When I was a teenager all of us neighborhood kids used to hang out at one house and play basketball. That house had 3 kids living there...one took care of the lawn. He used to want to shoot you if you accidentally touched the lawn while running for the basketball. I can see it happening and much more than we hear about.

yeah- well- the neighborhood i grew up in- we were casual. man we had block parties- we sat out on the front porch. as kids we knew who teh bitchy ones were. i recall one lady telling me- i had poisened my skin as she had treated her lawn. of course the old lady on teh corner- BECAUSE she was a crab - it was fun to make her mad. incidently that chemlawn stuff is NOT good for pets.

We're having somewhat of a block party this weekend. They go all out for the 4th of July. I'm looking forward to it. We have no chemlawn here. Had to treat it ourselves. With animal safe stuff of course.

There was a lady across the street from the house I grew up in that would get SERIOUSLY pissed if someone walked on her lawn. She'd come off of her porch and chase folks away with a fly swatter. I thought she was going to have a coronary when My dog got out and laid a turd pile in her daffodils. [sm=biggrin.gif]Come to think about it, she was also the same woman that would spy on the neighbors with binoculars...

Roger, Around here reaching out means go outside and mow the yard, wash the car, etc. A gathering of neighbors will soon follow. I think its great. In a way it is a sense of family. They look out for one anohter. I'd throw a BBQ, everyone likes food.

Gloria, I take it you are adjusting to your new life in the midwest? For the most part- what u see is what you get. the folks are down home. glitter is nice but oh so phoney. there can be happiness in a rural area - which doesnt diminsh that another place can be happy. BTW- you see more on foot then when driving. we are desparately trying to keep the gangs out of here. we CAN WIN. but not if we are complacent. we seen how Williamsport was decimated. we dont want that here.

We have a gang in town. After living in LA they are a laughable bunch of punks. People tend to care more about their children here. They actually pay attention to them. For the most part I love it here. The food is better. The air. Things are green. The medical community is better than a huge city. Essentially everything you come across. It isn't mass where you get lost here. Does that make sense?

i find the same items you mention- here. it took alot to get me to leave Chicago....but it was one of the better decissions I made in life. next time u are in a metro notice people faces....city folk have stone faces= and fake smiles. where as country/town folk dont wear this mask. many metros money is everything- not so in small towns. i love to visit them- but my homes is small town America. people matter- there is a sense of "we are in this togehter"- instead of glittery facades. i like how errends are not an ordeal- less hastle. listen to this- i actually got a hug from my state reps office- welcoming me back to the county!!!!!

Errands for me are more of a hassle. Errands are usually things I don't like to do in the first place. Now there are very few places I can go without knowing someone around town. If you know someone they want to stop and talk for "hours" You no sooner walk away from them...and run into someone else you know. Its a vicious cycle. When I go into a big city to run errands..its at least an hour drive. Well worth it. I can get what I want. I'm already good at buying larger quantities so I don't have to drive so far all of the time. The mayor lives next door. He is easily one of our best friends on the block. So, yep I understand about the officials wanting you back.
