Notary Public qualifications change from state to state, here in NY you just have to take the test and pass and pay your fee. I took a prep course, but you dont have to. However, as a Notary you CANNOT notorize anything that you are a party to, and actually I have seen issues come up in certain cases where even immediate family members being parties have been an issue, but that doesnt happen all the time, only where there is other issues causing issues to be raised. Please note, notarys dont have anything to do with the language of the document. Their ONLY job is to make sure you match your ID and that is your signature on the document. As to Powers of Attorney. There are several types and different levels of Power of Attorney. You dont HAVE to do a full Power of Attorney. You can do one for only specific things like real estate, banking, or even a single moment in time like selling 1 of your cars if you have more than one. Living Wills tell how you want yourself to be medically treated if you cannot communicate like life support, feeding tubes etc. Heath Care Proxy is similar to a power of attorney, but it is specificially medical decisions in the case that you are unable to communicate or make decisions Will and Testament take care of your assets after you have died
