Whether you prefer Rush Limbaugh or Keith Olbermann has to do with your genes and your psychology, according to a new study.

People who are more conscientious and prefer order, structure and closure in their lives tend to be more conservative, whereas creative people who are open to new experiences tend to be more politically liberal, says John Jost, a psychologist at New York University who conducted an overview of previous studies involving a total of more than 22,000 participants from 12 countries.

But that psychological profile only pulls half the weight when it comes to determining people's politics, his review showed. The other half is genetic, as is revealed in studies of twins and their political bent, Jost says.

Politics in America

A number of sociologists have argued that political ideology died in America after World War II because both the left and the right wing were heavily discredited at the time.

Jost says the latest research shows the opposite, that politics in America today are very much alive. His previous research has suggested, for example, that more than 90 percent of college students can identify where their political beliefs fit on a scale running from the “left” (liberal) to the “right” (conservative), and that their affiliations strongly influence how they vote in elections.

Americans also appear to enjoy being involved in politics.

For instance, 44 percent of respondents to the 2004 National Election Study reported that they regularly listen to political talk radio.

Recipe for beliefs

Given our current political appetite, Jost next wanted to know whether liberals have different psychological traits than conservatives.

His “meta-analysis” of previous studies, including his own, showed that liberals seem to be drawn to chaos and novelty—for instance, they tend to support social change—whereas conservatives prefer reassurance and structure, and thus like to maintain the status quo.

Jost’s findings, detailed in American Psychologist, suggest that environmental factors, or the types of situations people encounter in their lives, determine approximately half of their political preferences.

For example, when people fear death or terrorism, or are in a state of uncertainty, they tend to become more conservative, he said. A study of World Trade Center survivors after 9/11 reported that 38 percent grew more conservative in the 18 months following the attacks, as compared with only 13 percent who became more liberal.

The other factor that determines a person’s political beliefs is biology. Research by John Hibbing, a University of Nebraska political scientist, showed that identical twins share more political beliefs than fraternal twins. They also, of course, share more genes.

“Forty, perhaps 50 percent of our political beliefs seem to have a basis in genetics,” said Hibbing, whose studies were included in Jost’s analysis. While genetics are unlikely to “hardwire” people into being liberal or conservative, Hibbing said that genes could make people more or less likely to have certain values or react to situations in a particular way.

This knowledge could pave the way to a more tolerant society, Hibbing said.

“If you think your opponents are not just being willfully bullheaded but rather have a kind of biological predisposition toward a set of beliefs, you might not spend as much time beating your head against the wall trying to get them to change,” he said.

I tend to think this is pretty much crap, and here is why....

There are only two options in his study.. being liberal or conservative. Therefore there is a 50/50 chance of being either. How about all of us who consider ourselves neither or both? The study is rather flawed because of all of the variables, and how is he determining who is liberal and who is conservative? Does this change over time?

Hmm...five offspring in my family.  2 are liberal, 2 are conservative, and I am neither, so I must be an orphan...

The article doesn't comment on how both the liberal and conservative parties have changed in the last century.  I wonder if genetics have changed along with them...

Interesting, Sanity.  How long do you figure we'll have to wait before the left simply aborts themselves into irrelevance and obscurity?

I see a couple of tangible points here. First, the study indicates that only 40-50% is genetically hardwired. I can buy that, as the 50-60% allows for environmental factors as also indicated by the study. For example, most folks in My area lean to conservative views on national defense and economics, and of, course, religion. Contrarily ,they lean more to the liberal side on social issues, like poverty elimination programs and such. That's where julia's "pretty much crap" theory comes in......it doesn't allow for a "gray area", only absolutes. As for the study "paving a way to a more tolerant society"......guess anything is theoretically possible, but about as likely as Sasquatch mowing your lawn.    Unfortunately

Interesting article....Much of it I do agree with......I have always thought that Republicans need to "fuck up" to run themselves out of office...Simply because libs don't feel the need to be reassured and don't particularily dig structure so have the tendency to no be able to play well with each other.

On the whole the study points out the obvious....Conservatives are conservative and liberals are, well, liberal......But when you look at the description in black and white.....I never was one to need to be reassured and I have never appreciated or responded well within a structured environment....I have never fit in with the "Nascar Nation."

Worth a mention I feel that the idea that people turn to conservatism/liberalism because of "situations people encounter" gives the masses way to much credit to be able to analyze the situation and then take that situation and transpose it into a political belief....The majority of the masses just want to be force fed their beliefs as fact and don't ever want to consider the implications of their beliefs and if they actually would bear fruit in real-life situations.

Good question, Rich. With their penchant for doing things like exposing everyones' throats to an enemy like al-Qaeda, you would think that they would already have received their collective Darwin Award.

Roe vs wade probably cut their numbers down significantly though, and it most likely gave us George W. Bush, but with immigration injecting fresh genes into the pool all the time - who knows?

We all know who is really having the abortions, those who come from backgrouds that preach premarital sex is so shameful that they do not plan for it nor the "accidents" that happen as a result... so the best option is to quietly go in and "have it taken care of".... the Leftist Liberal females are by and large lesbians and we have no children (at least that is what Pat Robertson said once on the 700 club)

Edited to add a reference for the Pat Robertson assertion that liberal females are all jealous lesbians seeking to stop reproduction completely because they can't have babies

I grew up in an Irish Catholic Democratic working family smack dab in the middle of "Kennedy country."
But I'm not a Democrat nor do I consider myself "liberal" in the sense that I'm in favor of "everything."
Fiscally, I'm conservative.
So, I don't know if this political preferance being genetic theory holds water.

But Liberals back in the 1960's were Conservative by todays' standards. Todays' new "Liberal" would almost feel at home in the old Soviet Politburo
