I'm not a trekkie, but I know there's a number of you here, so I thought I'd post this:

Release Date: December 25th, 2008 (wide)

Release Date Notes: (12/15/06) Although this movie was officially announced earlier this year for 2008, there have been some rumors that it may be bounced back a year to 2009. (3/1/08) Previously mentioned as a possibly summer, 2008 release, Paramount has officially announced a release date of Christmas Day, 2008.

(3/1/07) IGN FilmForce recently received a scoop on the word of who might be in top contention to play the top three roles. First up is Matt Damon, who as you can see above has long been rumored. He is now reportedly indeed in talks for the legendary role of James T. Kirk. That leaves the biggest question mark for a long time, Mr. Spock, who may be played by Adrien Brody, Oscar winner for The Pianist. Finally, there's Dr. Bones McCoy, who may be played by Oscar nominee (for 'Forrest Gump') Gary Sinise. Other actors that may be in talks to reprise familiar roles in this prequel are Daniel Dae Kim ('Lost') as Sulu, and James McAvoy, who played Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia, as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott. (4/19/07) IGN Movies reported a few weeks back that James McAvoy has shot down the rumor that he is consideration to play Scotty.

Damon's buddy, Ben Affleck, has also been bandied about as possibly playing Spock.

I wonder if it'll ever leave pre-production. Seems like a dumb idea until people forget how fucked-up the franchise is.

Damon as Kirk???

If the choice were between the two, I think Affleck would make a better Kirk than Damon.

Really doesn't matter in the end. Shatner made Kirk & I don't think anyone is going to fill those go-go boots.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
*twitch twitch*
Why cant you just let..it ... go!

Seriously, I dont know that anyone else CAN be Kirk or Spock.  Shatner and Nimoy were integral to the characters. The personalities are as much the character as the costumes and the lines. Damon would have to be able to speak like Shatner did to give the character the right charm. I dont know if they cna pull it off, but I do have a morbid curiosuty to go see it now.

......

I'd say something about gouging my eyes out at this point but....

... Voyager, Enterprise... <sigh>

Paramount execs seem to be determined to squeeze the franchize for all the blood, err.. money they can get out of it, no matter how much they mangle it beyond all recognition.

I refuse to acknowlege anything past DS9.

$0.02,

Dauric.

Jeri Ryan could have you disappeared and pay for it out of the change in her sofa.

Show a little respect.

I'll show her a little wink-wink nudge-nudge she ever gets close enough to me.

I hope they write acting classes into his contract.

On the other hand, if anybody can play an emotionless, unbelievable, wooden, disaffected character, he is certainly in the top five most qualified actors working.

Ray Liotta would make a good Kirk. I don't believe any of those actors would actually do Star Trek though. They'll have to find unknowns.

Isn't this suppose to be about events before the original Star Trek series' timeline?

Matt Damon is OLDER than William Shatner was when he played Kirk.

I dunno...

Ewen McGregor was spot on with the Alec Guinesesque Obi-wan Kanobe. His preformance was about the only good thing in the last three Star Wars movies,
