Hello hunkboy,

I saw this in the news, such a disturbing situation!
What the HELL were they thinking?

Shit, try this at my old high school and there would be
people getting stabbed and shot!

The school I went to did a similar thing back in the 80s as part of an elective( criminal Justice) for high school seniors.  The point was to teach us about how unreliable eye witness accounts are.  2 men burst into class with shot guns, hit the teacher in the face, blood (fake) went flying and they made us all put our  heads down, robbed the teacher and left.  Then we had to identify the perps.  It was astounding, over half the class said they were both black ( one was blond the other Latino).  It realy was a very good lesson in how poor eye witness accounts are, especially under stress.  It was pretty controversial though, and was not allowed to happen again.

at least this makes some sort of sense.  in todays political climate- im not sure they would attempt the same thing.

high school minds at least are developed- to a point.

teachers to be certified-there are many parameters that must be followed. it is a law thing. i was surprised just how restrictive it is- [to the teacher]    in Americore we did a diversity thing. our instructions were we could not discuss sexual orientation. i made alot of fuss over this. the most we could do is refer the question to a school counseller- but at least I got that much out of the negotiation.  after we did our counttywide presentation others copied our format. it was quite an honor. BTW- even to film the presentations for our own training purposes- we had to have each parent sign a release. it really was quite a project. one fine achievement. :-) I still have the video here. i dont regret serving in americore- but it sure opened my eyes to the world of non-profits. yikes.

i would be interesting in hearing the teachers logic for such. if this was supposed to be a political statement- i highly disagree with the method. i had a few brushes of terrible thing happen in my life- the stress can be cumulative.  it can cause nighmares and put a person into a state where they cant function.

frankly most adults would not enjoy such an experiment.

it rather makes a mockery on the war on terror.  granted - there IS a war on terror- if there wasnt prior to 9-11- there is one now, [iraq]

hmmm- i wonder if this conjures up the school voucher and home schooling debate.

my old high school now has metal detectors,. we did not need them when i went there. sure there were fights...but nothing  fatal-

heres where hollywood too has dropped the ball. glorifying violence. between, hollywood, madison avenue, wall street- we live in one heck of a world...

umm- i think this was in poor taste

Ok... a drill... good idea. Actually convincing the kids that there was a gunman? Bad idea. The point of drills is to do a bunch so that you know it staged. Then when it really does happen, you go through all the steps but you remain calm because you don't think it's actually happening.

the article reads that the kids were told this was not a drill.

as a kid i remember fire drills and tornado drills.

the best pshychiatrists in the world havent figured out the human mind yet...on this mass killing thing. as a cashier- i was told not to argue or fight to just comply ....pretty standard.

during culonbine- it was hapenstance as to who died and who did not- take for instance the girl reading the bible shot point blank. after a sarcastic remark.

a drill would imply- ways to avoid loss of life- hence a fire drill- people get out fast. a tonrado drill- take cover. so- it trains ppl as to action to get into should such occur.  we do not have the knowledge yet- to have any type of terorism drill. or do we???  unless you want to count being "viligent".

Columbine? There was an example of the Cops sitting around sucking each other off, rather than taking the risk that goes along with the badge, and entering the building in a timely manner.

Just think. A few dead cops could have saved a few kids.

Isn't that what we pay them for?

especially since columbine. what punishment should these teachers recieve?  if you pulled a "drill" at a bank, even with a fake weapon- the law doesnt take kindly to that.

I did a class last week for a high school.

Some dude with a martial arts studio in class watched it, then went up to the teacher who set it up (not one of our graduates) and harangued her for letting us do our class because we did not know what we are doing.

She was sitting there verbally harangued (adrenalized) by this guy claiming we dont know what we were doing and he said "what if I did this" and put his hands around her neck.

She mentioned it to me later, I pointed out that what she felt when his hands went around her neck was adrenalin.  Her response is to freeze.  I mentioned that if he had decided to do that to a student, his testicles would need a few hours on ice and he may only have one eye that worked, or no teeth.

Maybe my opinion tonight is a bit jaundiced, I was beaten up by almost 60 high schoolers today and I am a bit tired.

To bring this back to the thread, the problem I have with this sort of thing is that it assumes that everybody in the room will have the same adrenal response.  They pull a fake gun on a kid whose parents gave them a gun to keep themselves safe, the teacher ends up with a 3rd eye.  They do this to a student in my defense against the armed assailant and they go to the hospital on a stretcher cluthing their groin and shattered face.

People's idiocy amazes me.  Do they honestly think that they can understand all outcomes to all situations?

Sinergy
