I never said it drives down the minimum wage. I said it drives down the wages of unskilled workers. And it does. Say a company has employees that make an average of $12 an hour and demand all these benefits. Then you got immigrants coming in willing to work for around minimum wage without any benefits....what is the company going to do? They will lay off all those workers and rehire those immigrants. I'VE SEEN IT HAPPEN WITH MY OWN EYES!!!
And Circuit City just did it recently. They fired all their high paid workers and replaced them with anyone willing to work for 7 bucks an hour. Which is why I will never, ever step another foot in that store again.

Its the same thing as outsourcing jobs. Dell just recently layed off 5,000 American workers and hired several thousand in India because it will save the company millions of dollars in labor costs. I can't tell you how many times I've called Dell support and I have NOT ONCE spoken to an American.

I've always grown up with the belief that the Democrats stand up for the common man...the American worker. I havn't seen the Dems do jack crap for the average American since they took over congress. And don't give me the excuse that Bush is blocking everything....the Dems havn't even TRIED! Instead they seem completely obsessed with Iraq, so much so that they are ignoring the rest of the country. Then they sit back and endorse Bush's trade agenda. This is why their approval rating is in the toilet along with the GOP's. They can't even get the minimum wage bill through the Senate without adding on pork and 111 amendments.
This Congress is becoming an even bigger joke than the last one... The Democrats have turned their back on the voters that put them in power in order to satisfy special interests and the lobbyists.

It is the unskilled worker who is making minimum wage not $12 an hour.  The LA Times is full of adds seeking skilled welders carpenters etc. in the $12  to $15 per hour range.
