darcyinshadows -> RE: missing British girl (5/22/2007 3:12:10 AM)

The sad truth for the McCann's is that they did make a very stupid mistake, and one that infortunately they are going to have to live with for the rest of their lives. I do sincerely hope that Madeliene is returned to them safe and unharmed, but realistically the chances of this happening now that this ridiculously overblown media frenzy has kicked into overdrive are little more than zero. I find the whole coverage of this story leaves a nasty taste in the mouth for several reasons: 1. There are dozens of children who go missing on a daily basis in Britain and elsewhere, but it takes a blonde, fresh faced child from two "very successful doctors within our community" (their words, not mine) to make the world sit up and give a damn. You can bet your life that if it was an unemployed pair of alcoholics who had left their child alone to go to the pub then there wouldn't be the sympathy and concern, instead there would be finger pointing, recriminations, and the other children would be taken into care. 2. They've set up a 'fighting' fund, which to date is closing in on nearly £100k ($200k) of donations - for what, exactly? What is this money going to be used for, and who is accountable for the expenditure? 3. The whole 'Diana Syndrome' whereby thousands of people are latching onto the grief of this family by holding 'unauthorised' one minute silences (yesterday in Portugal), setting up websites, and holding vigils. 4. The McCanns intend to go on a 'world tour' to try and find Madeleine - again, how on earth is this going to help? Thanks to the huge media campaign, every man, woman, child and their dog are aware that Madeliene is misisng and that their parents want her back safely. I stress, I would like nothing more than for Madeleine to be returned safely, and for all of the other abducted children in the world to have the same happy ending, but the media firestorm has just left a nasty taste in my mouth. *books one way ticket to hell*
