LightHeartedMaam -> Deja vu (5/29/2007 12:03:40 PM)

I was watching a documentary on Hippies last weekend.  It brought back a lot of things I had forgotten.

They strive for a Utopian society free of government.

The decided marriage was outdated and everyone should just love everyone.

They didn’t believe in labels either and preferred to refer to each other simply as “human beings”.

They had their Mecca (i.e. San Francisco)

They LOVED doing anything in the nude.

Face painting was the rage.

Anything taboo was cool.  The more ‘out-there’, the better.

The desire to spirituality/non-conventional religions.

Then it hit me, where have I seen this recently? Right here (meaning the BDSM, M/s, D/s world)

To my fellow 99 year olds~ do you see the similarity?

LOL! Nope, you're the first one :)

I guess I just felt the need to give a hiswtory lesson. After all, these were the 20-30 somethings GRANDPARENTS!  Then I recalled the 50's "beatnicks"- very much like Goth is today.

Maybe this is why us "old timers" chuckle to ourselves when we see the new ones discovering this "lnew lifestyle" and thinking how their parents don't understand them.  Ohhh they do! More than they realize.

Bless their hearts :)

.....a couple of years back, while in my very late 30's i went back to college to get my degree. While there i was approached by a young student who said, "Hey, you're an old guy...ever heard of this band called...er....Led Zeppelin"

Led Zeppelin?  I think I heard something about them. It's so hard to remember the 70's.

You know what they say, if you remember the 60's, you weren't there :)

bliss1 -> RE: Deja vu (5/31/2007 1:46:46 PM)

The 60's - they came after the 70's right???

I should of kept my cloths from them - I could of saved a fortune in clothing with my teen age daughters.

Back then you guys were pretty groovy....But then you grew up and changed your mindset....Lost the ability ot think freely like a younger  person....Now too many of you Support a President and an unjust war....Have become pro-life...and all too often now detest the very same people that you once were or idolized, you watch Fox, curse the fact that you are aging and remember how good things were  when you were young.....Hypocrites.

MellowSir -> RE: Deja vu (5/31/2007 1:52:55 PM)

I've always believed there's nothing new under the sun, and all things come in cycles, tho I don't think disco will ever return thank god lol

I'm young so maybe I don't have the memory based experience to qualify a response but I am beginning to see in the high schools in my area a definate return to some of the basic beliefs of "hippies."  generally, young folk of my acquaintence (16-21 due to volunteer opportunities) seem to be politically liberal, intelligent, sexually open and accepting, and concerned about whether there will be a country left for them when their parents/government/ "grownups"  are done with it.  Most of them are disgusted with the religious junk they are being fed, discouraged by the useless laws on drugs and tired of being treated like less intelligent human beings.

I don't think its just the BDSM lifestyle, I think I personally see more and more disgust with the current order every day in the younger generation.  And that encourages me.  Hopefully they'll have their own sexual and political revolution and their voices can be heard.

Thank you OP for posting this.

One of my favorite quotes is :"If you want to know what lies on the road ahead, ask those coming back"

But they never do, they have to find it out for themselves.  Kind of like Dorothy in the Land of Oz

Unfortunately- those that came to maturity in the 80's  went back to the "establishment" becoming very materialistic.
We swapped "free thinking" for reality.  You'll find out on your own when you children call you a hypocrite.  Each generation blames the one be for.  We even  wrote a song about it:  http://www.lyricsfreak.com/m/mike+&+the+mechanics/the+living+years_20093565.html

Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door

I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid thats all we've got

You say you just didn't see it
He says its perfect sense
You just cant get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defense

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we didn't see eye to eye

So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
Its the bitterness that lasts

So don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in
You may just be o.k.

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we didn't see eye to eye

I wasn't there that morning
When my father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say

I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we didn't see eye to eye
