Your body has a better chance to heal when you sleep. It does help you get better faster, but i dont know how significantly.
Drink lots of water too, and OJ.
I get lots of colds, i know all the tricks

Ditto what DV said. When you sleep and rest your body has a chance to heal and to creat more anti-bodies that it can't do very easily when you are awake and 'interfearing.' I have spent a decent amunt of time the last 5 or 6 years sleeping due to illness or after medical; procedures, my nurses ALWAYS stressed 'sleep as much as you can.' I listened to them, and I did feel better sooner than if I had pushed myself.

how are you interfering with your body if you're awake? I ususaly am very in active anyway, which I should change but isn't realative to this thread heehe, so what's the differnce laying in bed doing nothing but awake an maybe watching tv and in bed sound asleep?

At the slightest sign of sickness my brain just wants to sleep. It must work because I can't remember the last time I was sick more than 2 days. Granted I will sleep 12 hour stretches, get up for like 6 hours and sleep 12 hours more, then I'm fine. LOL.

I thought you were joking, guess not.

Its simple microbiology. When you sleep your body slows down, your heart rate slows, your blood pressure drops, your whole body relaxes, when its in that 'relaxes' state your anti-bodies can work a LOT easier than when you are active, just watching tv does nothing, your mind is still active and you are awake.

Case in point, a few years ago my son had a VERY bad virus, he was sleeping in 10 to 18 hours streatches, when he was awake he would play and be active, then he would just go 'out,' he had a fever of 103 off and on.  Once day 2 hit, I called his doctor, the advice they game me, 'Let him sleep. His body is fighting off the virus, the more he sleeps the better." By day 3 he was awake a bit more, and by day 5 he was almost back to normal, he slept as much as he wanted and soon, I had my healthy, rambunctious little boy back.

Same idea, when you sleep your body can go to work healing. Why do you think doctor's tell you to rest?? Its so your body can heal itsself. Fluids keep you hydrated so you don't get any worse.

Nope...not a myth hun. It actually helps a great deal. Gives your body a chance to relax and build anitbodies it needs to fight off colds and stuff. Don't forget to add in plenty of fliuds, juices, water, hot tadies can help...chicken soup is great for colds. Dunno why, just are.

If the same logic applies for a really unbearable cough (the really fun sort where you wake up choking...!!), I'd love to know - I'm sleeping about 14 hours a day to try and get rid of my cough, but I wonder if the main benefit is that, when I'm asleep, I'm not wearing my throat out talking!

With my nose being stuffed I do feel all dried out in the mouth,  I joked with James we can not let me get all dried out because then I over cook and I am tough and chewy and ruined by over cooking and drying out..

Sleep definitely helps. I often like to crank up the heat, wrap up in blankets, and sweat it out as I sleep. Cold medicine helps when one has a demanding job, but fever reducers should be avoided if one has a low grade fever. Low grade fevers are good.

DB I didn't want to take nyquill cause I do not have any symptoms like fever and body ache and chills, but Daddy said take it anyway because I DO have congestion and a sore throat, so far it seems to have helped some, I was able to breath easily enough to sleep,  and it knocks me out. The only down side is after sleeping several long long hours at a time I wake up woozy groggy and my head hurts some.

The main purpose of sleep has more to do with the brain. It is not known for certain, but it believed that during sleep the brain basically goes into a mode similar to what you have to do to your computer every once in a while. You have to back up files, defragment hard drives, and reorganize information like throwing out junk that isnt needed. The brain does the same thing. It reorganizes chemicals and processes memory. In fact some theorize this is why we dream at night. The brain activates memories while reorganizing them.

The body does take advantage of this rest however. The body is able to heal itself better and more efficiently when asleep. And you dont need much scientific proof to show this. If you have a back or a muscle ache, it will almost certainly be noticably better in the morning.
The body also assumes you will sleep 6-8 hours within a 24 hour period. So it will plan to do certain things duing that time. This is called the circadian rhythm. When you disrupt this rhythm through anything from working a graveyard shift, to jet lag, to skipping a night of sleep....you throw your body's biological clock out of balance. It will adjust, but for many people this adjustment lowers resistance and disrupts your energy level. This is why also you may feel sleepy if you over sleep. Yes, it is possible to get too much sleep. That also disrupts the cycle.

But when you are ill, your body uses a lot more resources and energy to fight that infection. So during that illness, you may need more sleep, and yes in that case it will help.

{leaves forum with michaelofgeorgia} OP isn't paying attention or acknowledging answers when given; you asked for answers, you have gotten them. Accept them or not.  Just don't argue.

Take a couple of benadryls (or any OTC diphenhydramine 25-50 mgs) along with that virgin toddie & you should nod off just fine.
