There is no need for Congress or the President to try to re-invent the wheel. Today we'll see yet another attempt at a criminal amnesty program. I would wonder how and why such an unpopular President can get any support from such an unpopular Congress for an unpopular goal. I don't wonder because the reason is obvious.  Corporations, putting money in the campaigns on both sides of the aisle, meanwhile eroding the wages of US citizens, want it.

Look at the proposed solution offered to the European Union. How hard would it be to enforce a similar program in the US?

Fine and arrest the employers and the criminal invation of the US will stop.
quote:

BRUSSELS, Belgium: Employers who take on illegal workers could face tougher fines and other financial penalties under proposals unveiled by the European Union's top immigration official Wednesday.

Fines could include the costs of returning the illegal migrants to their home country and repaying outstanding wages, taxes and social security contributions, and "if appropriate, other administrative measures" could be applied, including loss of EU funding for companies working on public contracts, the proposal said.

Frattini's plan proposes that EU governments adopt standard EU-wide legal penalties against companies, farmers or even individuals who employ seasonal workers, nannies or cleaners illegally, without paying taxes or social security charges on their wages.

He said EU governments should apply both preventative measures — like regularly checking businesses to make sure the workers they hire are legally able to work in an EU country — and fines against those employers found to be exploiting illegal workers.

Frattini said at least 10 percent of national job sites and business should face inspections every year.

Mercnbeth, that would make too much sense wouldn't it?
I called both of my senators yesterday afternoon.

Meanwhile, here in the US...

quote:

UPDATE: Six conservative senators are demanding that Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R.-Ky.) negotiate a “full and open debate” on the immigration legislation.
Senate Democrats and Republicans are working feverishly with the White House to put the finishing touches on an immigration proposal that could be announced later today or tomorrow. The deal would give illegal aliens living in the United States amnesty, according to confidential sources. It would also allow illegal aliens to bring their parents, spouses and children into the United States.
Multiple sources on Capitol Hill with knowledge of the proposal said Sen. Teddy Kennedy (D.-Mass.) has been able to extract significant concessions from Republicans. The critical part of the deal is a lengthy section that spells out the provisions related to “Z” visas -- or what my sources described as the “Amnesty Title” of the bill. The “Z” visas would be broken down into three categories as follows:
Z-1 -- Illegal alien present and working in the United States up to January 1, 2007
Z-2 -- Parents and spouses of illegal aliens qualifying under the Z-1 category
Z-3 -- Children of illegal aliens qualifying under the Z-1 category

Good thing they raised minimum wage. If this passes more people will be getting paid at that level.

As from next year when applying for any job in the UK you will have to produce either your passport or birth certificate.  I note that a new ordinance in Farmers Branch a town just outside Dallas, requires landlords to verify that rental applicants are entitled to live in the U.S. however, civil rights groups are to take this to the Supreme Court.

My brother works in immigration - from what he says, the illegals dump all their documents as soon as they get here, so that it cant be proven as to who they are and where theyre from, and so it becomes impossible to deport them as there is no certainty as to where to deport them to.

To work here in the "white market", one needs a National Insurance number. When my Czech friend came over this time last year - an EU citizen, he worked here for six months. During that time, it took a month to get an interview to apply for one, and he had gone home again without it being issued. Similar problems with the system for my English transport manager, who had been living and working in Italy (EU) for fifteen years until 2005. He started work for me in January 2006, and only had his NI number and tax codes sorted out in September last year.

Meanwhile though, the office which issues these numbers etc, has thousands more applications for them, than there are people here, officially. We have far more NI numbers in use than there are people in the UK. This means that many illegals must have NI numbers and are therefore working here quite legally in that their illegal presence cannot be proven, even if detected. How they get hold of these registration numbers etc is through criminal activity - I wonder if they have to wait quite to long as EU citizens do?

We are told here, repeatedly, that due to our falling birth rate, we need many immigrants to live and work here to make up the tax revenues for pensions and services, as well as simply to keep the place running as we all age. If this is so, then how it makes sense not to take in those who come here, refugees or illegal immigrants, who have the skills we need, I do not understand. There have been at least two Iraqi doctors featured on the TV who cannot work here, when our health service is short of doctors. Obviously, its better for them to be receiving benefits than to be using the skills they have to contribute. The whole thing is daft, made even more daft by the significant numbers of the existing population who prefer not to work.
