I was approached by a women while lives in Africa.  I'll call her pochonlady for this message since that is a user who doesn't exist (and to protect all, including the guilty) -- Africa -- Red Flag #1..  But I'm a trusting sole.

After talking, for several days, pochonlady, sends me some full length photos of her, standing against a wall, that she said was taken in her home land, yet I notice the electric outlet is very American.  Red Flag #2..  This is the same message that she requests funds to get her passport for a visit.

Made a deal with her.  I'll pay for the passport (as I said I would help her relocate), once she sends me a copy of it.

A day later, she sends me a passport scan with the printed name blurred out and the name she gave me blended in, a nice crisp picture that looks like the same one she sent originally, with the background removed.  At the same time, I'm getting an email from her travel agent (who is using Yahoo mail) that her Visa will cost $250 (or $750 if I want it expediated) to process, and that she will need $1000 as pocket cash so that the US will not think she is indigent on her arrival.  Further more, the airfaire for the trip will be another $1200.    Please send this $3000 to there office via money gram/western union to proceed with getting her travel arranged.

The moral, it's ok to trust, even when a bit concerned, but there is nothing wrong with hedging your bets.  I always think twice before sending money to somone I meet online, but now more then ever, I'm going to ask for ID and try to validate it, perhaps even a phone bill or some other type of proff that it's not a scam.

Sure, I'll help my future slave pay for the move, but not when using the travel agency she suggests (at about $3000), using a passport that from the scan alone was obviously faked.

Folks:  Be careful as there is always somone out there who wants to seperate you from your money.   The good news, I didn't loose a dime..

Folks:  Be careful as there is always a fool who is begging to be separated from his money.

i get a sizable number of email from Men in Africa.  Here are some tips:

1.  While the first email may or may not be worded properly, any real time communication leaves no doubt that the other chatter does not speak English as their 1st language.

2.  Generally in the first email or real time communication, a marriage proposal is forthcoming.

3.  The other person never says they are a resident of any African nation.  Invariably they are Americans, in Africa on business, generally engineering.  (Evidentially there's a terrific shortage of engineers in Africa.)

4.  The coup de grace; the other person is in distress/needs Y/your personal information/needs Y/you to accept a package/check, etc. for them and thus must have Y/your street address.

Who knows whether these people really reside in Africa?  For all i know, this is the activity of a bunch of hyper teenagers in Peoria.  However, under the above circumstances i recomend against sending money or personal information, and ending the contact asap.

Who cares whether they're from Africa or from under your bed? Sending anyone you don't know money or personal information is just silly.

I daresay I do have my 'connections' - various brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins of quite a few African leaders and also quite a few high ranking Generals and Government ministers in various West African countries.

I write back and I tell them that I can put their money into a high interest account, even as much as 9.2%, and if they care to send me their details and a significant amount for a deposit (say, $1 million) I will go to the time and trouble of opening for them such a bank account. It really isn't a problem for me to do such a favour for such friends.

However they never quite seem to get back to me.... I wonder why.

Hmm.  Funny you say that.  I have only been approached once off here by a supposed sub that was a fraud.  They sent a couple terse messages, the second through email with pictures, and then I researched them.  I ended up tracking the person down to being an ugly, 54 year old grandpa of a little girl in MA, a bass player in some noname band, that teaches music.  I presented all the data to "her", including "her" MySpace page, and told "her" to fuck off.

I got one on another site asking to email her Yahoo account, that she was interested.  A 22 year old from California supposedly.  Set off warning bells right away.  So, having to know if I was right I emailed "her".  Sure enough, the familiar scam letter about her dead, rich parents, etc.  lol.  That was good for a chuckle.

In the last week, though, I have been getting quite a few of them to my business email.  Usually in the form of "job offers", usually in the textile industry and all of them from the UK.  They are quite creative, I have to hand them that.  I love Microsoft Mail.  It filters them all to a junk folder where I can skim them over and delete them one after the other.

I adore that and am filing it away for later use...

Sadly there are tons of scammers out there in the guise of Doms/subs who are trying to make a fast dollar.  I'm the type that will give everything and then some to help a person in need especially since (in my humble opinion) problems that can be solved with money (at least temporarily) are often the least complex BUT I wouldn't just send random internet person money.  These days I am wary about most people I speak to from overseas who seem desperate to come for a visit but seem shocked at the idea of funding the little trip out of their own pocket :/

"Hi, i'm a widower speech therapist with a 10yr old daughter ...i saw your profile and picture today and you seem like a caring person ...i'm having problems with my daughter and can you help me?" - the last African guy to IM me on yahoo

he "claimed" to live in Kent, UK though he didn't know exactly where because he kept saying the southernmost region (huh?) ...his "daughter" was supposedly sick with cancer, discharged on Saturday and returning to school on Monday (wow, that's some recovery!) ...plus his job title kept changing from speech therapist to author to diamond dealer.  now here's the scam he wanted me to send $350 to help pay for his "daughter's" school fees - he currently resides on a very long list with the other blocked Africans.

Ok...unless I'm completely misreading this, but it seems as if you, the OP, are still thinking somewhere in that brain of yours that this is still legitimate.  Do you really need to do further investigating?

