Australian pub bars heterosexuals  A gay pub in the city of Melbourne has won the right to ban heterosexuals - the first time such legislation has been passed in Australia.

The Victorian state civil and administrative tribunal ruled the Peel Hotel could ban patrons based on their sexual orientation.

The pub's management said the move would stop groups of heterosexual men and women abusing gay people.
Civil liberties groups have supported the decision.

This is daft......if there was gay bashing happening then existing laws against abusive behaviour ought to be sufficient.......unless the local plod wasn't too interested in enforcing them..

i cant bring the article up.

i know the gay bars in Chicago would have "members only" sign. this was  so  a straight person knew it was a gay crowd and if a pass was made they were in a members club.

i dont think heterosexuals should be banned- and to my knowledge that wasnt the intent.

some racy things go on in a gay bar- and i doubt too many heterosexual men would be interested in seeing such.

im not a bar person....

IMO- there is probaly a better way of designating the turf so as the folks who dont want to be around it- dont walk into it by accident.

I agree completely, phil. I intensely dislike homophobia, but I'm not a fan of heterophobia, either.

They cup each potential patron, show them a pic of Stacy Keibler, and if their package twitches, they can't come in.

Here's the remainder of the article, pahunk.

The tribunal's president said groups of straight women found homosexual men entertaining but that such attention was dehumanising, the BBC's Phil Mercer in Sydney says.

Managers complained raucous hen nights and stag parties created a poisonous atmosphere for its gay clientele, our correspondent says.

"If I can limit the number of heterosexuals entering the Peel, then that helps me keep the safe balance," the hotel's manager, Tom McFeely, told Australian radio, according to the Reuters news agency.

He said while Melbourne had 2,000 venues catering for heterosexuals, his was the only bar aimed exclusively at gay men.

Civil liberties groups said homosexuals should be allowed to relax in places without fear of bullying or intimidation.
Australia's equal opportunity laws prevent discrimination based on race, religion or sexuality.

dehumanizing?    no way! i love the attention of a woman.  iin the US theres a certain crowd of ladies that enjoy the gay bars- to my knowledge it is no dehumanizing to any Americans...it is rather a compliment.

if unteen guys had their head bashed in- ild say ok- strong measures.

personally - i appreciate the company of a lady.   some ladies like an envirment to dance- and no men coming on to them- even if they sasy "just to talk"- they have no fear of serious sex advances.

Hey Aussie ladies- You are welcome in Americas gay bars!!!

I think that rather than banning straight people they need
a good security patrol both inside and outside the bar.

I so love going out to the gay bars for that very reason!

One of the things I enjoy about the places I go dancing is that I can dance all night.  I dont have to dance with the same woman all the time.  I can act obtuse if she tries to hit on me, and the environment is not conducive to sexual advances.

wasn't there a Daily Mail headline that read 'Gay Sex at 16 To Be Law'?

Maybe that's where you got the idea that it was to be compulsory.........

According to this report, it's not only straight people that can be banned, but lesbians, as well.

SYDNEY (AFP) - An Australian hotel popular with gay men has won the right to refuse entry to heterosexuals and lesbians, officials and the owner said Monday.

That's bizarre, that they would allow banning people based on what most believe is a genetic disposition. If banning straight people is okay, why not ban gays, or ban blacks, or whites, or disabled people.

Seems obviously discriminatory to me.

Doesn't sound very "Equal Opportunity" to me.  I'm all for human rights...whether they be gay rights, poly rights, whatever, but to claim equal opportunity and then to permit discrimination sounds sucky to me.

I live here in another state but never heard that one i used to live in melboune, maybe i missed it on the news, but i agree i think if it has been brought in that only gay can go in there then what will be the next law as far as i am concerned all people should have to abide by the same laws no exceptions.
