MsSonnetMarwood -> Best way to get paraffin wax out of a carpet? (6/1/2007 8:58:50 PM)

I was moving my paraffin bath a couple weeks ago, and accidentally sloshed some wax onto my wall to wall carpeting.

Any suggestions for the best way (that you've actually tried, please!) to get this out?

I've had luck layering a couple of pieces of paper toweling over the wax and carefully ironing the spot.  The paper towel will absorb the wax.  Replace the sheets often as you work on the stain.  Start with the iron on lower heat rather than high, as you can run the risk of melting your carpet.  Some people also use brown paper bags instead of paper towels.

I would use a hair dryer to melt it a bit and a putty knife to scrape it away (in an upwards motion.

I ice it, pick off the frozen wax then iron using a paper grocery bag to absorb the melting wax. Some waxes do leave a color stain behind, oxyclean products are pretty good for that. Just follow the directions.
Best of luck.

I've done this and it worked quite well. Make sure your iron is set on low so you don't melt your carpet.

Having worked as a carpet cleaner, we used the iron trick. We, however, used a damp rag instead of paper towels.

It should be noted that wax can bleach the color from your carpet.

Depends on your carpet, but I once used a steam iron with a brownpaper bag (which worked for me thanks to my mums recommendation). Just be careful and turn the heat up gradually.

I had the entire paraffin bath dump, in an apartment no less. Scraped up as much as possible when it was still liquid, then used newsprint and an iron set on low to melt and absorb as much as possible. In between sessions (I worked on the carpet for EVER) with it I would use a dog comb and work at the nap of the carpet, trying to bring it back to "fluffy", then vacuum up any wax that flaked off. Then back to the iron.

can use a hair dryer to get the same effect

Might I suggest a heat gun, I do not mean a hair dryer, and the hose of a running shop vac. Do it a little section at a time, heat it up, and watch it carefully and you'll see the wax flow, then you throw down with the vacuum.

This would take some time, just how big an area we talking here ?

And what kind of carpet ? If it is a synthetic nap, the wax should not soak in, if it's wool or something natural, you are probably in deep shit.

You might do as another poster suggested with the iron, but I would do that, and heat it alot and attempt to get it warm, as well as the floor, and then immediately go to the heat gun and shop vac.

Actually you may never restore that spot completely, there are many factors. It depends on the kind of carpet.

This always works for me:

Boil some water...(212 degrees).

Pour it into a cup (about 8 ounces).

Roll a doob.  Light.

Put tea bag into cup.

Call carpet guy.

(Very effective).