I had a similar one the other day, but of course for us Brits they always live in New York. He told me that he was in Africa because his daughter was sick and she needed an operation. The cost of the operation was $15,000 and he could only raise $10,000 of it. I knew he was going to ask for some money so I beat him to it and said that my business was in trouble and he was lucky to be able to raise that much money. I thought perhaps he could help me out and lend me the $10k to help my business in the short term. Funny but he dissappeared very quickly. Jeesh they are so mean some of these people. I even had an empty bank account ready for him to transfer the money to.

So anyone here want to take his place and help me out here???

i just received one from RUSSIA!! the richest oil dealer in Moscow via his personal assistant wanted me to be part of a business offer in which i "simply couldn't refuse" ...however i did since i had to put up most of the money.  another one i received was from a "barrister" in Ireland who was offering me a very lucrative position in his firm without a resume and interview since his other "personal assistant" just quit on him. now for the catch - to get this position, all i needed was a bank account.  LMAO

Best one I had so far was from someone claiming to be ultra orthodox Muslim who had tracked me down as a most suitable person to dispose of funds in a way in line with Islamic teachings....

Where does one start?

Dear Ibrahim

Your funds will come in very handy thanks. In accordance with strict Islamic teachings, I will use them to undergo SRS at the first opportunity and then to open a chain of bdsm clubs. Whatever is left over I shall donate to LGBT groups and maybe also move in to pork farming.

{giggles}

I get email like that on my private email account on aol or on myspace; very few on here since few people contact me on here anyways. I FWD them to aol or myspace and to the spam office in DC, they go after these loosers.

I still think one of my FAVORITE all time scams, came a few days after I joined, years ago, it was so stupid, the guy said he ran a training academy for slaves [in the Middle East, go fig] and that he wanted to train me, I would have to LEAVE my child for 6 months, no contact, nothing and after 6 months I would be the 'best' slave [any Master could ever ask for or desire], and in return for his 'generosity' I would do exactly what he wanted, service him and  his 'out of town' friends as well as work off my 'bill.' I just had to send him a copy of my passport, drivers license and $500 as a processing fee; and if he liked me enough, he might 'keep' me as his personal slave [and wife], forever.

Talk about red flags {rofl}, FYI to the scammers.. saying I cannot have ANY contact with my child, just head for the nearest bridge and take a BIG jump, or asking for a compy of ANY of my private docs, you have to be a moron.

That being said I HAVE been asked for a copy of my CDL [California Driver's Licence] a few times, I can look younger than I am, my response, meet me in a public place an I will show you my CDL, if they are still scared, then we have an issue.

My dream is to scam a scammer. The problem is that big companies are scammers too.

I got the letter from Nigeria, and while I didn't repond, if I did it would be to get their money. I have to open a bank account ? with what ? Send me a few thousand.

I also like to keep telemarketers on the line for as long as possible and not buy anything. We send junk mail back. Watch out doing this with credit card companies. I found out your number is coded into the bar code and you don't have to fill it out at all. So I got me a free gift of a pair of earrings for the shipping cost of $6.

So your bank, the electric co., the gas co., Lowe's, the cable co., your ISP, they are all scammers. You have to look at every bill every month to see if they are slipping in some unincurred charges.

These people in Nigeria with all the millions for you can't ride with the real experts, American businesses.

And let's not even go into the lottery too deep. All I can say is if you accept a bet that pays 1,000 to 1 with the odds of hitting at 10,000 to 1, P.T. Barnum had a word for that.

I remember an old scam that involved a bag of money. You get someone to go to the bank, I forgot how it works. But I remember this much, there is a point in the grift where the mark can actually take off with YOUR money. And that is exactly what I would do. Of course they watched the mark so this happened rarely if ever, even if they ran into someone with a brain. And grifters can get nasty like anyone else.

All scams boil down to one thing. They appeal to one's desire to get something for nothing. I have no such desire at this time so I am pretty much bulletproof, as probably most here are. People are damn lucky I don't take the low raod because if I setup a scam, it would be a totally new one. But I don't even think about it, but then if I got a chance to screw a big company, I just might. These people who take money from little old Ladies need to be crushed like a cockroach.

I don't really know who is worse to coexist with, scammers, or people stupid enough to fall for the scam. If the scam doesn't work they would stop right ? Or maybe they aren't so smart either.

Yup, we all, Swedes, Polacks, Irish, Jew, Italian, we all seem to have relatives we never knew about in bumfukt Nigeria somewhere, and they are all millionaires. And these good people just want you to get you just inheritance. If it weren't such a cryin shame I would laugh. In fact I just did.

I got two words : DON'T TAKE. It has been known for a long time that you can't scam a truly honest person. Or at least that it is very difficult. If you truly don't want something for nothing, you are not going to fall for a scam.

"If you do not take what you did not earn, you don't have to pay what you do not owe"

What they do not have is your signature authorizing the charges.

If they charge you, simply file a small claims court for $6, court costs, lost work, and unspecified damages.

When they send you a check for $6, do not cash it.  Write them a polite letter back stating the amount
of recompense for $6, court fees, and lost work.   They have been served.  They face a summary judgement
if they dont show up for their day in court.

Sinergy

p.s.  I send junk mail A to junk mail B and vice versa.

p.p.s.  I used to give telemarketer calls to my toddler to deal with.
