The death of ACVR says a lot about the Republican strategy of raising voter fraud as a crisis in American elections. Presidential adviser Karl Rove and his allies, who have been ghostbusting illusory dead and fictional voters since the contested 2000 election, apparently mounted a two-pronged attack. One part of that attack, at the heart of the current Justice Department scandals, involved getting the DoJ and various U.S. attorneys in battleground states to vigorously prosecute cases of voter fraud. That prong has failed. After exhaustive effort, the Department of Justice discovered virtually no polling-place voter fraud, and its efforts to fire the U.S. attorneys in battleground states who did not push the voter-fraud line enough has backfired. Even if Attorney General Gonzales declines to resign his position, his reputation has been irreparably damaged.

It always fascinates me that people like Karl Rove and AnencephalyBoy and Delay and Lay all seem to go through life thinking the rest of us wont notice them egregiously breaking the law.

I see your point.

Republicans commit voter fraud.

Liberals object to it.

Therefore, in the World of Sanity, Liberals are bad.

No, actually, it's the cons (fitting abbreviation, no?) who've been carrying on about voter fraud. Several of the U.S. Attorneys dismissed were accused of not going after voter fraud vigorously enough.

Who ever thought they'd live to see the day when Libs (ever the dirty word, "Libs") would get upset that prosecuting attorneys were fired for not aggressively pursuing allegations of voter fraud... especially after hearing them scream "DIEBOLD!!!" from the rooftops for well over four years.

I think you're confusing vote-counting (in which Diebold's promise to deliver Ohio for George W. Bush did make some of of skeptical about how accurately votes were being tallied) with voter fraud (which is when someone who's not entitled to vote does so). The latter has been a huge bugaboo for the cons, and they got cranky when U.S. Attorneys declined to politicize the justice system even in the absence of evidence of prosecutable crimes.

You're not even making any sense now. You're trying to claim that if Diebold tried to steal the elections then that wouldn't be "voter fraud"???

You're mincing words now, and showing your utter desperation. Even worse, you try to claim that if the President wants what you call real voter fraud aggressively prosecuted then that's scandelous on his part...

That argument is just stupid

I was trying (apparently not successfully) to explain that "voter fraud," as used in the OP, refers to the Republicans' efforts to convince us that legions of ineligible people are voting when they shouldn't be. From what I've read, that contention is something of a myth.

Diebold's throwing an election one way or the other would, of course, be another form of voter fraud, but that's not what the OP was about.

As far as the U.S. Attorneys (Republicans appointed by GWB, let us not forget) are concerned, they did indeed investiage the cons' claims of massive voter fraud. They found no evidence of it and thus declined to waste taxpayer money initiating baseless proceedings. In other words, they put their duty as public officials above partisan demands--which, this being the Bush Administration, cost them their jobs.

HOLD IT A SECOND.

The vulnerabilities present in electronic voting machines is a wholly separate topic than the voter fraud being discussed here.

If this article is accurate, than the claim of "Not pursuing voter fraud cases" is PROVEN FALSE.

So, what do we do with an Attorney General who lies?

I guess you just don't pay very close attention, do you?

quote:

You testified last year before both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the House Judiciary Committee about this incident. On February 6, 2006, at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, you were asked whether Mr. Comey and others at the Justice Department had raised concerns about the NSA wiretapping program. You stated in response that the disagreement that occurred was not related to the wiretapping program confirmed by the President in December 2005, which was the topic of the hearing. …

We ask for your prompt response to the following question: In light of Mr. Comey’s testimony yesterday, do you stand by your 2006 Senate and House testimony, or do you wish to revise it?

Senate Fucking Letterhead good enough for you?

ATTORNEY GENERAL GONZALES: What I know is that there began a process of evaluating strong performers, not-as-strong performers, and weak performers. And so far as I knew my chief of staff was involved in the process of determining who were the weak performers. Where were the districts around the country where we could do better for the people in that district, and that's what I knew. But again, with respect to this whole process, like every CEO, I am ultimately accountable and responsible for what happens within the department. But that is in essence what I knew about the process; was not involved in seeing any memos, was not involved in any discussions about what was going on. That's basically what I knew as the Attorney General.

OOPS. HE SAW MEMOS, AND WAS **DOCUMENTED** TO BE IN THE MEETINGS!

Are those enough lies for you?
