Global warming debunked
By ANDREW SWALLOW - The Timaru Herald | Saturday, 19 May 2007

Climate change will be considered a joke in five years time, meteorologist Augie Auer told the annual meeting of Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers in Ashburton this week.
 
Man's contribution to the greenhouse gases was so small we couldn't change the climate if we tried, he maintained.
 
"We're all going to survive this. It's all going to be a joke in five years," he said.... (continued after the jump)

They are two entirely different branches of Atmospheric Physics.

Status: offline 		It doesn't get much more authoritative than theTimaru Herald, now does it?  I mean, the circulation of that paper is well nigh 14,500!

Augie's a smart cookie though.  He turned a dead end career at a podunk nowhere university into a position as the former Chief Meteorologist for NZ's Met Service.  Well, until he got fired.  And then he went to work for a TV station as a weatherman.  Well, until he got fired.  And now he works as a paid lecturer.  Well, at least he's found himself a job he can't get fired from!

Status: offline 		About a month ago there was a thread in here that said scientists discovered that the planet Mars was also heating up and at the *same rate* as the Earth!
You don't need to be a scientist to know what that means!

Status: offline 		There is still a debate on what causes Global Warming.  Astronomer still report that our sun is getting hotter.  Also there is a question on alternative fuels.  Brazil for one, this country has been praised for changing it need for oil.  The cars are converted to alcohol that burns cleaner.  However, they use wood alcohol, where do they get that from, the cutting of the trees in the Brazilian Rain Forest, where Earth gets a large amount  of its'  Oxygen.

Status: offline 		Just about every scientist in the field are convinced within reasonable doubt that man is contributing dangerously to climate change but the moment one person with a beetle in a matchbox says it is poppy-cock, non-believers attach their entire futures and that of their children and grandchildren to his very words. Believing such people is wishful thinking and just reinforces ones selfish motives about not wanting to have to modify ones lifestyle.

Status: offline 		The general ignorance in regards to Global Warming is actually palpable. I can't believe there are so many people who are taken seriously on a subject about which they have no clue. Just because some dude in a white smock says it.. why it's got to be true! "Scientists" have become the new secular priests....

Anyhoo, the only real contribution I will make to this topic is to correct Nosathro and point out that Brazil does not use "wood alcohol", but uses ethanol, which is derived from sugar cane, and is the same you drink in your after-dinner wine. The sugar cane is planted in low-yeild grasslands, and is not grown in the "rainforest".

Brazil is sugar cane, the US it's corn...

Does anyone else think its a bad idea to use food crops for fuel?

Status: offline 		Yeah, this climate warming thing is a huge joke.  As big a joke as "controlled demolition" and what have you.  More conspiracy theories brought to you by your friendly neighborhood aliens....  Come on..  Did you not wonder what those crop circles REALLY meant?

Anyways, the world is on a 10,000 year climate cycle, with 100 year mini-cycles, brought on by changes in heat coming from the sun.  In another few years it will cool down again and all these dummies at www.conspiraciesRus.com will be eating crow with a sheepish grin on their face...   And while I think of it, where the bloody hell is the evidence for THERMITE?  Would somebody PLEASE think of the evidence!!!

Buy a shore line home no more than 1 meter above sea level. Do not move no matter how high the sea level gets. If you're right your descendents will inherit valuable sea shore land. If you're wrong the rest of us will not have to support you when the shit hits the fane.

I suggest you cast a wider net before getting excited about every scientist. There are many scientists who still have not had their questions answered from the beginning of this theory. The numbers have never added up. Then there is the problem of the fixes being so pathetic they couldn't change the situation if it was real and verified. If someone asks for a bandaid because their leg has been amputated, you have to doubt their knowledge of the situation or the seriousness of their injury as a bandaid would do nothing.
Interestingly the least supoport comes from the geological community, the ones with the longest focus and timeframe for their studies.

Yes, and scientist has been reduced to any clown with a basic science degree who wants to be in the media. And a global industry was born.

When you cut down the rainforest growth, you get low (very low) yeild grasslands. Whether they use traditional grasslands or not, that is one way to get grasslands when you live next to a rainforest.

Well you build up the hype a bit more so prices actually drop and you've got a deal. The ones with those homes don't appear to be in any rush to sell, prices still go up.

But while we are talking about people putting their money where their mouth is, why don't the supporters of global warming offer ideas and solutions which will actualy accomplish something? Offering bandaids for what you believe is an amputation does nothing except highlight the lack of knowledge and thought involved.

Not to pick on you popeye...But if I recall the same article stated that the reasons for Mars warming up was due to an entirely different process than that which is affecting the Earth....So there is no correlation between the two.

I am all too often baffled about the folks out here who will post anything that they feel gives their position some credibility....Yet don't even to bother to understand the source or the reliability of this information.

The majority of the experts feel that there is a correlation between rising temps and the actions of humans on this planet.   You may not want to believe it....I personally think that "nonbelievers" just hate who the messenger is (Gore) and that they are so closed minded politically that they are simply not willing or capable to even begin to understand the possibility that there might be something factual to the idea.

Edited to add...The reality is that if the climate is changing....Even though we are the leading "polluter" it is a fact that with the rising economies of third world countries, China..etc...I'm not sure what all can be done to correct the situation.

The cycle of the sun and every other reason for the changing climate has been factored in and still there is a discrepency that no one can explain apart from human activity. No sceptics seem to have an explanation for the discrepency, until they do, they really have no firm ground to stand on.

Status: offline 		There is sufficient evidence to at least cast doubt on the non-belief stance.  What harm is there is taking precautions that could benefit our planet one way or another?  I don't understand the resistance.

I find it kind of scary that so much of the population will fight tooth and nail "proving" that God exists, though there is no proof whatsoever....  yet, can find global warming to be make believe.   I guess such mentality explains why global warming is a problem to begin with. 

In the end, we can just find a guy to make another great, big boat.

Feel that there is a correlation? Are you claiming these "experts" are scientists? Because feel has as much to do with science as believe, absolutely nothing. Provable facts are the realm of science. I can feel there is a correlation between the seperation of people and technological understanding, and global warming.
No one is required to believe human influenced gloabl warming, it is either provable or not. So far it is unproven and the flaws which stop it from being proven appear to be fatal flaws, they cannot be overcome with anything but faith.

I would have thought that would concern believers of human influenced gloabal warming? If I was trying to get people to support human influenced global warming I would do whatever it takes to get Gore out of the picture, along with the braid dead entertainers. The support of idiots is rarely helpful, unless you just want to play piper to a bigger crowd of idiots.

Politically? How late are you? For decades the numbers have not added up, since the theory was first conceived. All through the 70's and 80's people admitted to using the false science of global warming to acheive other ends, satisfied the means were justified. It has snowballed to dangerous levels. And like Sagan, I see this seperation of the populous from knowledge as a possible precursor to a dark age.
