During the last night of the trip, staff members convinced the 69 students that there was a gunman on the loose. They were told to lie on the floor or hide underneath tables and stay quiet. A teacher, disguised in a hooded sweat shirt, even pulled on locked door.

HIDING??? Sure, that's effective... Against the fucking bogeyman.

You know what? You arm yourselves and organize a posse to aprehend the alleged gunman.

That's why the 2nd Amenedment includes CHILDREN, so they aren't passive victims.

this is among the most hairbrained ideas of an experiment in learning.

"teaching" fear.  ??

pahunkboy -> RE: Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack on Kids (5/14/2007 11:00:11 AM)

children imitate adults.  how so totally wronggggggggggg

canupleaseme -> RE: Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack on Kids (5/14/2007 11:03:17 AM)

Thats awful!!!
I can't believe these people thought that was a good thing to do!  How irresponsible, some of those children could have lasting trauma from that.  God if someone went into a school and raped everyone would the teachers simulate that to teach them how to deal with it?  The world is an awful place and shit happens but you can't practise for every situation that could occur thats just stupid if you ask me.

velvetears -> RE: Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack on Kids (5/14/2007 11:07:22 AM)

It's absolutely disgusting and those teachers were thinking out of their waste orifice... i hope they get fired they don't deserve to take up space in a school.  What were they thinking!?!?!?!  Those parents need to get together and demand something be done, and not just a lame apology and an excuse of it being a poor idea.

pahunkboy -> RE: Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack on Kids (5/14/2007 11:10:46 AM)

what possible lesson can come of such??

i smell a lawsuit.

irregardless on the bush perspective of the war on terror- it does in fact exist- in the real world. a school is a place we entrust our kids to be.

i agree that a few kids can be profoundly effected.

when i served in Americore there were so many things we could or count NOT say in the school system. much of it was legalistic.  we did a presentation on peer pressure. well the lone person- we had the regular teacher pre-select. so as to not ruin a kid,
the one school district was really sad. we were aloowed to read student comments of the presentation.

That these 6th Graders aren't capable of seeing to their own safety and security?

of course they cant. but the teahers answer to the prinsiple- who answeres to the superintendent.  heads ought to roll.

im trying to picture if this would be any different if were a college level experiment. I dont think so.

that age is very important in shaping young minds.

farglebargle -> RE: Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack on Kids (5/14/2007 11:19:57 AM)

It's more important to remember your rifle or handgun when you go camping.

luckydog1 -> RE: Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack on Kids (5/14/2007 11:22:32 AM)

The school I went to did a similar thing back in the 80s as part of an elective( criminal Justice) for high school seniors.  The point was to teach us about how unreliable eye witness accounts are.  2 men burst into class with shot guns, hit the teacher in the face, blood (fake) went flying and they made us all put our  heads down, robbed the teacher and left.  Then we had to identify the perps.  It was astounding, over half the class said they were both black ( one was blond the other Latino).  It realy was a very good lesson in how poor eye witness accounts are, especially under stress.  It was pretty controversial though, and was not allowed to happen again.

merrysbrat -> RE: Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack on Kids (5/14/2007 11:24:48 AM)

Good thing that didn't happen at one of my old schools, somebody would have literally ended up shot and dead.

...

I remember the excercies for a nulear attack that we practiced in school, same one we used for earthquakes...

What were they smoking, and how much, to think that it was appropriate to have a "School Shooter" drill?

spankmepink11 -> RE: Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack on Kids (5/14/2007 12:07:12 PM)

The intentions may have been good, but their method was deplorable.   However, i once read of  instructors going into class rooms and teaching the students to empower themselves and fight back when faced with a gunman, by using anything they could , as barriers, or weapons..  ( they never once mentioned  butt fucking) .   It was very controversial a couple of years ago, not sure what became of it, but i think it may , unfortunately, be almost as important as fire drills and tornado drills.

Dauric -> RE: Teachers Stage Fake Gun Attack on Kids (5/14/2007 12:20:50 PM)

I agree their intentions were good certanly.

but... did someone just greenlight this thing without notifying... anyone?

I mean.. Imagine if you will the first fire escape drill. You have a meeting with everyone in the building, say this is what you do in the case of a fire and that there will be a "Drill" to make sure that they understand what to do in the case of a fire, let them get back to work, wait, then pull the fire alarm to start the drill.

-This- was let's scare the little fuckers out of their goddamn minds and see what happens.

$0.02,

Dauric.

And people wonder why student do fucked up shit to their teachers. I am sorry but each and everyone of them needs a kick in ass and a pink slip.

The point was to teach us about how unreliable eye witness accounts are.

People are unreliable witnesses in just about every circumstance... it doesn't even need to be a high pressure environment for people to fail these kinds of tests.

I watched something on television a while back where a person would ask a stranger on the street for directions. Then two guys carrying a large piece of plywood would walk between them. The person who had asked for the directions would duck out, leaving someone completely different in the same place. A good portion of the time the person just kept right on talking... giving the new person directions.

Later on an experiment was conducted in a gymnasium. People sat down to watch a game of basketball. Half were told to count the number of baskets made by the people wearing red shirts. Half were told to count the number of baskets made by the people in blue. Very few of them saw a man in an animal costume, dancing around right in front of them. Even when shown video footage, some still insisted that the video had to have been tampered with... because 'they certainly would have remembered seeing that [the costume clad dancer]'.

i remember those drills - we had to hide under the desk. Like that's going to help if someone drops an A bomb in your vicinity.  All it did was make kids apprehensive and put insecurity in their minds. Kids should grow up wth a feeling of safety - they will learn soon enough what the world is about - let them have and enjoy their childhood.
