26.  If you've been heavily sexually active, then the chances you haven't been exposed to the strains of HPV is smaller, that's why they ask that question when you go to get the shot.  If you're in the age range, though, and really want it, they won't tell you know.

One important thing that gets lost in the debate about the vaccine is the serious concern some in the medical field have that women who have vaccine will stop getting their annual pap smears done and thus the rates of cervical cancer not caused by the strains in the new vaccine will increase dramatically...

AquaticSub -> RE: Oral sex can cause ... (6/6/2007 7:14:03 AM)

You can get the vaccine at any age or sexual status.

The question is do you want to. We have yet to see the long-term effects.

Tuomas -> RE: Oral sex can cause ... (6/6/2007 7:24:31 AM)

The article is alarmist, and seems more focused on shoking people about the "risks of oral sex" instead of actually providing useful infomation. Also, the article clearly has an agenda.

There are all kinds of diseases that are transmitted through saliva and the gastrointestinal system (not to mention if you happen to have any kind of lacertation in your oral cavity). Consecuently, you should be careful of ANYthing you put in your mouth, and it's just common sense to make sure your partner doesn't have any kind of serious disease before you bump uglies.

But most people aren't out there performing oral sex on random people -justifying the 250% figure. Most people usually have relatively stable partners, and STDs are typically not an issue.

Now, if you are into the whole "one-night-stand" bar pick-ups where you don't even know the guy/gal's last name, then yeah; you probably should be concerned. But you probably should be concerned with a lot of other, more immediate problems as well...

      • Count me in on the side of being cautious but being rational and reasonable.

I get tested every 6 months.  Part of my responsibility for my job since I have worked with people who were HIV positive.  I haven't been what I would describe as promiscuous but even if I were, the chances are not much worse than getting cancer from drinking, smoking, environmental causes, hereditary factors.  We are all going to die of something.  I would rather die happy...while being reasonably safe and cautious...than die unhappy wondering what I could have enjoyed and gotten away with.

OMG That means (if my math is right) about 6000 cases among all Americans a year. Now consider how many die in auto accidents, etc. and this is hardly a major health risk. I also notice, at least from the article, that they did not take into account another MAJOR risk factor which is persons who suffer from nocturnal indigestion which allows stomach acid into the throat.

If you are going to worry about this sort of thing then perhaps you should simply envelope yourself in a plastic bubble, not eat any food (processing you know can kill) not walk (might fall) etc.

A few figures from recent studies:

About 8300 women across the U. S. die from falls each year...
        http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/womens-health/WO00014

About 5000 people die from drowning.  About 5300 people die from ACCIDENTAL poisoning.
        http://www.anxieties.com/flying-howsafe.php

Over 1000 people die each year from boating accidents.  (and before you get to thinking that the figure is not as high as what has been suggested in Brutal's figures above, consider that the number of people who engage in boating is a much lesser figure across the U. S. than those who engage in sexual activity.  Nor is boating anywhere near as frequent an activity)

As I said earlier...let me die happy while being reasonably safe and aware rather than huddled in a corner, afraid of even the most basic human activity.

A submissive woman I know was told by a pro domme who wanted to use her to attract customers that it was not possible for one woman to give an STD to another. The sub was a lot more attractive than the pro.

The sub wanted very much to try bi acts, and decided not to wait for her dominant male partner to bring her into a safe experience. The man realized he could not trust the sub so he released her.

Not only did the sub lose her Master, she also got the clap from the professional woman. After her course of antibiotics she also ended up being pimped to random men "to please her new Mistress" without being told these were financial transactions. She figured it out when some of the "dominant men" she was ordered to please tipped her.

I personally knew the master the pro and the sub and know this all is true.
