Illegal immigrants toiled for governor
Guatemalans say firm hired them

December 1, 2006

SUCHITEPEQUEZ, Guatemala -- Outside his aqua-colored concrete house here, Rene Alvarez Rosales paused under an almond tree to answer questions about a subject with which he has surprising familiarity: Governor Mitt Romney's Belmont lawn.

For about eight years, Rosales said, he worked on and off landscaping the grounds at Romney's home, occasionally getting a "buenos dias" from Romney or a drink of water from his wife, Ann.

"She is very nice," said Rosales, 49.

About 6 miles away in Copado, a 37-year-old man who recently returned to Guatemala from the United States told a similar story, describing long days tending Romney's 2 1/2-acre grounds.

They wanted that house to look really nice," said the worker, who asked to remain anonymous. "It took a long time."

As Governor Mitt Romney explores a presidential bid, he has grown outspoken in his criticism of illegal immigration. But, for a decade, the governor has used a landscaping company that relies heavily on workers like these, illegal Guatemalan immigrants, to maintain the grounds surrounding his pink Colonial house on Marsh Street in Belmont.

....

In addition to maintaining the governor's property, they also tended to the lawn at the house owned by Romney's son, Taggart, less than a mile away on the same winding street.

Asked by a reporter yesterday about his use of Community Lawn Service with a Heart, Romney, who was hosting the Republican Governors Association conference in Miami, said, "Aw, geez," and walked away.

This shit's just ridiculous!

So, if you've had a contracter do your landscaping in the past that automatically makes you a bad guy now?

That's just like saying, if you've ever bought anything that was made in China then you can't say anything against free trade, isn't it?

Where the hell are you gonna find a "White Guys Lawn Service" at

If I wanted to make some money I wouldn't start a "White Guy's Lawn Service"  I'd start the "College Girls' Bikini Lawn Service!

I got a flyer the other day that advertised lawn service. The bottom said, "All English-Speaking Staff."

Par for the course from "Flip Flop" Romney:

In a November 2005 interview with the Globe, Romney described immigration proposals by McCain and others as "quite different" from amnesty, because they required illegal immigrants to register with the government, work for years, pay taxes, not take public benefits, and pay a fine before applying for citizenship.

"That's very different than amnesty, where you literally say, 'OK, everybody here gets to stay,' " Romney said in the interview. "It's saying you could work your way into becoming a legal resident of the country by working here without taking benefits and then applying and then paying a fine."

Romney did not specifically endorse McCain's bill, saying he had not yet formulated a full position on immigration. But he did speak approvingly of efforts by McCain and Bush to solve the nation's immigration crisis, calling them "reasonable proposals."

Romney also said in the interview that it was not "practical or economic for the country" to deport the estimated 12 million immigrants living in the US illegally. "These people contribute in many cases to our economy and to our society," he said. "In some cases, they do not. But that's a whole group we're going to have to determine how to deal with."

Interesting article in the recent issue of Rolling Stone.

Basically went over all of the Republican candidates and made the point that none of them will be capable of carrying the party.

This one and that one are flip floppers.

Those over there belong to the hard-core religious right and wont be acceptable to the rest of the party.

These over here have moral issues which make them unacceptable to the religious right.

Said the one most likely to carry the nomination if he steps up for it is that guy from Law And Order (Thompson?)

The most laughable thing was the comment that the most right-wing Candidate most acceptable to the Republicans is Hillary Clinton.

I was not aware that one needed to be white to be a citizen of this country...it appears that your bigotry is knee jerk in all respects.
No one has said you or anyone else is a bad guy for having a contractor mow your lawn.  What is being discussed is the perceived disingenuous of those who talk the talk but do not walk the walk.  IE:  Those who make the laws for us to follow which they themselves do not feel constrained to follow also.

They're probably right.  Republicans are very divided  and they want someone who won't make their brains overheat with tough issues.

Romney's not a serious candidate.  He's a flip flopper and hard core evangelicals won't turn out for a Mormon when push comes to shove.  This ain't no J. F. Kennedy.

McCain sold his soul to the Party leaders on Iraq and other issues.  The one quality that gave him broad based appeal (his independence) was traded for the support of the Party, and now the Party is abandoning him.

Giuliani?  He fails the first test required for an American President--an Anglo-Saxon name.  There are studies that prove that Americans will nearly always choose a man with an Anglo-Saxon name over an ethnic name for the Presidency.  He's basically a social liberal with a disaster of a personal life.

Shoot, I don't even think there's anyone else worth mentioning.

McCain would take office at 72, and appeared in the debates to be starting to lose his faculties.

That was the main point of the article; the Republicans have nobody they can agree on to run.

Hillary will be President this time out-it doesn't matter who the Republican is.

I disagree, her support of the Bush wandering around for 40 years in the desert will haunt her.

It always amuses me when people sacrifice their moral principles for personal fame and glory.

Well I hope so...she's not "about" anything, and neither is Obama.  Edwards is good, and Richardson is OK (he's basically an Eisenhower Republican...you know, from back when the Republican Party had a moderate wing?).

I dunno if I agree. Remember, it's all about who SEEMS PLAUSIBLE WHEN THE FIXED RESULTS ARE ANNOUNCED.

Clinton/Spitzer is *plausible enough*
