This is also good news to lower middle's and poor.

For years I have heard how expensive it is to east organically... This will surely help.

It's not good news for organic farmers, usually small operations with higher operating costs. Walmart loves to dictate to its suppliers and has the buying power to force producers to the bread line if they don't comply with Walmart's predatory practices.

Walmart affects whole, national economies and puts inordinate pressure on even healthy economies like here in North America. It destroys competition and strangles producers. That's way too much power for a private company to have.

It's not just about lower prices for the lower classes, especially when the poor are being created by the very company apparently serving their needs. Walmart's strategy is the dragon that eats its own tail. It is not sustainable.

Z.

Dell to sell PCs at Wal-Mart in retail push By Philipp Gollner and Jim Finkle
Thu May 24, 7:00 PM ET

Dell Inc. (Nasdaq:DELL - news) said on Thursday it plans to start selling personal computers through Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT - news) in North America next month, breaking from a 23-year model of direct sales as it tries to rekindle business.

Dell, which called the move a "first step" into the retail market, will start selling the computers bundled with accessories for under $700 starting June 10. Shares of Dell slipped along with computer component makers amid investor concern the low-priced PCs may squeeze profit margins.

Dell computers will be available in about 3,500 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, a spokesman said.

Dell and Wal-Mart declined to provide details on how the packages will be equipped.

The world's largest retailer will sell two models of Dell's Dimension multimedia desktop computer, which are now available directly from the computer maker.

"They (Dell) need to go retail and they are finally doing it," said Shaw Wu, an analyst with American Technology Research who has a "neutral" rating on Dell shares and does not own any.

Dell is expanding in retail stores to compete better with Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ - news), which has overtaken Dell as the world's No. 1 PC maker, partly through a strategy of selling in the United States through major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Circuit City Stores Inc. (NYSE:CC - news) and Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE:BBY - news)

Dell shares closed down 37 cents, or 1.4 percent, at $25.89 after earlier gaining as much as 1.7 percent. U.S. stocks fell amid concern the U.S. Federal Reserve may not cut interest rates this year.

The combination of Wal-Mart, famous for low prices, and Dell's Dimension desktops, the company's lowest-priced consumer models, may deter some upscale buyers, said J.P. Gownder, an industry analyst at market researcher Forrester Research Inc.

"This is a first foray into the world of retail" for Dell, Gownder said. "It's not a bad move. But in the long run, they'll want to establish a more-sophisticated retail strategy."

BREAKING TRADITION

Since its founding in 1984, Dell has sold computers directly to customers through the mail, phone orders or the Internet. It has also sold some models in limited quantities through retailers including Costco Wholesale Corp. (Nasdaq:COST - news) and it showcases products in stores and mall kiosks where customers can order them for later home delivery.

Company founder Michael Dell, who retook the CEO job in January after sales growth slumped under predecessor Kevin Rollins, last month signaled that a retail push was in the works when he told employees in a memo that the direct-sales model was "not a religion."

"In the coming quarters, there will be additional activity in support of this move into global retail," said Dell spokesman Bob Pearson, declining to give further details. "Today's announcement with Wal-Mart represents our first step. Stay tuned."

Dell's retail expansion comes after Taiwan's Acer Inc. (2353.TW), the world's third-largest PC maker, began selling PCs at Best Buy, Circuit City and Wal-Mart.

China's Lenovo Group Ltd. (0992.HK) also said last month it planned a new consumer business unit as it faces stiff competition from HP, Dell and Acer.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien said adding Dell computers is "part of a number of additions and enhancements that Wal-Mart is making in its electronics area." Wal-Mart plans to improve its brand selection in electronics, she added.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer has no "definitive strategy" at this time to sell Dell computers outside the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, O'Brien said.

Dell's Pearson said the company plans to add additional retailers in its top 10 to 15 markets, including Britain, Germany, France, Japan, China, Brazil and Japan.

PRICE CONCERNS

Dell's alliance with Wal-Mart may put pressure on computer- component makers to cut prices because both companies are known for extracting the lowest prices from suppliers, squeezing profit margins, analysts said.

Dell itself, which historically boasted some of the highest profit margins in an industry known for thin profits, will lose some of that advantage by embracing retailers, analysts said.

Shares of semiconductor makers fell sharply following news that the Dell systems would be priced below $700, less than Dell laptop computers and high-end systems that range from around $1,000 to more than $6,000 when fully configured.

"Wal-Mart is known for its very tight supply chain, and Dell is also very good at that," said Wu of American Technology Research.
At Dell, "margins are going to be tough," he added.

So?

Chevrolet is going to sell a Chinese manufactured car in 20010....

WalMart doesn't produce anything...Dell is simply a supplier....what's the big fucking deal?  Why does it even merit a post regards same?

lol Ross how do you really feel?  Isn't it basically the same in any industry though?  Larger companies compete on price until they overtake the market and can dictate it.

My views on walmart are elaborated upon if you do a search under my screen name and walmart. I am not going to reiterate them here. It is my opinion that walmart is the devil. It is not a personal attack as walmart is not a person.. thanks for playing.

Ok if you go out and just buy a computer from best buy, circuit city, or walmart and learn nothing about what you are buying you are probably going to get junk.  If I need a vechical I don't buy a pick-up truck just because they are giving great deals on them.

I own a dell laptop...and had it custom made from the manufacturer.  Its better than most $1000 systems and it cost half as much.  Yet I did my research, and looked past the hype.  I mean the only things that can use a dual core are the vista operating system, a few graphic design programs, and like what 3 games.  The rest all only need a single core, or can only be played on one.  Look past the hype...the only reason you need all that memory and space is because programmers are writing sloppy code these days.
The technology you see today is old.  Its not really new.  Its all about profit and money is all, and protecting those things.

julia that is a bs response.  You reply to a post noone is going to take the time to research your other responses.  You can't ever discuss an issue with an opinion.  When anyone ever corners you on something you come up with some bs response like the above.  Would you expect any other poster to reply to this thread and then say please research my other responses.  That isnt how a person discusses an issue.

Thank you for clarifying that you are unwilling or too lazy to research a person's position on an issue.

Sinergy that is crap for you to try and support your sub for being to lazy to define her beliefs rather than just make hateful statements.  You want to denigrate something fine.  Then explain how you feel.  Noone is going to research your beliefs.  Who the hell do you think you are?  What would you say if someone else gave you that response?  Go off and degrade them. You two are pitiful and you try to back something up that has basically no rationale.

Sinergy are you that desparate?

Why should anyone have to make the effort to?  You reply to something then you elaborate on why you feel the way you do.  For anyone to make a response and make someone to do research is lazy as hell and what they are that important that they can't explain their opinions in the current thread.

Face it  - you two think you can attack and say what you want with no basis for your opinons.  You two are always right and then can't stand alone have to attack others together.

Sinergy i feel very sorry for you and you have basically blown it.

disclaimer: i'm not wishing to add fuel to the fire.

that said, i do research people's posts when they say something i'm interested to find more about, and i also will go back and read threads they link back to (even when they are pages long and involve disgusting tongues and poor mutes--thanks for that one, happyperv). it's another way to learn and to find clarification.

edited to add that i especially find myself needing to do this lately as i was gone from this site for a long time, and i missed a great deal.

Since you asked

1)  Because it is important to fully understand what the person is posting.

2)  Because one appears to be a lazy nincompoop attacking a position the other person never presented.

3)  As Sun Tsu pointed out, one only goes in to combat when victory is assured beforehand.  i.e. forewarned is forearmed.

Let me know if you need more examples of why it is important to research an issue before attacking.
