Sanity -> Lecturer suspended after breastfeeding opinion (5/22/2007 11:04:35 AM)

Cairo's al-Azhar Islamic University on Monday suspended a lecturer who suggested that men and women work colleagues could use symbolic breastfeeding to get around a religious ban on being alone together. The lecturer, Ezzat Atiya, had drawn on Islamic traditions which forbid sexual relations between a man and a woman who has breastfed him to suggest that symbolic breastfeeding could be a way around strict segregation of males and females.
But after controversy in the Egyptian and Middle East media, university president Ahmed el-Tayeb suspended Atiya pending an urgent investigation into his opinions, the Egyptian state news agency MENA reported.

Atiya is the head of the department which deals with sayings of the Prophet Muhammad and the university is part of the al-Azhar institute, one of the most prestigious in Sunni Islam. Atiya's unusual opinion was widely publicized by Arabic-language satellite television channels and featured in a discussion in the Egyptian parliament. The Dubai-based channel Al Arabiya quoted him as saying that after five breastfeedings the man and woman could be alone together without violating Islamic law and the woman could remove her headscarf to reveal her hair.

But a committee from al-Azhar said his proposal contradicted the principles of Islam and of morality. Atiya had said he had drawn on medieval scholarship to justify his position. The opposition party newspaper al-Ahrar on Monday quoted him as saying he retracted his views because they were based on the opinions of a minority of scholars.

MY question was, how in the world would they ever get close enough to a naked teat in order to make that happen???? I mean, if they can't be seen together, if they can't be together alone, and so on - how would breastfeeding ever happen, symbolic or not. That whole article was just bizarre to me. The guy got that idea from studying medieval scholarship?

What a world, what a strange bunch of mental hoops those poor fucking people must have to jump through... and not all of them, I know. But enough of them. It has to be like Christians, but only Christians in the dark ages. "Here, my dear, wear these iron panties until I return... five years from now - IF I don't perish."

I think it would be a fair assessment to consider all of these sorts of fundamentalist in the same light.  Look at the recently departed Jerry Falwell.
How would the call for the assassination of Solomon Rushdie by the ayatollah Komami be dramatically different from the call by Pat Roberson for the assassination of  Hugo Chavez.

Ummmm...

Because Komani was the the political AND religious head of a nation state for starters and  he had complete dictorial powers over said state's resources.

Exactly, the Ayatollah is like the Pope, and the year is 1500. They (Muslim extremists) are not of this century... you could reason with Pat Robersons' followers, they're probably college educated, wear suits and work in an office. You could even cast a vote against Pat Robersons' candidate, and say so to his face. Not so with the Ayatollah and his followers, they're all, "ALLAH AKHBAR" with the swords and the beheadings and flying airplanes into skyscrapers with the blood and the guts and the stoning of their own innocent little girls.

A wise priest friend once made the interesting point that Islam is a comparatively young religion. Perhaps we're living through its troubled adolescence.

It's only 600 years younger than Christians. Compared to us Jews? Get back to me in 5000 years.

Sanity/FatDomDaddy:

Let me see if I understand you fellows...Two rich and powerful men call for the murder of another human being and one gets a pass because he is less rich and powerful than the other.  That seems to go counter to all of the personal responsibility rhetoric that I see you post.
That mindset  might be considered by some to be leftist in its concept.

It's obvious that you don't even remember asking your own question, do you. Those responses were in reply to what you had asked, and so for you to gain a better understanding of what we were trying to relate to you then you're going to have to re-read what you had asked us, and then try reading what we had written in response with your own earlier question in mind.

Sanity:
I asked what the difference was between two things and you seem to feel that the only difference is in how much money and power one has as opposed to the other.  This speaks directly to your position on personal responsibility.

I once herd that it was far better to keep ones mouth shut and let others think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
Good choice.
